ALLERGIST
SUMMARY. Examines, diagnoses, performs diagnostic tests, and treats allergic disorders.
1 QUALIFICATIONS.
1.1 Completion of a fellowship in allergy acceptable to the Surgeon General, HQ USAF, is mandatory.
1.2 Current board certification by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology
2 TYPE OF WORK. The duties include but are not limited to the following:
2.1 Examines, diagnoses, and treats allergic diseases.
2.2 Prepares and reviews case histories and obtains data through interviews.
2.3 Examines patients and determines required x-ray examinations, clinical laboratory tests, and diagnostic challenge tests (dermal on inhalation or ingestion).
2.4 Interprets tests results and evaluates findings.
2.5 Prescribes specific medications, diets, and immunotherapy and injection therapy.
2.6 In emergencies, treats patients suffering from anaphylactic shock, angioedema, urticaria, bronchospasm, and other severe allergic diseases.
2.7 Formulates plans and procedures for allergy services,
2.8 Instructs interns, residents, and fellows in allergy procedures.
ANESTHESIA TECHNICIAN / TECHNOLOGIST
1. QUALIFICATIONS.
1.1 Graduation from an Anesthesia training program approved by the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians (ASATT) and Current Certification as a
Certified Anesthesia Technician (Cer.A.T.) or as a Certified Anesthesia Technologist
(Cer. A.TT.) through the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and
Technicians (ASATT) and a minimum of one (1) year experience as an anesthesia technician or as a medical technician with operating room and logistic experience within the last three (3) years, -OR-
1.2 Have a minimum of two (2) years of experience as an anesthesia technician or as a medical technician with operating room and logistic experience within the last five (5) years, or be a graduate of an ASATT approved two (2) year educational program of study in Anesthesia.
2. TYPE OF WORK. The duties include but are not limited to the following:
2.1 Responsible for pre-operative set up of all anesthesia equipment and supplies in both the Surgical Suite and Labor and Delivery. Will clean and replace used material as needed.
2.2 Readies operating rooms and appropriate equipment based on the daily schedule.
2.3 Responds to the needs of anesthesia providers during surgery. Replaces malfunctioning equipment. Troubleshoots machine malfunctions. Performs routine cleaning and operator maintenance of all anesthesia machines.
2.4 Keeps Anesthesia Element Chief apprised of malfunctions. Urgently replaces machines and equipment when necessary.
2.5 Cleans and restocks anesthesia machines and equipment carts at the end of the day. Cleans and replaces used equipment.
2.6 Maintains appropriate levels of non-controlled drugs as established by anesthesia providers.
2.7 Checks drug stock levels daily and orders needed items from the pharmacy.
Appropriately identifies and discards outdated drugs by performing checks at least monthly.
ANESTHESIOLOGIST
1. QUALIFICATIONS
1.1 Current board certification by the American Board of Anesthesiology or the
American Osteopathic Board of Anesthesiology.
1.2 CPR, BCLS, and ACLS certification must be obtained through the American Heart
Association and/or Red Cross approved training program.
2.1 Provide routine and emergent anesthesia care for neonatal through geriatric patients with American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classifications I - VI.
2.2 Provide regional and/or general anesthesia care for the following subspecialties:
general surgery, obstetrics, gynecology, cardiothoracic, vascular, adult dentistry, pediatric dentistry, otolaryngology, neurosurgery, urology, ophthalmology, oral surgery, orthopedics, plastic surgery, podiatry, and dermatology.
2.3 Provide resuscitative care during a cardiopulmonary arrest, and sedation or general anesthetic care at remote locations.
2.4 Supervise care and/or supervise the simultaneous delivery of anesthesia care by certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs); administer anesthesia in lieu of
CRNA to patients whose condition poses a particular anesthetic difficulty.
2.5 Administer appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic nerve blocks in the treatment of acute and chronic pain.
2.6 Oversee the activities of the recovery room and administer appropriate drug and respiratory therapy in the recovery room setting.
2.7 Implement the proper use of mechanical ventilators in the recovery room, and as necessary, in the intensive care units.
2.8 Provide consultation regarding preoperative preparation, intra and postoperative anesthetic management, and treatment of chronic pain patients.
2.9 Consult with other members of the MTF medical and nursing staff to provide quality perioperative care.
2.10 Document medical care in accordance with MTF regulations, Air Force Instructions
(AFI), and the standards established by the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
2.11 Provide ongoing anesthesia care until relieved by a qualified anesthesiologist or certified registered nurse anesthetist.
2.12 Attend monthly Anesthesiology Department meetings (or Surgical Services
Department meetings in the absence of an Anesthesiology Department), and quarterly MTF Medical/Dental Professional Staff meetings.
AUDIOLOGIST
SUMMARY. Provides care and treatment for human ailments under general supervision and direction of a medical officer. Plans, conducts, and directs research in area of professional practice.
1.1 Possess a master’s degree from a program in Audiology accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA).
1.2 Either possess a Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A) from the
American Speech-Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) or certification through the American Board of Audiology.
1.3 Is licensed in one of the fifty States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam or the US Virgin Islands.
1.4 A minimum of 24 months of experience within the last 36 months.
2.1 Identify, assess, and manage auditory, balance, and other neural systems.
2.2 Use audiometers, computers, and other testing devices to measure the loudness at which a person begins to hear sounds, the ability to distinguish between sounds, and the nature and extent of hearing loss.
2.3 Provide comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures of the hearing and balance mechanisms including intraoperative monitoring of the cranial nerves, cerumen removal, cochlear implant assessment and management, posturography, and other advanced balance mechanism evaluations.
2.4 Interview patient and records patient’s case history to determine previous ailments and complaints.
2.5 Perform examinations to determine evidences of physiological or anatomical abnormality. Supplement examination by arranging laboratory test analyses and diagnostic xrays. Interpret laboratory results in evaluating examination findings.
2.6 May recommend, fit, and dispense personal or large area amplification systems, such as hearing aids and alerting devices.
2.7 Plan, administer, and record progress of prescribed courses of treatment with limits of area of practice. Accomplish therapeutic procedures after consulting medical officers.
2.8 Refer patient to and consults with physician for further case diagnosis and treatment planning.
2.9 Provide instructions to patients regarding prescribed therapeutic exercises.
2.10 Administer medication upon prescription by physician, with limitations established by the Director of Medical Services.
2.11 Instruct and provide clinical supervision of assistants. Prescribe and supervise instruction in use and maintenance of therapeutic devices, exercises, or procedures. Fit and adjust appliances, and advise patients on care of therapeutic or corrective equipment.
2.12 Participates in special programs. Participates in specialized Air Force health programs such as hearing conservation program, exceptional family members program, aerospace medical program, and occupational health program.
2.13 Measures noise levels in workplaces and conducts hearing protection programs.
BONE DENSITOMETRIST
SUMMARY. Operates equipment to conduct bone densitometry tests and assists radiologist or physician with special procedures. Prepares equipment and patients for diagnostic studies and therapeutic procedures. Performs technical and administrative densitometry activities. Ensures health protective measures such as universal precautions and radiation protection measures are established and employed. Assists the radiation oncologist.
1.1 Knowledge. Human anatomy and physiology; medical terminology and ethics;
legal aspects of medicine; healthcare accreditation standards; radiation physics, biology, and protection; basic electronics theory; techniques of operating x-ray and specialized diagnostic imaging equipment; radiographic positioning; patient care and monitoring techniques; image recording media and processing techniques;
sensitometric and quality control procedures; aseptic and sterile techniques;
reactions to contrast media; cardiopulmonary resuscitation and methods of recording the fluoroscopic image.
1.2 Education. Completion of high school or general education development equivalency with successful completion of courses in algebra, and biology or general science are mandatory. Successful completion of high school or collegiate courses in chemistry and physics is desirable.
1.3 Training. The following training is mandatory:
1.3.1 Completion of an accredited radiologic course.
1.3.2 Experience operating x-ray equipment as well as producing and processing radiographs. Experience performing or supervising functions such as producing radiographs, assisting with fluoroscopy and special radiographic procedures, or treating disease by radiotherapy.
1.3.3 Completion of Certified Operator Training on specific Prodigy/Lunar (GE) Bone
Densitometer equipment.
1.4 Must have and maintain licensure as a Medical Radiologic Technologist.
1.5 Must have four hours of documented radiation safety training within the last twenty-four months.
1.6 At least 12 months of bone densitometry experience within the last 36 months.
2.1 Operates bone densitometry equipment to produce routine diagnostic test results.
Computes techniques and adjusts control panel settings. Performs calibration and maintains documentation of required daily quality assurance of equipment.
2.2 Performs patient check-in process in accordance with local procedures.
2.3 Instructs patients preparing for procedures. Prepares sterile supplies and equipment. Operates accessory equipment such as digital imagers and vital signs monitoring equipment.
2.4 Positions patient to scan desired anatomic structures. Exposes and processes scans and monitors the patient during the procedure.
2.5 Makes adjustments based on the specific examination requirements. Records, processes, and analyzes the scan. Enters and maintains data in radiology information systems.
2.6 Prints scan data and forwards to the physician responsible for reading the study
2.7 Assists physicians with special examinations.
CARDIAC CATHETERIZATION LABORATORY TECHNICIAN
SUMMARY. Perform a variety of technical and supportive patient care tasks to assist physicians in performing complex and invasive cardiac catheterization procedures.
1.1 Education. Completion of an accredited Registered Cardiovascular Technician
Certification (RCVT) program.
1.2 Experience. The technician must have a minimum of two years professional
Cardiac Catheterization experience. The technician must have worked full time or part time (greater than 20hrs/week) as a professional Cardiac Catheterization technician for at least 12 months in the last 24 months.
2.1 The technician shall be required to perform Cardiac Catheterization services including the following:
2.1.1 Provide clinical assistance in the cardiac catheterization lab.
2.1.2 Set up the lab for procedures.
2.1.3 Assist the cardiologist during procedures.
2.1.4 Provide assistance in other cardiopulmonary service areas at the discretion of the
Cardiology Element Chief.
2.1.5 Educate and train new cardiac catheterization lab technicians.
2.1.6 Maintain cardiac catheterization lab supplies.
2.1.7 Assist with ordering and maintaining supplies for the cardio service.
2.1.8 Ensure all equipment is properly cleaned and stored at the end of each work shift.
2.1.9 Ensure preventive maintenance and routine cleaning are performed as directed.
2.2 Ensure a safe work environment and employee safe work habits.
2.3 Provide patients with the utmost care and attention. All patients shall be assured of their privacy and personal dignity.
2.4 Prepare all documentation to meet or exceed established standards of the MTF, to include, but not limited to, timeliness, accuracy, content and signature. Only MTF and Air Force-approved abbreviations shall be used for documentation of the patient health record.
CARDIAC SURGICAL TECHNICIAN
1.1 Education. The technician shall have a high school degree and be a graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program or equivalent. At a minimum, the technician must have a current specialty area certificate from an accredited national, state or military trained equivalent school.
1.2 Certification. Certified as a Surgical Services Technologists
1.3 Experience. At least three years of experience as a surgical technician for cardiac surgical procedures.
2.1 Set up all surgical instruments, sutures, saws, and cannulas.
2.2 Assist surgeon while opening chest, cannulating and harvesting conduits in the surgical technician.
2.3 Educate and train new cardiac surgical technicians.
2.4 Maintain cardiac and thoracic surgical supplies.
2.5 Assist with ordering and maintaining surgical supplies for the cardiothoracic service.
2.6 Ensure all equipment is properly cleaned and stored at the end of each work shift.
Ensure preventive maintenance and routine cleaning are performed as directed.
2.7 Ensure a safe work environment and employee safe work habits.
2.8 Provide patients with the utmost care and attention. All patients shall be assured of

CARDIOPULMONARY LAB TECHNICIAN
SUMMARY: Performs cardiopulmonary laboratory functions and activities for noninvasive diagnostic cardiac procedures, invasive diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures, pulmonary function testing, diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopies, and respiratory therapy.
1.1 Knowledge. Must be knowledgeable of general anatomy and physiology;
cardiopulmonary system structures and functions; basic pharmacology; patient care theory, procedures, and techniques; medical terminology; aseptic techniques;
medical ethics; resuscitation techniques; maintaining and operating cardiopulmonary laboratory diagnostic and therapeutic equipment; medications, and medical computer systems.
1.2 An accredited cardiopulmonary laboratory specialist course.
1.3 Experience. Experience performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to care for and treat cardiopulmonary laboratory patients.
1.4 At least 12 months of experience within the last 18 months.
2.1 Performs cardiopulmonary functions such as electrocardiograms, exercise stress testing, and ambulatory electrocardiographic monitoring.
2.2 Assesses heart structures and flows via 2-D and m-mode echocardiography, Doppler, and contrast colors.
2.3 Assists physician with transesophageal and stress echocardiography, and radionuclide and thallium studies.
2.4 Interprets arrhythmias.
2.5 Serves on cardiac catheterization (invasive) procedures teams.
2.6 Assists in placing specialized equipment and instruments into cardiovascular system for diagnosis and therapy, including cardiac pacemaker and balloon pump insertion.
2.7 Operates and maintains specialized equipment to evaluate respiratory or pulmonary functions, and respiratory physiology.
2.8 Performs spirometry, flow volume loops, lung volumes, diffusion capacities, and closing volumes.
2.9 Draws and analyzes arterial blood gas samples. Maintains quality control of arterial blood gas machines and CO oximeters, including proficiency testing.
2.10 Performs broncho-provovation and exercise testing. Assists physician with fiberoptic bronchoscopy for diagnosis and therapy.
2.11 Under orders of a physician, administers respiratory care such as oxygen and aerosol therapy, mechanical ventilator management, and preparation and administration of respiratory medications.
2.12 Assists physician with intubation and extubation procedures. Performs endotracheal tube care. Maintains patient airway. Ensures bronchial hygiene through incentive spirometry and specialized breathing instructions.
2.13 Prepares and instructs patient to use equipment or perform procedure. Checks patient and equipment, and changes equipment. Monitors data display on physiological equipment, and obtains and records vital signs.
2.14 Performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Assesses and documents patient status. Performs user maintenance on equipment.
2.15 Adheres to infection control and universal precautions procedures, including disposition of contaminated materials. Practices safety and security measures.

1.2 Have and maintain a current license to practice nursing as a registered nurse in a US jurisdiction.
1.3 Must have a Master’s degree from an accredited program in nurse anesthesia
1.4 Must complete a course in nurse anesthesia acceptable to the U.S. Air Force Surgeon
General.
1.5 Shall hold current certification from an approved national CRNA certifying body

1.7 Have experience in the delivery of and monitoring of all types of anesthesia utilized in the delivery of obstetrical anesthesia (general endotracheal, subarachnoid block and epidural).

(labor epidurals).
2.1 Manage patient anesthesia experience, perform preoperative evaluations and preparations, administer monitored anesthesia care, regional and general anesthesia, monitor and manage patient reactions to anesthesia and surgery, manage fluid therapy, perform and manage invasive monitoring, and perform post-operative evaluations as privileged by the credentials committee.

CLINICAL NURSE – ADULT CRITICAL AND INTENSIVE CARE
1 QUALIFICATIONS
1.1 Have and maintain current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) by the
American Heart Association. In addition to BCLS, certification in Advanced Cardiac
Life Support (ACLS) is required for the Critical Care Unit.
1.2 Must have graduated from a critical care training course.
1.3 Must have completed an adult trauma training course.
1.4 Minimum of two years experience with at least one year in a critical care area of four or more beds. One year of experience must have occurred within the last 24 months.
2.1 Knowledge of interpersonal relationships and the ability to maintain composure and react appropriately while relating to patients, families, physicians, coworkers and ancillary staff; manage distraught, irritable, unreasonable or angry individuals;
and, maintain positive rapport with all individuals involved in patient care.
2.2 Knowledge of a wide range of medical disorders and conditions as appropriate and seen in critically ill patients (e.g., Ventilator Associated pneumonia and the VAP bundle, Sepsis, and ARDS).
2.3 Knowledge of professional care theories, principles, practices, and procedures to perform nursing assignments of critically ill patients. Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development, and pathophysiology of disease processes specific to the critical care unit population to include all ages from adult to geriatrics.
