About this file
This is a coating (paint) specification sheet for the Research Vessel Medeia prepared by PPG/Ameron Protective & Marine Coatings, dated August 7, 2026. The specification covers surface preparation and protective coating systems for two distinct service environments: above-waterline atmospheric surfaces (hull topsides, superstructure, deckhouse, and weather decks) and below-waterline immersed surfaces (underwater hull). System A for above-waterline applications specifies a six-coat system comprising a Dimetcote 302 H inorganic zinc primer (2.0–4.0 mils), stripe/mist-tie coat and two intermediate coats of Amercoat 235 phenalkamine epoxy (4.0–6.0 mils each), and two finish coats of PSX 700 engineered siloxane (3.0–5.0 mils each), with a nominal total dry film thickness (DFT) of approximately 16–24 mils excluding the stripe coat. System B for below-waterline applications specifies a five-coat system using Amercoat 235 phenalkamine epoxy as both stripe and anticorrosive coats (4.0–6.0 mils each) and two coats of ABC 3 tin-free self-polishing antifouling (4.0–6.0 mils each), achieving a nominal DFT of 16–24 mils excluding the stripe coat.
Surface preparation requirements mandate solvent cleaning to SSPC-SP1 followed by abrasive blast preparation to SSPC-SP6/NACE No. 3 (commercial blast) minimum for above-waterline bare steel and SSPC-SP10/NACE No. 2 (near-white blast) for below-waterline immersed surfaces, with specified angular anchor profiles. All application and environmental conditions must comply with current PPG/Ameron Product Data Sheets, including substrate temperature requirements (minimum 5°F above dew point and rising), relative humidity below 85%, and specified recoat windows ranging from 1.5 hours minimum for Dimetcote 302 H to 4 hours minimum for Amercoat 235. Contrasting color schemes must be applied for intermediate and anticorrosive coats to verify full coverage, and DFT measurements must be verified per SSPC-PA 2 before each subsequent coat application with comprehensive documentation of ambient conditions, batch numbers, and application records maintained throughout the project.

1. Scope Covers surface preparation and coating build for the R/V Medeia across two service environments: (A) above-waterline atmospheric surfaces — hull topsides, superstructure/deckhouse, and weather decks; and (B) below-waterline immersed surfaces — the bottom / underwater hull. All preparation, mixing, thinning, application, and cure shall conform to the current PPG/Ameron Product Data Sheets (PDS), which govern in case of conflict with this summary.
Product identification note: “Ameron 302” is specified here as Dimetcote 302 H (Ameron/PPG reinforced inorganic-zinc primer) — PPG’s zinc-primer line. Confirm before issue if a different product was intended.
2. Surface Preparation Standards Governing rule: surface preparation follows the minimum requirements of the applicable Ameron PDS. Solvent-clean all surfaces to SSPC-SP1 (remove oil, grease, salts) before any mechanical prep. Remove weld spatter, round sharp edges, and grind smooth per SSPC-SP2/SP3 as needed.
| Condition |
| Standard (per Ameron PDS minimum) |
Bare mild steel above waterline (under Dimetcote 302 H) SSPC-SP6 / NACE No. 3 (Commercial Blast) minimum; angular anchor profile 1.5–3.0 mils (5.0 mils max). Near-white SSPC-SP10 recommended on new steel for best service life.
Bare mild steel below waterline (under Amercoat 235, immersion) SSPC-SP10 / NACE No. 2 (Near-White Blast); angular anchor profile 2.0–4.0 mils — required for immersion / tank-lining service per Amercoat 235 PDS.
Disturbed / damaged / previously-coated areas SP1 solvent-clean, then restore to the original prep standard by spot abrasive blast where feasible. Where blasting is not feasible, power-tool clean to bare metal to SSPC-SP11 (produces a surface profile). Feather / abrade the edges of surrounding sound coating and remove all dust and residue before recoating.
3. Application & Environmental Conditions
1. Substrate temperature at least 5°F (3°C) above the dew point and rising during application and cure.
1. Relative humidity below 85%; do not apply to damp or contaminated surfaces.
1. Observe each product’s minimum/maximum application and substrate temperatures per its PDS. Dimetcote 302 H (inorganic zinc) requires ambient moisture to cure fully before topcoating.
1. Verify DFT of each coat per SSPC-PA 2 before applying the next.
4. System A — Above-Waterline (Topsides, Superstructure, Decks)

Nominal system DFT: approx. 16–24 mils (excluding stripe coat).
Recoat windows (≈70–75°F): Dimetcote 302 H — min 1.5 h, max 3 months (power-wash before topcoating). Amercoat 235 — min 4 h, max 30 days over itself (abrade if exceeded). PSX 700 — min 3 h (20°C), max unlimited.
5. System B — Below-Waterline (Bottom / Underwater Hull) Do NOT use inorganic zinc (Dimetcote 302 H) below the waterline or under antifouling. Zinc-silicate primers are not recommended for continuous immersion beneath antifoulings. Use an epoxy anticorrosive barrier (Amercoat 235), which is an approved undercoat for ABC 3 antifouling.

6. General Notes
1. Colors: the two Amercoat 235 coats (and the two ABC 3 coats) shall be applied in contrasting/alternating colors so each coat’s coverage can be visually verified. Final PSX 700 finish colors per the vessel color schedule.
1. Decks & walking surfaces: where non-skid is required, incorporate an approved aggregate in the intermediate/finish coat or use a dedicated non-skid system — specify separately.
1. Mixing ratios, induction time, pot life, thinning, and cure/launch times shall follow the current PPG/Ameron PDS for each product.
1. DFT measured per SSPC-PA 2; keep application records (ambient conditions, DFT, batch numbers) for the coating log.
