ALLERGIST
SUMMARY. Examines, diagnoses, performs diagnostic tests, and treats allergic disorders. Manages allergy services. Related DoD Occupational Group: 260105.
1 QUALIFICATIONS.
1.1 Experience. Completion of a fellowship in allergy acceptable to the Surgeon General, HQ USAF, is mandatory.
1.2 Current board certification by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology
2. TYPE OF WORK.
Examines, diagnoses, and treats allergic diseases. Prepares and reviews case histories and obtains data through interviews. Examines patients and determines required x-ray examinations, clinical laboratory tests, and diagnostic challenge tests (dermal on inhalation or ingestion). Interprets tests results and evaluates findings. Prescribes specific medications, diets, and immunotherapy and overseas nursing personnel in injection therapy. In emergencies, treats patients suffering from anaphylactic shock, angioedema, urticaria, bronchospasm, and other severe allergic diseases.
Manages allergy services. Formulates plans and procedures for allergy services, schedules clinic and allergic testing, and assigns nurses and medical technicians. Advises on kind and quantity of allergy supplies and equipment. Coordinates allergy services with other medical activities. Instructs interns, residents, and fellows in allergy procedures. Serves as consultant on allergy.
ANESTHESIA TECHNICIAN / TECHNOLOGIST
1. QUALIFICATIONS.
1.1 Graduation from an Anesthesia training program approved by the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians (ASATT).
1.2 Current Certification as a Certified Anesthesia Technician (Cer.A.T.) or as a Certified Anesthesia Technologist (Cer. A.TT.) through the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians (ASATT).
1.3 Have a minimum of two (2) years of experience within the last three (3) years, or be a graduate of an ASATT approved two (2) year educational program of study in Anesthesia.
2. TYPE OF WORK.
2.1 Responsible for pre-operative set up of all anesthesia equipment and supplies in both the Surgical Suite and Labor and Delivery. Will clean and replace used material as needed.
2.2 Readies operating rooms and appropriate equipment based on the daily schedule.
2.3 Responds to the needs of anesthesia providers during surgery. Replaces malfunctioning equipment. Troubleshoots machine malfunctions. Performs routine cleaning and operator maintenance of all anesthesia machines.
2.4 Keeps Anesthesia Element Chief apprised of malfunctions. Urgently replaces machines and equipment when necessary.
2.5 Cleans and restocks anesthesia machines and equipment carts at the end of the day. Cleans and replaces used equipment.
2.6 Maintains appropriate levels of non-controlled drugs as established by anesthesia providers.
2.7 Checks drug stock levels daily and orders needed items from the pharmacy. Appropriately identifies and discards outdated drugs by performing checks at least monthly.
ANESTHESIOLOGIST
1. QUALIFICATIONS
1.1 Current board certification by the American Board of Anesthesiology or the American Osteopathic Board of Anesthesiology.
1.2 CPR, BCLS, and ACLS certification must be obtained through the American Heart Association and/or Red Cross approved training program.
2. TYPE OF WORK. The duties include but are not limited to the following:
2.1 The anesthesiologist shall perform essentially the same duties as those required of any Medical Corps Officer or government Civil Service physician of similar experience and in similar duty assignments. Services include, but are not limited to:
2.2 The anesthesiologist shall be qualified to provide routine and emergent anesthesia care for neonatal through geriatric patients with American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classifications I - VI.
2.3 Specifically, the anesthesiologist shall provide regional and/or general anesthesia care for the following subspecialties: general surgery, obstetrics, gynecology, cardiothoracic, vascular, adult dentistry, pediatric dentistry, otolaryngology, neurosurgery, urology, ophthalmology, oral surgery, orthopedics, plastic surgery, podiatry, and dermatology.
2.4 The anesthesiologist shall also provide resuscitative care during a cardiopulmonary arrest, and sedation or general anesthetic care at remote locations.
2.5 The anesthesiologist shall personally provide this care, or he/she shall supervise the simultaneous delivery of anesthesia care by up to four certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs); administer anesthesia in lieu of CRNA to patients whose condition poses a particular anesthetic difficulty.
2.6 Administer appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic nerve blocks in the treatment of acute and chronic pain.
2.7 Oversee the activities of the recovery room and administer appropriate drug and respiratory therapy in the recovery room setting. Implement the proper use of mechanical ventilators in the recovery room, and as necessary, in the intensive care units.
2.8 Provide consultation regarding preoperative preparation, intra and postoperative anesthetic management, and treatment of chronic pain patients.
2.9 The anesthesiologist shall consult with other members of the Local MTF medical and nursing staff to provide quality perioperative care.
2.10 The anesthesiologist shall document his or her medical care in accordance with Local MTF regulations, Air Force Instructions (AFI), and the standards established by the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
2.11 The anesthesiologist shall continue to provide ongoing anesthesia care until he or she is relieved by a qualified anesthesiologist or certified registered nurse anesthetist.
2.12 The anesthesiologist shall attend monthly Anesthesiology Department meetings (or Surgical Services Department meetings in the absence of an Anesthesiology Department), and quarterly MTF Medical/Dental Professional Staff meetings; if requested, the anesthesiologist will present medical lectures, lead discussions concerning medical topics, and teach students.
AUDIOLOGIST
2 SUMMARY. Provides care and treatment for human ailments under general supervision and direction of a medical officer. Plans, conducts, and directs research in area of professional practice.
3 QUALIFICATIONS.
3.1 Possess a master’s degree from a program in Audiology accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA).
3.2 Either possess a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A) from the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) or certification through the American Board of Audiology.
3.3 Is licensed in one of the fifty States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam or the US Virgin Islands.
3.4 A minimum of 24 months of experience within the last 36 months.
4 TYPE OF WORK.
4.1 Identify, assess, and manage auditory, balance, and other neural systems. Use audiometers, computers, and other testing devices to measure the loudness at which a person begins to hear sounds, the ability to distinguish between sounds, and the nature and extent of hearing loss.
4.2 Provide comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures of the hearing and balance mechanisms including intraoperative monitoring of the cranial nerves, cerumen removal, cochlear implant assessment and management, posturography, and other advanced balance mechanism evaluations.
4.3 Interview patient and records patient’s case history to determine previous ailments and complaints.
4.4 Perform examinations to determine evidences of physiological or anatomical abnormality. Supplement examination by arranging laboratory test analyses and diagnostic xrays. Interpret laboratory results in evaluating examination findings.
4.5 May recommend, fit, and dispense personal or large area amplification systems, such as hearing aids and alerting devices.
4.6 Plan, administer, and record progress of prescribed courses of treatment with limits of area of practice. Accomplish therapeutic procedures after consulting medical officers.
4.7 Refer patient to and consults with physician for further case diagnosis and treatment planning.
4.8 Provide instructions to patients regarding prescribed therapeutic exercises.
4.9 Administer medication upon prescription by physician, with limitations established by the Director of Base Medical Services.
4.10 Instruct and supervise assistants. Prescribe and supervise instruction in use and maintenance of therapeutic devices, exercises, or procedures. Fit and adjust appliances, and advise patients on care of therapeutic or corrective equipment.
4.11 Participates in special programs. Participates in specialized Air Force health programs such as hearing conservation program, exceptional family members program, aerospace medical program, and occupational health program.
4.12 Measures noise levels in workplaces and conducts hearing protection programs.
BONE DENSITOMETRIST
SUMMARY. Operates equipment to conduct bone densitometry tests and assists radiologist or physician with special procedures. Prepares equipment and patients for diagnostic studies and therapeutic procedures. Performs technical and administrative densitometry activities. Ensures health protective measures such as universal precautions and radiation protection measures are established and employed. Assists the radiation oncologist. Manages densitometry functions and activities. Related DOD Occupational Subgroup: 313.
1. QUALIFICATIONS.
1.1 Knowledge. Human anatomy and physiology; medical terminology and ethics; legal aspects of medicine; healthcare accreditation standards; radiation physics, biology, and protection; basic electronics theory; techniques of operating x-ray and specialized diagnostic imaging equipment; radiographic positioning; patient care and monitoring techniques; image recording media and processing techniques; sensitometric and quality control procedures; aseptic and sterile techniques; reactions to contrast media; cardiopulmonary resuscitation and methods of recording the fluoroscopic image.
1.2 Education. Completion of high school or general education development equivalency with successful completion of courses in algebra, and biology or general science are mandatory. Successful completion of high school or collegiate courses in chemistry and physics is desirable.
1.3 Training. The following training is mandatory:
1.3.1 Completion of an accredited radiologic course. Also, experience operating ray equipment, and producing and processing radiographs. Experience performing or supervising functions such as producing radiographs, assisting with fluoroscopy and special radiographic procedures, or treating disease by radiotherapy.
1.3.2 Completion of Certified Operator Training on specific Prodigy/Lunar (GE) Bone Densitometer equipment.
1.3.3 Must have and maintain licensure as a Medical Radiologic Technologist.
1.3.4 Must have four hours of documented radiation safety training within the last twenty-four months.
1.4 At least 12 months of bone densitometry experience within the last 36 months.
2. TYPE OF WORK.
2.1 Operates bone densitometry equipment to produce routine diagnostic test results. Computes techniques and adjusts control panel settings. Performs calibration and maintains documentation of required daily quality assurance of equipment.
2.2 Ensures bone densitometry schedule is fully booked using current computer systems. Performs patient check-in process in accordance with local procedures.
2.3 Instructs patients preparing for procedures. Prepares sterile supplies and equipment. Operates accessory equipment such as digital imagers and vital signs monitoring equipment.
2.4 Positions patient to scan desired anatomic structures. Exposes and processes scans and monitors the patient during the procedure.
2.5 Makes adjustments based on the specific examination requirements. Records, processes, and analyzes the scan. Enters and maintains data in radiology information systems.
2.6 Prints scan data and forwards to the physician responsible for reading the study
2.7 Assists physicians with special examinations.
CARDIAC CATHETERIZATION LABORATORY TECHNICIAN
SUMMARY. Perform a variety of technical and supportive patient care tasks to assist physicians in performing complex and invasive cardiac catheterization procedures.
1. QUALIFICATIONS.
1.1 Education. Completion of an accredited Registered Cardiovascular Technician Certification (RCVT) program is mandatory.
1.2 Experience. The technician must have a minimum of two years professional Cardiac Catheterization experience. The technician must have worked full time or part time (greater than 20hrs/week) as a professional Cardiac Catheterization technician for at least 12 months in the last 24 months.
2. TYPE OF WORK.
2.1 The technician shall be required to perform Cardiac Catheterization services including the following:
2.2 Provide clinical assistance in the cardiac catheterization lab.
2.3 Set up the lab for procedures.
2.4 Assist the cardiologist during procedures.
2.5 Provide assistance in other cardiopulmonary service areas at the discretion of the Cardiology Element Chief.
2.6 Educate and train new cardiac catheterization lab technicians.
2.7 Maintain cardiac catheterization lab supplies.
2.8 Assist with ordering and maintaining supplies for the cardio service.
2.9 Ensure all equipment is properly cleaned and stored at the end of each work shift.
2.10 Ensure preventive maintenance and routine cleaning are performed as directed.
2.11 Ensure a safe work environment and employee safe work habits.
2.12 The technician shall provide patients with the utmost care and attention. All patients shall be assured of their privacy and personal dignity.
2.13 The technician shall prepare all documentation to meet or exceed established standards of the MTF, to include, but not limited to, timeliness, accuracy, content and signature. Only MTF and Air Force-approved abbreviations shall be used for documentation of the patient health record.
CARDIAC SURGICAL TECHNICIAN
1.1 Education. The technician shall have a high school degree and be a graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program or equivalent. At a minimum, the technician must have a current specialty area certificate from an accredited national, state or military trained equivalent school.
1.2 Certification. Certification as a Surgical Services Technologists Certification is required.
1.3 Experience. At least three years of experience as a surgical technician for cardiac surgical procedures is required. Experience is also desired as a surgical technician for general, vascular, obstetrics, gynecology and orthopedics procedures and in heart surgery.
2. TYPE OF WORK.
2.1 Set up all surgical instruments, sutures, saws, and cannulas.
2.2 Assist surgeon while opening chest, cannulating and harvesting conduits in the surgical technician.
2.3 Educate and train new cardiac surgical technicians.
2.4 Maintain cardiac and thoracic surgical supplies.
2.5 Assist with ordering and maintaining surgical supplies for the cardiothoracic service.
2.6 Ensure all equipment is properly cleaned and stored at the end of each work shift. Ensure preventive maintenance and routine cleaning are performed as directed.
2.7 Ensure a safe work environment and employee safe work habits.
2.8 The cardiac surgical technician shall provide patients with the utmost care and attention. All patients shall be assured of their privacy and personal dignity.
2.9 The cardiac surgical technician shall prepare all documentation to meet or exceed established standards of the MTF, to include, but not limited to, timeliness, accuracy, content and signature. Only MTF and Air Force-approved abbreviations shall be used for documentation of the patient health record.
CARDIOPULMONARY LAB TECHNICIAN
SUMMARY: Performs cardiopulmonary laboratory functions and activities for noninvasive diagnostic cardiac procedures, invasive diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures, pulmonary function testing, diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopies, and respiratory therapy. Related DoD Occupational Subgroup: 300.
1. QUALIFICATIONS.
1.1 Knowledge. Knowledge is mandatory of: general anatomy and physiology; cardiopulmonary system structures and functions; basic pharmacology; patient care theory, procedures, and techniques; medical terminology; aseptic techniques; medical ethics; resuscitation techniques; maintaining and operating cardiopulmonary laboratory diagnostic and therapeutic equipment; medications, and medical computer systems.
1.2 Training. Completion of the following training is mandatory:
1.2.1 An accredited cardiopulmonary laboratory specialist course.
1.3 Experience. Experience performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to care for and treat cardiopulmonary laboratory patients.
1.4 At least 12 months of experience within the last 18 months.
2. TYPE OF WORK.
2.1 Performs and supervises cardiopulmonary functions such as electrocardiograms, exercise stress testing, and ambulatory electrocardiographic monitoring. Assesses heart structures and flows via 2-D and m-mode echocardiography, Doppler, and contrast colors. Assists physician with transesophageal and stress echocardiography, and radionuclide and thallium studies. Interprets arrhythmias. Serves on cardiac catheterization (invasive) procedures teams.
2.2 Assists in placing specialized equipment and instruments into cardiovascular system for diagnosis and therapy, including cardiac pacemaker and balloon pump insertion. Operates and maintains specialized equipment to evaluate respiratory or pulmonary functions, and respiratory physiology. Performs spirometry, flow volume loops, lung volumes, diffusion capacities, and closing volumes. Draws and analyzes arterial blood gas samples. Maintains quality control of arterial blood gas machines and CO oximeters, including proficiency testing. Performs broncho-provovation and exercise testing. Assists physician with fiberoptic bronchoscopy for diagnosis and therapy. Under orders of a physician, administers respiratory care such as oxygen and aerosol therapy, mechanical ventilator management, and preparation and administration of respiratory medications. Assists physician with intubation and extubation procedures. Performs endotracheal tube care. Maintains patient airway. Ensures bronchial hygiene through incentive spirometry and specialized breathing instructions. Prepares and instructs patient to use equipment or perform procedure. Checks patient and equipment, and changes equipment. Monitors data display on physiological equipment, and obtains and records vital signs. Performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Assesses and documents patient status. Performs user maintenance on equipment. Adheres to infection control and universal precautions procedures, including disposition of contaminated materials. Practices safety and security measures.

CERTIFIED REGISTERED NURSE ANESTHETIST (CRNA)
1 QUALIFICATIONS. CRNAs shall:
1.1 Shall be a graduate from an accredited baccalaureate degree program in nursing (BSN) acceptable to the U.S. Air Force Surgeon General.
1.2 Have and maintain a current license to practice nursing as a registered nurse in a US jurisdiction.
1.3 Must have a Master’s degree from an accredited program in nurse anesthesia
1.4 Must complete a course in nurse anesthesia acceptable to the U.S. Air Force Surgeon General.
1.5 Shall hold current certification or recertification from an approved national CRNA certifying body. Shall maintain certification and be recertified every 2 years by the Council on Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists.
1.6 Have and maintain current certification in advanced cardiac life support (ACLS).
1.7 Have experience in the delivery of and monitoring of all types of anesthesia utilized in the delivery of obstetrical anesthesia (general endotracheal, subarachnoid block and epidural).
1.8 Have at least 12 months within the last 24 months providing epidural analgesia (labor epidurals).
2 TYPE OF WORK. The quality of CRNA practice shall meet or exceed reasonable standards of professional practice for the health care concerned as determined by the same authority that governs military medical professionals in the same discipline. The duties include but are not limited to the following:
2.1 Manage patient anesthesia experience, perform preoperative evaluations and preparations, administer monitored anesthesia care, regional and general anesthesia, monitor and manage patient reactions to anesthesia and surgery, manage fluid therapy, perform and manage invasive monitoring, and perform postoperative evaluations as privileged by the credentials committee.
2.2 Advise appropriate anesthesiologist of adverse reactions necessitating non-delegated medical decisions; take appropriate actions as directed or required.
2.3 Assist with the training of other staff personnel, act as clinical adjunctive faculty for student nurse anesthetists in their clinical phase, to include phase II anesthesia students, in venipuncture and intravenous therapy, respiratory care, and anesthesia.
2.4 Indicate responsibility for the contents and accuracy of all prepared reports/forms by affixing his/her own signature to the documents after validation.
2.5 Attend and participate in professional staff conferences and other appropriate professional activities as follows: (1) Professional staff meetings, (2) Surgical services meetings, and (3) Anesthesia service meetings as requested by the Chief, Department of Surgery, unless not scheduled for duty on the day in question.

CHIEF, RADIATION THERAPIST
1 QUALIFICATIONS.
1.1 Graduation from a radiation therapy training program accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiological Education (JCERT).
1.2 Current registration as a Radiation Therapist by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
1.3 Have a minimum of 60 months of experience in radiotherapy treatments, conventional and CT simulation, and have demonstrated proficiency with radiotherapy treatments and simulation.
1.4 Experience as a chief therapist, able to provide clinical oversight of radiation therapists performing simulations, radiotherapy treatments, stereotactic radiosurgery/radiotherapy treatments, and prostate brachytherapy treatments.
1.5 Experience with Varian Radiotherapy Linear Accelerators, Multi-Leaf Collimator workstations, ADAC treatment planning systems, IMPAC record & verify systems, fabrication of custom treatment device, stereotactic radiosurgery/radiotherapy, prostate brachytherapy, CT advantage Sim and simulation
1.6 Desired qualifications. In addition to the minimum required qualifications identified above, 120 months of experience is highly desired.
2 TYPE OF WORK.
2.1 Assure that all radiation therapy procedures are performed in accordance with established protocols and only upon the order of a person who is lawfully authorized to prescribe radiation therapy.
2.2 Develops and maintains a monthly continuing education program for the therapists.
2.3 Performs warm-up and quality control checks on the radiation therapy treatment machines prior to the first scheduled appointment. Ensures all equipment operates in a satisfactory and safe manner through daily checks, prompt reporting of defects to the physicist, and follow up to ensure repairs are satisfactorily executed.
2.4 Set up ultrasound unit and assist physician during volume studies and brachytherapy procedures.
2.5 Perform radiation therapist and simulation therapist duties when required.
2.6 Performs computerized tomography simulation for treatment planning to include but not limited to:
2.6.1 Inserting Intravenous Catheters (IV).
2.6.2 Administering contrast media through means of auto injector/hand injection.
2.7 Assist physicians in set up of head ring and positioning of patient for CT simulation and treatment for stereotactic radiosurgery.
2.8 Serves as clinical instructor to students. The instructor provides clinical education through the department that is consistent with the program curriculum, policies, and procedures.
2.9 Completion of documentation in accordance with local Operating Instructions and other duties as assigned.
CLINICAL GENETICIST
1 SUMMARY. Evaluates, examines, diagnoses and treats genetic diseases and conditions. Manages medical genetics services. Related DoD Occupational Group: 260105.
2 QUALIFICATIONS.
2.1 Experience. Completion of a residency or fellowship in medical genetics acceptable to the Surgeon General, HQ USAF, is mandatory.
3 TYPE OF WORK.
3.1 Evaluates, diagnoses, and treats genetic diseases. Prepares and reviews case histories and clinical records. Interviews patients or parents to obtain clinical and family histories and constructs pedigrees. Examines patients, determines need for laboratory or other testing, and interprets pedigrees, examination findings and test results. Counsels patients or parents on recurrence risks and availability of prenatal diagnosis.
3.2 Manages medical genetics services. Formulates plans and procedures for medical genetics services. Schedules use of medical genetics clinics, facilities, and laboratories and assigns nurses, nurse practitioners, genetic counselors, medical technicians, and genetic laboratory personnel. Advises on type and quantity of supplies and equipment. Coordinates medical genetics services with other medical activities. Instructs interns and residents in methods and procedures for diagnosis and management of genetic disorders.
3.3 Serves as consultant on genetic conditions and diseases.
CLINICAL NURSE - CRITICAL CARE
1 QUALIFICATIONS
1.1 Have and maintain current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) by the American Heart Association. In addition to BCLS, certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is required for the Critical Care Unit and Emergency Room. Certification in Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) is required of RNs working in the Newborn Nursery and Labor and Delivery.
