SECTION 04 WVA 01
Restoration of Brick Masonry
PART 1 GENERAL
1.01 REFERENCES
The publications referenced within this specification are referred to by the basic designation only.
1.02 SUBMITTALS
A. Government approval is required for submittals with a "G" designation; submittals not having a "G" designation are for information only. Submit the following in accordance with the “Statement of Work - SUBMITTAL REQUIREMENTS”:
1. SD-01 Preconstruction Submittals A. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
2. SD-03 Product Data
A. Mortar Mix, G
B. Mortar Color Sample, G
C. Replacement Bricks Example, G
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.01 MATERIALS
A. Mortar
1. Mortar shall be of similar characteristics of the existing mortar.
2. This includes strength, (Typically Type “K” for the historic masonry at the Arsenal), texture, hardness, and color.
B. Bricks
1. Replacement bricks shall be of similar vintage as the surrounding bricks in size, color, texture, material strength etc.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.01 Preparation
A. Contractor shall remove all broken and deteriorated bricks.
B. Contractor shall remove all loose or missing mortar; previous repointing that does not match original mortar, including caulking, grout, or Portland cement mortar; voids, powdery or crumbling mortar; or cracks that weaken the bond between units.
C. Contractor shall cut out joints to a depth of at least one inch or 2 ½ times the width of the mortar joint; whichever is greater, or until sound mortar is reached.
D. Contractor shall be cautious with powered equipment so that existing brick is not damaged.
E. The joint shall be rinsed and brushed clean of all residual mortar, sand and other debris.
F. Brick/stone shall not be damaged or marred in the process of cleaning. Cleaning shall be limited to the removal of ordinary dirt and contaminants when necessary prior to repointing or repair, and the removal of excess mortar and residue from the masonry restoration work.
1. Contractor shall use the gentlest methods possible for cleaning masonry to achieve the desired results.
2. Cleaning shall proceed from top to bottom of the wall. If cleaning with water, the contractor shall temporarily caulk or otherwise protect open joints to prevent water from infiltrating into the interior of the structure from pressure spraying.
G. Contractor shall protect non-masonry materials and severely deteriorated masonry.
3.02 Repointing
A. Contractor shall provide and replace any missing, broken, or deteriorated bricks.
1. The configuration of the bricks shall be consistent with the existing and any new bricks shall be laid in the same pattern.
2. Bricks shall be laid level and square.
3. Bricks shall be moistened prior to installation.
B. Contractor shall replace mortar that was removed or is missing. New mortar shall match the finish, color, texture, and surface detail of the original surface.
C. Joint profile shall match profile of original mortar joints. If original joint profile is not present for matching, provide concave profile.
D. Mortar shall be “Type K” or appropriate for the structure.
E. Contractor shall also repoint cracks less than 3/8" wide in the brick/stone.
F. Repaired surfaces shall match adjacent existing surfaces in all respects.
G. Masonry repair shall proceed only after the cause of deterioration has been identified and corrected.
H. Masonry repair shall conform to the American Concrete Institute (ACI C-20).
I. Masonry repair shall proceed only after the area or surface to be repaired has been cleaned.
J. After the work is complete, the area shall be cleaned and all excess mortar removed.
3.03 Waterproofing
A. After the mortar has set, the contractor shall furnish and apply a water repellant coating to the brick.
B. The coating shall penetrate and not seal, it shall be specified for use in an exterior setting. The product shall be permeable and allow air flow.
C. The coating shall be silicone or siloxane based, with a 15% solids formula. The contractor shall apply coating according to all the manufacturer’s recommendations.
D. The product shall be similar to SealClear by Sealoflex Waterproofing Systems, or other approved equivalent.
