SWRMC Maintenance Assist Team (MAT)
Southwest Regional Maintenance Center (SWRMC) has established Maintenance Assist Teams (MATs) to work with Ship’s Force (S/F) to self-assess the material condition of critical systems and equipment, assist in the accomplishment of Planned Maintenance System (PMS) Maintenance Requirement Cards (MRCs), provide system operation training and understanding, assist in Current Ship’s Maintenance Plan (CSMP) job writing, and Technical Feed Back Reports (TFBRs).
Process:
1. A two-week MAT visits will be coordinated and scheduled by the Ship Superintendent, Ship’s Operation Officer, and MAT Coordinator during a time frame of two CMAVs prior to the actual event/mission (Pre-deployment, INSURV and CNO availability).
2. A MAT In-Brief will be conducted at a minimum of two weeks prior to the visit to allow MAT and S/F adequate time to prepare for MAT visit. During the In-Brief a tailored-to-ship Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) as well as a Power Point will be presented to specify MAT and ship responsibilities, the assist visit schedule, maintenance to be conducted, and all finding during the visit.
3. Upon commencing the event, the MAT will provide administrative and material assistance to include 3-M Maintenance Manual (43P1), CSMP, technical publications, and blue prints of associated equipment. MAT will assist S/F maintenance members in conducting preventative and corrective maintenance on selected systems and train S/F on how to identify problem areas and self-assessment of equipment and assist with minor repairs only within the scope of their abilities.
4. Upon completion of the MAT visit, a formal De-Brief will be conducted based on, but not limited to, an After Action Report (AAR). The AAR will contain ship’s personnel involved and trained, material condition of items assessed (as per MOA), discrepancies noted, corrective actions taken, any outstanding maintenance actions, and critique sheets to be distributed to departments assisted.
5. A Follow-Up shall be conducted upon ship’s request to help S/F continue to self-assess and follow through with outstanding action items.
- The following MATs have been established to assist ship's force personnel in conducting proper preventive and corrective maintenance on selected systems:

3) Only one antenna per AWR, even if the same type.
4) 957 will provide a truck to transport whips 15ft or longer. Ship’s force will schedule crane services for antenna removal and will deliver all smaller antennas.
5) A technician will come aboard as part of the job approval process for a “ship check”. During the ship check we will require a ship’s force point of contact. In order for this evolution to go smoothly, we ask that you assist us in the following ways:
Ship’s force provides the latest Megohm and VSWR test results to Code 957 (refer to PMS MIP 4411/009 MRC S-68 step 1 c. (3) a and b)
Ship’s force will schedule crane services for fanwire removal
Scheduled alterations (ShipAlts/MachAlt) to mounting points of fanwire antenna must be documented within the AWR.
Ship’s force will run an aloft chit and have harnesses ready with safety personnel standing by to assist.
Compare the approved jobs with the list of antennas you desire to have overhauled.
Do not remove the LWCA (fanwire) until we can make an accurate drawing for verification with the technical manual and/or SWRMC.
Ship’s force shall provide two personnel for PMS and training during fan wire overhaul.
6) Ship’s force (E-6 or above) is required to witness and sign the work package acknowledging a satisfactory in-shop operation test of the AS-3018 (OE-82) (Rotopool asset will be issued according to Production Completion Dates (PCD).
7) For Overhaul services 957 will take apart antennas in order to examine it and repair it if necessary.
Additional Information
For overhaul of the tilt-whip mechanism (For HF whip antennas), contact your combat systems port engineer. The tilt mechanism is not part of the antenna.
957 cannot overhaul the following antennas if physically damaged, or if they fail initial VSWR tests:
AS-3020/U, AS-3021/U, AS-2815/SRC, AS-4293/SRC, AS-2877/SRC, AS-390/SRC, AS-2809, AS-1735.
We are not able to tune or align the AS-2188/U or AS-2189/U Antennas.
Ground wires or bond straps are no longer manufactured by SWRMC.
Have tools ready and a container to retain mounting hardware. Do not bring any mounting hardware to code 957.
A senior petty officer (E-5 or above) shall accompany all of the small antennas. Someone accountable needs to verify and sign for what is delivered.
Time for Fan Wire Maintenance?
Annual LWCA (fan wire) maintenance can be performed at SWRMC in Bldg 3338, call 619-556-8015. SWRMC will train your sailors on how to perform this maintenance. This can be a real plus if you have problems while deployed. Taking advantage of this opportunity preserves the life of your fan wire and is significantly less expensive than a total replacement of your existing fan wire. Lastly, if fanwire is required to be replaced contact the shop before removing fanwire to allow time to do an assessment while in place.
