About this file
This is a final design document for an incinerator combustion gas conditioning and control system prepared for the Embassy of the United States of America in Costa Rica. The document was prepared by INCINER8 Corporation (ATSG CARSI) in Guatemala, dated May 2026, for a Drug Incinerator Operations Advisor role.
The project involves designing a three-stage emission control system for a PENNRAM brand industrial incinerator (Model C 750, capacity 350 kg/h) that processes special waste including psychoactive substances. The system processes combustion gases at 4.3 m³/s and 218.84°C following thermal oxidation stages in primary and secondary chambers. Stage 3 implements a centrifugal scrubber for chemical neutralization of acidic gases (HCl, HF, SO₂, NOx) using alkaline solutions. Key equipment specifications include: centrifugal scrubber diameter of 1,424 mm, height of 5,694 mm, 12 spray nozzles with 22.35 mm diameter operating at 10 psi, water supply of 1.2 L/s (18.4 gal/min), and a mist eliminator with metal plates. Auxiliary equipment includes a water pump and a sedimentation/recirculation tank measuring 3.0 m (length) x 2.0 m (width) x 1.5 m (height) with 8.7 m³ capacity and 1.0-hour residence time. The design specifies material selections based on temperature zones: nickel-chromium alloys (Inconel 625 or Hastelloy C-276) for high-temperature shock zones and super austenitic stainless steel (AL-6XN or 254 SMO) for post-cooling sections. The scope includes sizing, recommendations, and construction/startup support but excludes manufacturing of control equipment. The document notes that INCINER8 LATINOAMÉRICA S.A. can provide manufacturing proposals from Guatemala or local supervision and installation support in Costa Rica.

2. BACKGROUND
The special waste incinerator, including psychoactive substances such as marijuana and cocaine, generates combustion gases with an approximate flow rate of 9.00 m³/s at temperatures close to 940 °C.
emission in order to comply with current environmental regulations.
The incineration system includes a gas scrubber installed in the piping and a baghouse filter. The scrubber is located immediately before the combustion gases enter the baghouse filter.

5.SCOPE
The design of the centrifugal scrubber for the special waste incinerator includes sizing, recommendations, and support during construction and startup.
The centrifugal scrubber was designed using the information provided in the technical reports from AGQ Costa Rica S.A. for normal operating conditions, assuming that such information is reliable and presents no uncertainty.
The design does not include manufacturing of the control equipment. This equipment may be manufactured by INCINER8 LATINOAMÉRICA S.A. or supported through local manufacturing assistance in Costa Rica.

Justification: Once the particulate matter is removed, washing is more efficient and the formation of sludge or scale by solid particles is avoided.

Additional details:
Water supply:
- Total amount of water: 1.2 L/s (18.4 gal/min)
- Amount of water per nozzle: 5.8 L/min (1.53 gal/min)
Note: The correct thing to do is almost always to use calcium hydroxide between 3 and 8%, not just water.
The less concentrated the solution, the less fouling and the better hydraulic handling, but also the lower the neutralization capacity. Agitation systems are required in the tanks so that limescale does not settle.
Calcium hydroxide is cheaper than sodium hydroxide (NaOH), but it is more difficult to handle mechanically. If your scrubber is small or you don't want to deal with solid sludge, sodium hydroxide is a much cleaner liquid alternative, although quite a bit more expensive.
- Nickel-chromium alloys (Inconel 625 or Hastelloy C-276): If metal is required in the shock zone, these alloys offer excellent resistance to heat oxidation and acid corrosion. However, even these require cooling (water jackets) if the exposure is direct and prolonged at 1000 °C.
- Silicon carbide (SiC): Ideal for spray nozzles (sprays) in the inlet area, as it resists abrasion from particles and does not deform in extreme heat.
Washer Body Construction Materials: Once the flue gases have been "tempered" and their temperature drops to ranges of 60 to 90 °C, the materials change to prioritize chemical resistance.
- Super austenitic stainless steel (AL-6XN or 254 SMO): Greater than or equal to 316L steel, specifically designed to resist chloride pitting in humid environments.
- Glass fiber reinforced plastic (FRP/GRP): Very common due to its low cost and zero corrosion.
High-quality resins should be used. Note: Can only be used if the pre-cooling system is guaranteed to never fail.
- Glass or fluorine-polymer coatings (PTFE/PFA): These are applied over carbon steel to create a total barrier against strong acids.
Nozzles:
- Distributor: Acodinsa
- Number of nozzles: 12
- Sprinkler Pattern: Full Cone
- Spray Angle: 90° (M)
- Nozzle Material: Metal
- Nozzle Type: NCS1003
- Nozzle pressure: 10 psi
- Nozzle Diameter: 0.22 in

Observations:
Seek advice from the nozzle distributor to obtain the exact number of nozzles and the type of nozzles required to handle 18.4 gal/min of water 1.53 gal/min = 5.8 L/min per nozzle and cover the height of the centrifugal scrubber spray tube, from below into the water reservoir.
The washer must have access for maintenance and change of nozzles.
The centrifugal scrubber will be supported by iron angles with crossbars to give it the necessary rigidity.

AUXILIARY EQUIPMENT
a) WATER PUMP
It is required to circulate the water and feed the centrifugal scrubber.
It must have the capacity to handle 18.4 gal/min and overcome losses from the water recirculation and treatment system.
Image 7. Schematic of the basic components of the control system
b) WATER RECIRCULATION AND TREATMENT SYSTEM A sedimentation tank and water supply are required to ensure the removal of particles. A tank with a capacity of 8.7 m3 of water and a residence time of 1.0 h is required. The dimensions of the tank will be:
Height (H): 1.5 m
Width (W): 2.0 m
Length (L): 3.0 m

CONCLUSIONS AND IMPORTANT ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
The current system after the relief chimney will be modified, the operation of the bag filter will be omitted since it will not be operational, it will be replaced for gas control by the centrifugal scrubber presented in this design.
The current systems installed (horizontal duct spray nozzle) would be part of the system, the wet phase would come into operation together with the centrifugal scrubber after the relief chimney.
In order to comply 100% with the projected results and modeling obtained, it is necessary to respect the dimensions of the equipment, what must and can be modified is the location of the ducts according to the space available in the project.
Página 15 de 16
The equipment will be connected to the current horizontal duct, and the length of the pipe will depend on the distance between this equipment and the fan. The location of the equipment on the plan will define this length.
The current exhaust system fan at the end of the circuit can be reused for the entire system, however, if necessary, it must be reconditioned and rearranged according to the new location and available space.
Peripheral equipment such as compressors, circuits, pipes, among others, can be relocated in case the pipeline requires it for its correct operation.
The set of plans is attached separately in order to review in detail what is described in this design.
The technical sheet of the suggested pumps that will be part of the recirculation system is attached.
The bag filter, due to its configuration and design, would cease to operate in the proposed system, not only because of its current deterioration but also because it would be inoperative due to the increase in the flow of gases vs. the initial design with the theoretical flow.
