Note: The treatment capacity of the TIDALWave( MSD expressed in number of persons per 24 hours depends on the type of toilet used with the system. Headhunter recommends using Royal Flush( heads with the TIDALWave( MSD for optimum treatment effectiveness. Royal Flush heads utilize 1 gallon of either fresh or salt water per flush.
Treatment Principles
The TIDALWave™ Type II MSD is a biological aerobic (bacteria and air) sewage treatment system. Liquid and solid wastes are removed from the water by bacteria naturally contained in sewage. The TIDALWave™ MSD consists of three treatment stages: aeration, clarification, and disinfection. In the aeration chamber (stage 1), the bacteria grow and multiply using the sewage as their food supply. This action reduces the quantity and size of the solid matter. In the clarification chamber (stage 2), the bacterial floc is separated from the treated water. The treated water is clear and free from solids, however, the liquid must be disinfected prior to discharge overboard to kill any disease‑causing bacteria. Disinfection is accomplished in the chlorination chamber (stage 3).
Flow through these three stages is caused by direct displacement. When new sewage flows into the aeration chamber, an equal volume flows into the clarification chamber. This volume, in turn, displaces an equal volume from the clarification chamber into the disinfection chamber, and overboard. No internal sewage pumps are necessary.
1.2.1 - Aeration
Sewage is aerated as soon as it enters the treatment system, and mixes with the aerated liquid already in the aeration chamber. Stainless steel non‑clog diffusers inject air near the bottom of the aeration chamber so that the sewage remains in a state of aerobic decomposition. This aerated liquid contains the bacterial sludge that reacts with the sewage to start the reduction process. The movement created by the injected air helps mix the sewage with the bacterial sludge and prevents sludge and sewage solids from settling on the bottom. The air discharged from the surface of the liquid in the aeration chamber is vented to the atmosphere through a vent line connection.
1.2.2 - Clarification
The liquid displaced from the aeration tank flows into the clarification chamber for further treatment. Some of the suspended material will settle out into the chamber below, where it will be returned to the aeration chamber. The remaining sludge and waste material is removed as the liquid flows upwards through the biological filter media. Bacteria grow on the surface of the media and produce a sticky, slimy film that traps small particles of waste. The trapped waste is then consumed by the bacteria on the surface of the filter media. By the time the liquid reaches the top of the biological filter, it has passed by several layers of bacteria, ensuring that the sludge and waste removal process is completed. Clear water accumulates here until it is displaced into the discharge line, and the disinfection chamber.
Removable sections of polypropylene grating are installed in the top and bottom of the clarification chamber to retain the media in the tank. This grating must be kept in place, or the media will wash out of the tank.
1.2.3 - Disinfection
The water flowing out the discharge line is passed through the chlorinator then into the contact chamber. The tablet feeder has no moving parts. It is constructed of UV stable polyethylene for durable and corrosion free service. Each system is provided with two removable PVC feed tubes used to hold the charge of disinfecting tablets. The notched weir at the end of the feeder ensures proper water velocity and flow through the feeder. The tablet feeder will operate automatically once the PVC feed tube(s) are charged (filled) with tablets, only one tube should be charged and the wastewater tested to determine if the residual disinfectant is at the allowable level for discharge regulated by your local authority. If additional disinfectant is required then the second feed tube should be charged and the wastewater retested for compliance.
1.2.4 - Discharge
The clear disinfected water is then discharged overboard through a discharge pump.
SECTION 2 - OPERATIONAL PROCEDURES
This section provides instructions for the installation, start-up, and shut-down of your TIDALWave™ MSD.
2.1 - Installation
The sewage treatment unit should be installed in a location that will be adequately ventilated and has space around and above the unit to allow for maintenance and inspection. The unit must be securely anchored to the deck. Installation anchor brackets are welded on the bottom edge of the tanks for this purpose (the system is provided with bimetal couples for attachment to steel decks. If the unit is to be installed in an explosive environment, Explosion-proof motors can be specified, if necessary.
Note: DO NOT WELD on the sewage treatment unit tanks. They are internally and externally coated for corrosion protection, and welding on them will destroy the protective coating. Weld only on the steel pads provided for attachment to the steel deck.
If the sewage treatment unit will be located where there is a possibility of freezing, it should be equipped with heaters. It should not be located where the internal temperature will remain above 120 degrees Fahrenheit for prolonged periods. At 90 degrees, the microbe metabolism is about maximum. Between 60 and 105 degrees, their activity is still very high.
The disinfectant tablets should be kept in a cool, dry storage area in the original container, cover should always be replaced after use and securely tightened.
2.1.1 - Plumbing
The following external piping connections must be made during installation of the sewage treatment unit.
· Sewage inlet connection on aeration tank. This connection is marked accordingly.
· The drain connections from the aeration tank and the disinfecting contact chamber. If the unit is installed below the waterline, these drains must be plumbed to a discharge sump or pump. Make sure drain valves are closed for startup and normal operation. Note: On some installations below the waterline, a discharge pump will be connected to the drain connection of the disinfecting contact chamber. On these installations, the cycle of the discharge pump will be controlled by a monitor (WTS-1500).
· The overboard discharge piping for treated liquid
· The discharge plumbing from the disinfecting contact chamber must be plumbed with a downhill slope approximately 1/8” per foot minimum.
2.1.2 - Electrical Wiring
The electrical installation should be made in accordance with recognized maritime standards, e.g. the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC), The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), or Lloyds Register.
Electrical connections should be made using marine terminals (e.g. ring or captive spades) or butt connectors. Soldered connections or screw-type wire nuts should not be used. Appropriate supply circuit overcurrent protection shall be used, in accordance with the cross-reference table provided on page 8.
IMPORTANT
All electrical leads must be labeled and mapped according to the wiring schematic below. Fill in the labels on this chart for safety and convenience in future servicing. Maintain the completed chart with the device.

2.1.3 - Vent Lines
The vent lines are an extremely important part of the installation. The TIDALWave( must be properly vented to ensure efficient operation. Vent line connections are provided on top of the aeration tank and disinfecting contact chamber. Keep the following points in mind during installation:
· The treatment unit should be cross-vented (to both port and starboard) to allow air to vent to either side of the vessel.
· Vent lines should be 2-inch diameter for models TW-50 and TW-200, and 3-inch diameter for models TW-500 and larger.
· Vent lines should exit the treatment system vertically if possible. This configuration will eliminate the possibility of a slug of liquid getting trapped in a horizontal vent during vessel roll or pitch.
· Vent through-hulls should be located no more than five feet above the treatment system. Vents may incorporate a high loop, but should not exit the hull too high. (in void space)
· Position your vent through-hulls with care. Although a properly-operating, well maintained TIDALWave( MSD will not generate foul odor, the higher the vent mast the better.
· Vent lines MUST remain free and clear for their entire length. Check valves or “filters” must not be used. Condensation will accumulate in vent line filters, causing blockage, and possible malfunction of your MSD.
2.1.4 - Air Supply
The sewage treatment unit must have a continuous air supply to operate effectively. It is recommended that the sewage treatment unit have a separate blower to provide the air required for normal operation, in addition to an optional connection to the ship’s service air supply. The air supply requirements will vary with the size of the sewage treatment unit. More air is required for larger size units, but the required supply pressure is 3-5 psig for all size units. The Sewage Treatment Unit Must Have A Continuous Air Supply When Operating.
2.2 - Startup Procedures
The Tidal Wave system has been fully tested and adjusted at the factory prior to shipping. The inside of treatment system should be inspected if exterior damage is obvious. After inspection, replace all access hatches securely. All filter grating must be in place, and all piping connections should be secured and correctly connected. Once inspected, proceed as follows:
· Fill the system with fresh clean water through the 1” fill connection or through 3” vent.
· Open filter filling air vent valve and leave open until water begins seeping out and all air has been vented.
· Continue filling unit until water begins flowing into disinfecting contact chamber.
· Line up the overboard discharge valves (Be sure all drain valves are closed).
· If an overboard discharge pumping system has been installed, continue to fill the unit until enough water accumulates in the chlorine contact chamber to energize the pump level control. This procedure will also serve to check the discharge pumping system.
· Verify the electrical supply is connected to the motor starter.
· Switch on the blower and verify blower rotation by observing cooling fan direction with rotation arrow on blower housing. If rotation is incorrect swap any 2 “L” leads (L1 /L2)
· Charge the PVC feed tube(s) with Disinfecting tablets and place back in tube.
· Wear rubber gloves and splash-proof goggles when handling disinfecting tablets.
· Follow the disinfectant handling guidelines given in Section 4.2, and read the MSDS sheet provided in Appendix I.
· The chlorine residual should be 0.8 to 2.0 mg/l after two days of operation. Adjustments may be made as required to maintain desired chlorine residual. If values to low add disinfectant to the second feed tube, and place in feeder. Remember, CL2 readings are subjective, it will vary depending on system demand. At peak flow rates Cl2 may be higher, at low flow rates Cl2 may be low. The best time to check Cl2 is 30 to 45 minutes after a peak flow period.
Your TIDALWave( MSD is now ready to process sewage!

2.3 - Shut Down Procedures
When leaving the vessel unattended for more than a month, the sewage treatment unit should be shut down. Ideally, the sewage treatment unit aeration tank and biological filter should be drained and flushed out with clean water. However, the unit may be secured and left full of clean water if desired, by following the procedures given below:
· Shut off toilets or bypass treatment system to prevent fresh inflow to the unit.
· Connect water hose to the 1 inch shutdown purge valve.
· Leave blower running and disinfectant in feeder tube(s).
· Crack open hose valve so that about 1 to 2 GPM of clean water will flow continuously through the unit.
· Continue the clean water purging and aeration of the unit for at least 4 to 8 hours. This procedure will oxidize, dissolve, and flush the biological sludge so that the system will not become septic.
SECTION 3 - MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES
The TIDALWave( MSD has been designed for minimal maintenance, and trouble-free operation. However, some simple maintenance should be performed to ensure that your TIDALWave( MSD is operating at optimum conditions.
3.1 - Regular User-Performed Service
Check the following items daily:
· The blower is operational.
· The disinfecting tablets are not bridging in the feeder tubes, preventing tablets from contacting the water.
· (OPTIONAL) There is adequate quantity of disinfectant is in the chlorine solution tank. The liquid level, visible through the tank walls, should be at least one inch above the outlet fitting.
· (OPTIONAL) Discharge pumps are functioning as required.
3.2 - Unit Drainage and Filter Flushing
Occasionally, the biological filter must be flushed out whenever a discharge sample no longer looks clean or has an unpleasant odor. The frequency of filter flushing will depend on the size of the unit and the properties of the sewage being treated. It is recommended that the unit be drained and flushed annually. Either the user, or a qualified service technician can perform this procedure. Be sure to wear protective clothing, including rubber gloves and splash-proof goggles, to minimize any exposure to wastes.
· Open primary tank drain valves, and either allow the tank to drain, or pump it out.
· After the tank has drained, remove the access hatches from the aeration chamber and the clarification (biological filter media) chamber.
· Use a hose to flush clean water over the top of the biological filter media. This is done by moving the hose around through hatch over the tops of the media pieces. Agitate the media so that as much loose sludge as possible can be washed off.
· With tank drained, remove aeration tank access hatch and flush out tank with clean water.
· It is not necessary to wash all the slime or sludge off the surface of the filter media.
· Repeat the flushing as often as necessary to clean out the biological filter.
· Close the drain valves.
· Using clean water, refill the tank. Allow flushing water to run and overflow into the chlorine contact tank, and continue to run until both the filter and chlorine contact chamber have been flushed clear.
· Shut off filling water supply and put unit back in service.
3.3 - General Preventive Maintenance
Never operate the sewage treatment unit without a continuous air supply.
Do not use toxic cleaning products that will poison the bacteria in the sewage treatment unit (Pineoil, Draino, bleach, disinfectants, etc.). Ordinary soap, detergents, and shampoo will not poison the bacteria in the sewage treatment unit.
3.3.1 - Treatment System Do's And Don’ts

Use of Sodium Hypo Chlorite
The only chemical needed for use in the TIDALWave( MSD is diluted household bleach. Bleach solution is fed slowly into the final stage of treatment in order to kill any remaining bacteria. Bleach can be caustic, so handle it with care. Consult the safety data provided. Use the procedures below for filling the disinfection system with bleach solution:
· Always use rubber gloves and splash-proof goggles when handling bleach.
· At the polyethylene chlorine solution tank, make sure the ½-inch NPT vent is not blocked, and open the 3-inch inspection cap.
· Fill the solution tank with a diluted bleach mixture. Use one gallon of bleach to each four gallons of fresh water. Take care not to cause excessive splashing.
· Keep bleach containers in a cool, dry location.
· Secure bleach containers fast to prevent them from dislodging or falling over.
· Refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet for household bleach provided in Appendix I of this manual.
