Technical Summary Operations

• BFTN system is a wireless gateway for platforms to reach each other in a COMSEC secure HF & UHF radio based multicast ad-hoc network Balances traffic over HF and/or UHF based on best-path/best-link margin configuration settings noted in the BFTN Specification

– Proxies Ethernet to serial transitions into the RF Network

– GFI software provided for Gateway Controllers, GUI and Firewall

• BFTN is fielded in multiple mission environments As of Industry day - 74 ships, 8 subs, 28 aircraft, 2 shore stations in the US Navy; 36 ships, 2 aircraft 2 shore stations in NATO partner nation navies have compatible systems

– Systems must be ad-hoc interoperable to assure mission operations between US-Only platforms and Allied/Coalition partner platforms

– Quality levels, settings and configuration defined in the BFTN

Specification assure interoperability

HF: High Frequency RF: Radio Frequency UHF: Ultra High Frequency NATO: North Atlantic Treaty Organization

Variant Differences

• AN/USQ-195(v)1 is the most commonly order system used in ship and shore platform environments

• AN/USQ-195(v)2 is a kitted BFTN system for dispersed installation in Submarine Radio Room racks (may or may not be ordered with Allied/Coalition capability shown)

Production

• In-process rack/system change initiatives include:

Improved load balancing and application protocol administration

(settings within the GFI software delivered upon award) Shift replacement hardware in rack

– Conversion of Gateway Controllers to common cPCI form factor to address memory management, GUI controls, obsolescence and attain reduced power and HVAC demands (shift hardware in rack)

– Obsolete Rockwell-Collins HF Modems replace Modems

• Production parts acquisition and Build-to-Print is key part of assuring interoperation and installation Parts supply can be from company procurement sources

– Contractor shall follow the BOM (also refer to SOW Section 3.4 and 5) ISO 9002* assembly best practices for build, assembly, connectorization, grounding and cable routing are required (Refer to SOW Section 5.3.2)

15 * International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9002: Model for quality assurance in production, installation and servicing

Ruggedization

• Ruggedization of many major and minor components within the BFTN systems assure certification to MIL-DTL- 901E Grade B.

• Refer to SOW and Specification for further details on ruggedization requirements.

Ruggedization Visual cPCI Components:

RTV108 adhesive stabilize front interface connectors

HF & UHF Modems: Tie wraps stop wire movement;

RTV108 at interface connectors

Ruggedization Visual

HSTB: Re-route wires stop wire wear; RTV108 surface mount components. To prevent EMI “noise” per MIL-STD-461E; we seal the chassis with EMI gaskets/tape and close unused rear connectors with metal covers.

Production Acceptance Testing

• Pre-installation “burn-In” test of some components is recommended upon warehouse receipt to reduce warranty risk HSTB pairing to a Garmin 19HXS GPS receiver antenna (15 minutes) SNR Modems operate prior to integration – test for full boot-up and visually assess satisfactory video quality to HMI (15 minutes)

• A BFTN system is provided as GFP

Cable Run Sheets (wiring drawings) are provided to build “back-to-back” test cables between the Production Unit and the GFP system

– Energize each rack and transmit RF Chat back and forth

– Visually verify video quality

– Verify keyboard/mouse responsiveness at each KVM position selection

• Cable run sheets are provided to build intra-system loopback cables for troubleshooting using a single rack 20

BFTN is an Integral Part of C4I

During a Command & Control in a Denied/Degraded Environment (C2D2E), the ADNS autonomously shifts IP transport to BFTN for continuous comms in the worst at-sea warfighting conditions - this rack must be ready
