PART 3 EXECUTION

1. Demolition

A. All work shall be accomplished in a way that minimizes impact on vehicle and pedestrian movement. Whenever possible, the contractor shall work from the lawn side of the sidewalk to allow for traffic flow. If a lane closure is required, flaggers shall be in place to direct traffic. The contractor shall maintain an open roadway at all times.

B. Safe pedestrian paths shall be maintained during the course of the project. A safety perimeter shall also be maintained around the construction zone. Contractor is responsible for maintaining site barricades and work site security.

C. Existing sidewalks shall be removed. Curbs are to remain in place unless otherwise stated.

D. All debris shall be hauled off site and disposed of by the contractor.

2. Site Preparation A. Subgrade shall be formed by excavating to the required depth, and shaped to the proper cross section, and shall be thoroughly compacted by rolling or tamping before placing any concrete to 95 % compaction.

B. All soft and spongy places shall be removed and all depressions filled with suitable material which shall be thoroughly compacted in layers not exceeding six (6) inches in thickness.

C. The base course shall be leveled and compacted to prevent settlement of the new sidewalk.

D. The base course shall be constructed and brought to the appropriate grade for the top of the sidewalk to match the curb height once construction is finished.

E. Where any tree roots are encountered, they shall be removed to a depth of one foot for the full width of the walk.

F. The contractor shall maintain these site conditions until the concrete is placed.

3. Form Work

A. The contractor shall design and construct forms to ensure that the finished concrete will conform accurately to the indicated dimensions, lines and elevations.

B. Forms shall be made of wood or steel. Materials shall be of sufficient strength to resist springing during placement and consolidation of the concrete.

C. Wood forms shall be surfaced plank, straight and free from warp, twist, loose knots, splits or other defects.

D. Steel forms shall be channel-formed sections with a flat top surface and with welded braces at each end, and at not less than two intermediate points. The ends of steel forms shall be interlocking and self-aligning.

E. All forms shall be of a height equal to the full depth of the finished sidewalk.

F. After the forms are set, grade and alignment shall be checked. Forms shall have a transverse slope of ¼ inch per foot with the low side adjacent to the roadway.

4. New Sidewalk Placement

A. Concrete shall not be placed when the temperature drops below 40° F unless approval is given in writing. Provisions must be made to protect the concrete from freezing during the entire curing period.

B. Placement temperature of concrete shall not exceed 85° F (unless an approved retarder is used). Provisions shall be made to maintain the temperature below this specified level.

C. Concrete shall be protected against loss of moisture and rapid temperature change for at least 7 days after placement. Fresh concrete shall be protected from rain and flowing water until hard. All equipment required for protection must be on hand prior to placing the concrete.

D. Concrete shall be properly cured in accordance with ACI 308.1. Contractor shall use an appropriate curing method which satisfies the physical project conditions and exposure temperature. All concrete work shall be in accordance with the established procedures as set forth by ACI.

E. Sidewalk slabs shall have an area of not more than thirty-six (36) square feet, and the length of the slab shall be equal to the width providing, however, that where sidewalks are to be repaired, the size of the slab replaced shall be of the same dimensions as those remaining in the old walk.

F. The minimum thickness of the finished sidewalk shall be four (4) inches with the top elevation matching the curb height.

G. The concrete shall be reinforced with wire mesh in the bottom 2/3 of the depth.

A. Control joints shall be installed at five (5) foot intervals and expansion joints at ten (10) foot intervals. All joint material shall be fixed prior to concrete placement to prevent warping.

B. Additional expansion joints shall be installed where the sidewalk intersects existing concrete, buildings, or other fixed material.

H. Curb ramps shall be reinstalled at all existing locations.

I. Curb ramps and sidewalks shall be installed to meet ADA accessibility requirements to include cross slope requirements (less than two (2) percent) and slope on curb ramps (8.33%).

C. The sidewalk shall be placed continuously for the entire width of the slab, and finished to a true and even surface. The surface shall be light transverse broom finish and have slotted grooves at curb ramps to provide a slip-resistant surface.

D. All edges and joints shall be finished with an edger. Edges and transitions from curb ramp to sidewalk shall be clearly defined and contrast to the sidewalk.

J. Concrete forms shall remain in place for a minimum of twenty-four (24) hours after the concrete is placed. Forms shall be removed without damaging the concrete. Bars or heavy tools shall not be used against the concrete in removing the forms. Any concrete found defective after form removal shall be repaired by the contractor at no cost to the government.

K. At the end of the curing period, expansion joints shall be cleaned thoroughly and filled with cold applied joint sealant. Joint sealant shall be gray or stone in color. Sealing material shall not be spilled on exposed surfaces of the concrete.

5. Backfill and Cleanup

A. Topsoil shall be brought onsite to backfill around the sidewalk. All topsoil shall be screened and meet all New York State, ASTM, and AASHTO specifications.

B. Once backfilled, the contractor shall spread grass seed and water the area. Topsoil and seed shall be extended to cover all damaged landscaping during the process.

C. The contractor shall remove all other tools and equipment from the site.

D. Once complete, the sidewalk shall be swept clean.
