1. QUESTION: Are plastic (e.g. polyethylene) fuel tanks allowed?
ANSWER: Gasoline fuel tanks must be aluminum as required in Specification Section 541-1. The aluminum alloy shall be 5086-H116/5086-H117 in accordance with Specification Section 078-1 and ABYC requirements (Specification Section 070-5). The small diesel fuel tank in Specification Section 511-2 does not require a specific material, and plastic may be used provided the tank is suitable for the marine environment in accordance with Specification Section 500-1 and suitable for installation on the exterior or the boat (e.g. marine grade, UV stabilized, etc.).
