STANDARD PRECAUTIONS for Quaternary Ammonium: These products are corrosive to steel and may degrade rubber (esp.

where EDTA is part of the formula), especially in the concentrated form, so proper dilution is necessary. These statements are based on 1% maximum concentration as-used.

Acceptable for use in habitability and machinery spaces when this guidance is followed: Caution is required to avoid pooling and collection of liquid cleaner on all surfaces (e.g., decks, crevices, equipment).

WIPING: Acceptable in all spaces, with limited application in machinery spaces, namely hand-wiping of high-touch items (e.g.

switches, handwheels, operators, etc.) and readily accessible hard surfaces. Apply sparingly to the wiping towel and not allowing application media to be dripping wet. Dry off component with a freshwater sponge/papertowel. Minimize liquid contact with pushbutton switches and associated gaskets on interface control (IC) panels. SPRAYING/MISTING:

Acceptable in habitability spaces but do not allow to pool. Not acceptable in machinery spaces. FOGGING: Not Authorized.

STANDARD PRECAUTIONS for Alcohols: Flammable. Keep away from fire or flame. Note that higher concentrations (e.g., 91%) may cause haze or dulling of clear plastic parts and loss of gloss on some paints. In some cases, alcohols may soften interior coatings leading to a tacky surface, but coating delamination is not expected. Before cleaning any interior painted surface, rub a rag soaked in the solution vigorously over a small, inconspicuous area and if the paint color transfers to the rag, select another cleaning/disinfecting solution for use on that painted area.

Denatured, Ethyl and Isopropyl Alcohols are acceptable for use on metal and plastic surfaces in both habitability and engineering spaces, at all concentrations.

WIPING: Acceptable in all spaces. SPRAYING/MISTING:

Acceptable in all spaces provided risks associated with flammable vapors are addressed and solutions not allowed to pool. FOGGING: Not Authorized.

STANDARD PRECAUTIONS for Hydrogen Peroxides: Wiping is acceptable for use on hard surfaces in habitability and machinery spaces, acceptable for WIPING APPLICATION ONLY at 3% maximum concentration.

WIPING: Acceptable on limited items (e.g. control panel switches, handwheels and operators, etc.) provided wipes are not dripping wet, are used sparingly (only once per watchstander), and the component is wiped off w/ a freshwater sponge/paper towel after decontamination to maximum extent practicable. Do not use on bare metal piping, valves, machinery, etc. Minimize liquid contact with pushbutton switches and associated gaskets on Interface Control (IC) panels to reduce risk of intrusion to internal electrical connections.

SPRAYING/MISTING: Not acceptable due to strong corrosivity to many metals, including metals in electronic circuitry. FOGGING:

Not Authorized.

STANDARD PRECAUTIONS for Hypochlorite Solutions (Including Bleach): In concentrated form, these products are corrosive to aluminum, could crack stainless steel, strip some interior paints, and bleach fabrics. Proper dilution is necessary. Spilled powder or liquid concentrate must be collected immediately and the area rinsed thoroughly with potable water. Acceptable for use in habitability spaces by wiping or spraying when properly diluted to a maximum of 2.5% concentration. Wiping is acceptable on or around engineering equipment or electronics enclosures but spraying not acceptable due to the risk of chloride-induced Stress Corrosion Cracking in stainless steels (i.e. Corrosion Resistant Steels or CRES). Do not use on flat panel displays as damage may result.

WIPING: Acceptable in all spaces. Follow with a freshwater wipe if possible. SPRAYING/MISTING: Acceptable in habitability spaces but do not allow to pool. Not acceptable in machinery spaces. FOGGING: Not Authorized.

The following items do not have an NSN; however, they are approved for all surface ships as COVID-19 disinfectants and may be locally procured via government-issued purchasing card.

SPRAYING/MISTING: Acceptable in habitability spaces but do not allow to pool.

Not acceptable in machinery spaces. FOGGING: Not Authorized.

Updated NAVSEA Recommended Large Area Cleaning Products

NAVSEA recommended products are quaternary ammonium based disinfectant cleaners (NSN or purchase locally). These compounds are well known and are the active ingredients in household non‐ bleach wipes such as Clorox wipes. They are extremely effective at neutralizing enveloped viruses (SAR‐COV‐2 / COVID‐19 is an enveloped virus). The following preferred products are commonly used effective disinfecting agents which have no detrimental impacts to fabrics when used in recommended diluted concentrations per the manufacturer directions. Recommended cleaners include:

a. NSN 6840‐00‐201‐2505, MIKRO‐QUAT INC. ECOLAB, EPA‐N list item 1677‐21, quaternary ammonium ethanol blend, 1 gallon, cage code 85884. This product should be diluted at a ratio of 1 ounce per 1 gallon per manufacturer specifications.

b. NSN 6840‐01‐604‐6411, CAVICIDE, METREX RESEARCH, quaternary ammonium‐isopropanol blend. EPA‐N list item 46781‐6.

This product should be used as received; no dilution is recommended per manufacturer’s specification.

c. LYSOL BRAND I.C. quaternary ammonium deodorizing disinfectant cleaner, EPA‐N list item 675‐54; 24 ounce bottles, no NSN. This product should be diluted at a ratio of 1:256 (0.5 ounce concentrated solution diluted with 1 gallon of water) per manufacturer’s specification.

d. DECON 7 part 1. EPA‐N list 89833‐3; no NSN (note: part 1 consists of a blend of quaternary ammonium compounds and surfactants). This product should be diluted at a ratio of 1:1

(1 gallon of concentrated solution diluted with 1 gallon of water) per manufacturer’s specification.

e. MAQUAT 2420‐10 EPA‐N list 10324‐194. No NSN. This product should be diluted at a ratio of 1.5 ounce per 1 gallon of water per manufacturer’s specification.

f. NSN 7930‐01‐589‐0598, multi‐surface sanitizer (VIREX II

256), DIVERSEY, EPA‐N list item 70627‐24, quaternary ammonium ethanol blend, 6‐32oz, cage code 325G4. This product should be diluted at a ratio of 1:256 (1 ounce concentrated solution

Enclosure (1) diluted with 2 gallons of water) per manufacturer’s specification.

g. Oasis 146 MULTI‐QUAT sanitizer; NIIN 01‐589‐3786; this product should be diluted at a ratio of 2 ounces per gallon of water (this is lower than the manufacturer's recommendation).

* h. NSN 6840-01-398-0974 ECOLAB disinfectant cleaner 2.0.

This product should be diluted 2.0 ounces of the concentrated solution with 1 gallon of water (as recommended by the manufacturer).

Note (1): Ensure chemical dilution instructions are strictly followed to prevent safety hazards from strong solutions or ineffective disinfection from weak solutions.

Note (2): Other products containing quaternary ammonium may be used if approved via a SHML Feedback Report (SFR). Surface ships are to download the SFR spreadsheet template and utilize, as required, to post SFR smil feedback details in the electronic advisory record repository and tracking system (EARRTS) advisory tracking record (ATR), as applicable.

* Designates added disinfecting agent since release of Reference

(a).
