About this file
This document is an addendum to federal contract specifications for hazardous material storage modifications at a facility identified as H8, part of a Rome Research Site project (COA #101084, expiration date 08/31/2027).
The addendum addresses compliance with NFPA 55 – 7.1.10 separation requirements for hazardous materials by implementing single hazardous material storage cylinders in NFPA-rated fire cabinets. The specification requires 20-foot separation between each classification of stored chemicals (Toxics, Flammables, Oxidizers, and Corrosives) unless all hazards are housed in fire cabinets or separated by 0.5-hour fire barriers with broken line of sight. Since the facility space is constrained and wall breaks cannot achieve adequate line-of-sight separation, NFPA-rated fire cabinets were selected. These cabinets provide redundant gas monitoring, extra exhaust capacity, contained control components (shutoffs, regulators, purge stations), lockable doors, and integrated sprinkler heads. The modifications cascade throughout the mechanical and electrical systems, including increased exhaust ductwork sizing, upsized exhaust fan requiring a variable frequency drive (VFD), adjusted air handling unit (AHU-H8-MELAB) parameters, and additional fire protection piping and drainage.
The electrical addendum specifies detailed modifications across multiple drawings: exhaust fan equipment (EF-H8-STOR) upgrades from ½ HP single-phase to 1 HP three-phase with corresponding circuit breaker and conduit changes; emergency check valve controller panel wiring (ECVCP-3 and ECVCP-4) into low-voltage panelboard circuit 25; and panelboard schedule updates changing a 20-ampere single-phase circuit breaker to a 15-ampere three-phase circuit breaker in panelboard LVP-H8P-1.

Text version
In summary, single hazardous material storage cylinders in NFPA fire cabinets are included to satisfy the requirements of NFPA 55 – 7.1.10 “Separation from Hazardous Conditions”. This section requires 20’ between each classification of stored chemicals (Toxics, Flammables, Oxidizers and Corrosives) unless all hazards are in fire cabinets or separated by 0.5 hr fire barriers breaking line of sight. As the room is quite undersized, wall breaks are not able to separate the line of sight between chemical classes, therefore proceeding with NFPA rated fire cabinets. There are added safety benefits: redundant gas monitoring, extra exhaust, contained controls (shutoffs, regulators, purge stations) for neater installation, lockable doors to prevent tampering, and closer/extra sprinklers.
Following the domino effect of incorporating NFPA gas cabinets and integrated control panels, modifications to the exhaust ductwork serving the room (increased by quite a bit), upsized the exhaust fan, which now requires a VFD, adjusted the parameters for AHU-H8-MELAB, and added FP piping and drain to pick up the sprinkler heads built into the cabinets.
Additionally, the following electrical addendum notes:
Refer to drawing ME-1, sheet 42:
1. Refer to item EF-H8-STOR, item number 9, change to read:
a. 1 HP, 3 phase, nameplate voltage 200, supply voltage 208, 15A-3P circuit breaker, 3-#12 plus 1-#12 ground in ½” conduit, adjustable frequency controller, in lieu of ½ HP, 1 phase, nameplate voltage 115, supply voltage 120, 20A-1P circuit breaker, 2-#12 plus 1-#12 ground in ½” conduit, speed controller noted.
Refer to drawing E-6, sheet 48:
1. Wire emergency CV controller panel ECVCP-3 and ECVCP-4 in Tank Storage H8-E (refer to drawing P-1 for exact locations) into LVP-H8-2A circuit 25 with ECVCP-1 and
ECVCP-2.
Refer to drawing E-19, sheet 61:
1. Refer to Panelboard Schedule LVP-H8P-1:
a. Change 20A-1P circuit breaker to read 15A-3P circuit breaker.
