SECTION 16859

HEATING CABLE

PART I – GENERAL

1.1 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

A. Delivery and Storage:

1. Deliver material to site in undamaged condition.

1.2 REQUIRED SUBMITTALS:

A. General: Submit each item in this Section according to the Condition of the Contract and Division 1 Specification Section.

B. Manufacturers Literature:

1. Technical Data, Catalog Cuts, Installation Procedures and Operation & Maintenance Manuals.

PART II – PRODUCTS

2.1 HEATING CABLE:

A. Heat cable shall be Chromalox SRF5-1RG or SRF5-2RG Roof and Gutter Heating Cable or approved equal. 16 AWG, nickel-coated copper, tinned copper ground braid under jacket, U.V. stabilized weatherproof jacket and 12 watts/ft. output wattage in snow or ice @ 32 degrees F.

2.2 AUTOMATIC TEMPERATURE CONTROLS:

A. Temperature Controls shall be Chromalox RTAS or RTAS-EP Ambient Sensing Single Point On/Off Temperature Controls or approved equal. Ambient sensing thermostats, 0-225 degrees F. temperature rating, 9/16” O.D. x 4” stainless steel probe, stainless steel hardware, Ordinary or Hazardous (Div. 2) Areas and rated NEMA 4X. Set controls at 40 degrees F.

PART III – EXECUTION

3.1 INSTALLATION:

A. Project Work shall include at least a 20 amp circuit breaker installed in an existing power panel. Breakers shall be marked “roof heating cable controls” in the panel.

B. Controls shall be wired through a pilot light mounted next to the existing main power panel. Pilot light shall be red in color.

C. Heat cable shall not be cut or spliced unless absolutely necessary. Heat cable shall be a continuous run along the gutter and twice through the downspout to form a cable run that is free of splices. When splicing is required, the contractor shall use manufacturer recommended splice and tee kits. The contractor shall use manufacturer recommended end seal kits where needed.

D. Install heat Cable in all gutters and downspouts. Install heat cable in a manner that will prevent the wind from lifting the heat cable from the gutter and downspout.
