Historic Significance Categories:

Watervliet Arsenal was registered as a National Historic Landmark in 1966. The buildings were categorized into four categories (I-IV; I being the most significant) according to “historic significance”. Listed below are the four categories and the WVA buildings falling within them.

Category I: Historic properties of great importance which contribute significantly to the national cultural heritage or that of the installation and its environs, and which must be preserved.

Buildings:

1, 17, 24, 38, 110,119, 129

Category II: Historic Properties of great importance which contribute significantly to the cultural heritage or visual beauty and interest of the installation and its environs, which should be preserved.

2, 3, 4, 6, 10, 15, 22, 40, 41

Category III: Historic properties of value which contribute to the cultural heritage or visual beauty and interest of the installation and its environs, which should be preserved, if practicable.

Buildings:

8, 9, 19, 20, 21, 23, 25, 35, 36, 39(sludge drying beds), 43, 44, 46, 47, 48, 50, 108, 115, 121, 122, 123, 124, 125, 126, 128, 130, 135

Category IV: Any property that has been inventoried but does not qualify in one of the above categories at this time. These properties remain, however, in the inventory and in the historic preservation file in order to facilitate subsequent review and possible re-evaluation of their historic preservation.
