About this file
This is a Geotechnical Report supporting a federal construction solicitation for replacement of the Holzwarth Culvert in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado. The report provides technical analysis and subsurface investigation data necessary for the design and construction of a new steel girder bridge to replace an existing six-barrel corrugated metal arch pipe culvert on the Holzwarth Access Road near Grand Lake, Colorado at 8,900 feet elevation. The culvert currently conveys Colorado River flow and provides access to the Holzwarth Historic Site, employee housing, and National Park Service and Forest Service recreation facilities.
The project, identified as Solicitation Number 6982AF27B000004 (Project CO FTNP ROMO 407(1)), is being administered by the Federal Highway Administration under the Department of Transportation. The scope includes removal of the existing deficient culvert and construction of a new steel girder bridge with cast-in-place concrete deck, new bridge abutments and micropiles, temporary stream diversion, ripric placement, aggregate roadway surfacing, relocation of an electrical line, and relocation of historic head gates. Principal work items include bridge removal (1 each), 120 tons of roadway aggregate, a prefabricated steel bridge (10' wide x 48' long), 180 linear feet of 8.68-inch diameter micropiles, and temporary stream diversion. The anticipated advertisement is September 2026 with award anticipated in December 2026. The geotechnical report provides essential subsurface data to support contractor bidding and project execution in this sensitive environmental and historic location with access constraints requiring temporary widening of the 13-foot access road.
