About this file

This is a physical design data package supporting a federal solicitation for bridge replacement and roadway infrastructure work. The Holzwarth Culvert project, located in Rocky Mountain National Park approximately nine miles north of Grand Lake, Colorado, involves replacing a deficient six-barrel corrugated metal arch pipe culvert with a new steel girder bridge. The Federal Highway Administration, through the Department of Transportation, is managing this solicitation (Number 6982AF27B000004) for Project CO FTNP ROMO 407(1). The principal work scope includes removal of the existing structure, construction of a new steel girder bridge with cast-in-place concrete deck, installation of new bridge abutments and micropiles, temporary stream diversion with riprap, new aggregate roadway surfacing, relocation of an electrical line, and relocation of historic head gates onto a new concrete slab. Key work items quantified include one bridge removal, 120 tons of roadway aggregate (Method 2), one prefabricated modular steel vehicular bridge (10' wide x 48' long), 180 linear feet of 8.68-inch diameter micropiles, and one lump sum temporary stream diversion installation.

The project site requires special access considerations; the Holzwarth Culvert Access Road is approximately 13 feet wide with tight turns, necessitating temporary widening to prevent truck off-tracking onto sensitive environmental resources. Construction access is restricted to within 100 feet west of the bridge, and a temporary truck turnaround will be required. The anticipated schedule indicates advertisement in September 2026 with award expected in December 2026. The site elevation is 8,900 feet, and the structure conveys Colorado River flow while providing access to the Holzwarth Historic Site, employee housing, and National Park Service and Forest Service recreation opportunities.
