About this file

This is a Questions and Answers document addressing piping material specifications for a federal facility construction project with both cleanroom and non-cleanroom environments.

For non-cleanroom environments, the specifications require Type L Copper for domestic water systems, and either PVC or Cast Iron for both sanitary and storm piping above and below ground. The document clarifies that welded stainless steel piping (orbital or socket) is acceptable as an alternative to brazed stainless steel for manifold gas piping. For chlorine gas piping specifically, 316L stainless steel is required with dedicated automated nitrogen purge blocks to reduce moisture levels to less than 10 parts per billion in accordance with ASTM F1397, SEMI E49, and SEMI F21. Hazardous gases including chlorine gas (Cl2), boron trichloride (BCl3), hydrogen (H2), methane (CH4), and nitrogen trifluoride (NF3) must include a 316L stainless steel outer safety containment jacket conforming to ASTM A213 and ASTM A1016, with assemblies leak tested to ASTM E499 and ASTM E1003. For cleanroom environments, all process gases and utilities require seamless 316L stainless steel tubing per ASTM A-269 and A-632, factory cleaned for ultra-high purity service per SEMI F19 and SEMI F20, electropolished to 15 microinches Ra maximum roughness. Pipe joints must be orbital welded after a minimum five-minute Grade 5 Argon purge cycle at 25 cubic feet per hour to reduce oxygen and moisture to less than 1 part per million. All hangers, supports, and clamps exposed to the cleanroom environment must be 316L stainless steel. The document references The Chlorine Institute's Pamphlet 6 for chlorine gas piping installation precautions and requires unit pricing for ½-inch 316L stainless steel gas distribution tubing with floor supports, valves, and caps.

Questions:

Please provide a pipe material specification for the following systems:

Domestic Water (non-cleanroom environment) Type L Copper Above and below ground sanitary piping (non-cleanroom environment) Only either PVC or Cast Iron acceptable

Above and below ground storm piping (non-cleanroom environment) Only either PVC or Cast Iron acceptable

Manifold gas piping is noted to be “brazed stainless steel”. This is not a typical piping method. Would welded stainless steel piping be acceptable (orbital or socket)?

Provide specification and details on the double walled hazardous gases.

Provide specifications on what specific steel piping is acceptable for chlorine gas piping.

**SEE BELOW**

Refer to specification section 22 00 00, replace section 2.1.4 with the following:

2.1.4 Stainless Steel Piping Systems:

2.1.4.1 General Requirements:

a. Furnish and install stainless steel oxygen, nitrogen, argon, compressed air, helium, sulfur hexafluoride, carbon tetrafluoride, trifluoromethane, hydrogen, methane, nitrogen trifluoride, deionized water supply and return, domestic cold water and domestic hot water supply and recirc piping systems serving the clean rooms and shown to be installed within.

2.1.4.2 Products:

a. Process Gases (all, everywhere shown on Drawings):

1. Pipe material shall be seamless tubing, 316L stainless steel in compliance with ASTM A-269 and A-632, factory cleaned for ultra-high purity (UHP) gas service complying with SEMI F19 and SEMI F20, electropolished, with interior roughness no greater that 15 micro-inches Ra in accordance with ANSI/ASME B46.1.

2. Acceptable manufacturers of UHP stainless steel tubing would be Dockweiler, Swagelok or approved equal.

3. Pipe joints shall be orbital welded after a minimum 5 minute per

20 feet of tubing Grade 5 Argon purge cycle (of at least 25scfh) to reduce oxygen and moisture content to less than 1ppm.

4. Changes in direction shall be made with a fitting manufactured from seamless tube stock or can be made with a field bend with a minimum radius of 8 times the tube diameter (ie. 0.5” OD tube needs bend radius of 4.0”).

5. Chlorine Gas (Cl2) and Boron Trichloride (BCl3) piping systems shall include dedicated, automated nitrogen purge blocks to reduce moisture levels to less than 10ppb in accordance with ASTM F1397, SEMI E49, and SEMI F21.

6. Hazardous gases (Cl2, BCl3, H2, CH4, & NF3) shall also have a 316L stainless steel outer safety containment jacket conforming to ASTM A213 and ASTM A1016 with the assemblies leak tested to ASTM E499 and

ASTM E1003.

7. Individual tube assemblies not being immediately installed shall receive a positive nitrogen or argon purge filtered to 0.05 micron and have ends covered with two layers of clean polyethylene plastic.

8. Any tape used shall be at least three inches from any area to be welded and shall have the tape residue cleaned promptly after the tape is removed.

9. All welds shall be exposed on installed tubing, do not cover welds with saddles, jackets, pads or supports to allow for routine inspections.

b. Utilities (Sanitary, Storm, DCW/DHW/DHWR, Deionized Water S/R, Compressed Air, within cleanroom envelope):

1. Pipe material shall be schedule 40, type 316L, stainless steel conforming to ASTM Specification A-312 and ANSI Standard B36.19.

2. Pipe joints shall be orbital welded.

c. Hangers:

1. All hangers, pipe clamps, supports, etc., shall be 316L stainless steel.

Refer to drawing P-1, remove mention of dissimilar metal joining methods (brazing), and singling out Chlorine Gas piping as a separate piping material.

Notes to read on right side of page:

- Provide unit price(s) for ½”, 316L stainless steel gas distribution tubing below cleanroom raised floor complete with floor supports, valves, and caps for cleanroom equipment. Final connections shall be as field directed by Owner.

- ALL piping (various gases, DCW, DHW, DHWR, DIWS, DIWR, SAN, & Vent), hangers and supports exposed to the cleanroom environment (in, above or below rooms H8-K, H8-L, H8-M) shall be 316L stainless steel (non-porous, no particulate shedding, anti-microbial, & corrosion resistant).

Gas Storage Manifold Detail general note to be modified to:

- Gas piping to be 316L stainless steel. Carefully follow installation precautions as laid out in The Chlorine Institutes Pamphlet 6, “Piping Systems for Dry Chlorine”.
