SHAFT & DIAPHRAGM PACKING
The shaft labyrinth packing radial clearance was taken and recorded on form St1-0302 and can be found latter in this tab. The carbon packing was removed and sent out to have new manufactured. The labyrinth packing was removed and inspected for rubs. The findings can be found on form St1-0317, upper and lower in this tab. The packing was found to be in satisfactory condition with only light to very light rubs in most spots and moderate in a few. The packing was sent out to have new manufactured.
The new carbon rings were measured and recorded on form St1-316 latter in this report. The new packing was installed and the final readings recorded on form St1-0302 found latter in this report.
The air ejector was disassembled, cleaned and inspected. The primary nozzles were measured and recorded. The primary sizes are 0.112” and 0.115”, the secondary are 0.104” and 0.104” as found. The traps were removed, cleaned and inspected. The linkages were found to be in satisfactory condition. The floats were leak checked and found to be leak free. The traps were assembled and returned to service. The condensers were disassembled, cleaned and inspected. The tubes were cleaned using a Good Way tube cleaner. The tubes were vacuumed tested and found to be good with no leaks found. The hog ejector was removed and replaced with a new one.
The gland seal condenser was opened and inspected. The water dividers in the heads were found to have heavy erosion that needs repair. The tubes were found to be dirty with heavy amounts of mud and foreign debris. The tubes were cleaned and pressure tested with no leaks found. A hydro test was performed to insure the tube sheets were not leaking around the tubes. The dividers in the heads were weld repaired prior to assembly. After the head repairs, the gland seal condenser was found to be in satisfactory condition and returned to service.
Tetrad Packing Clearances & Services Inc. Wear Measurement Instructions
Packing: Measuring Instructions and Notes
Notes For Checking Packing Clearances 1 Each ring must always be held against the steam seal side of the neck of the packing ring
HT
1. Each ring must always be held against the steam seal side of the neck of the packing ring when checking clearances. The packing assembly drawings should be checked to be certain which side of the packing is the steam seal side.
2. Rotor must be blocked away from the generator as far as thrust allows when checking clearances.
3. The "X" clearance is always on the side of the packing long tooth toward the turbine end of the turbine and "Y" is the clearance on the side of the packing long tooth toward the generator. The clearance is the minumum distance at the point measured.
4. The packing assemblies are numbered starting from the turbine end of the machine and working toward the generator. The packing rings in one assembly are also numbered from the turbine end of the assembly working toward the generator. When recording measurements for steam packing, fill in packing and ring column with packing assembly number first, followed by a dash, then the ring number. In this instance the diaphragm stage columns will be left blank. When recording measurements for diaphragm packing, the packing and ring number column will be left blank.
Notes For Checking Packing Wear
1. Radial packing clearances and tooth height measurements are to be taken and recorded, .
2. Prior to packing segment removal, measure and record the radial clearance, left and right sides, between packing ring and rotor at points 1 and 5 (Fig. 4). The radial clearance should be taken on a short tooth.
3. After ring segment removal, measure and record the tooth height (Figs. 1 and 2) on an 8-point check (Fig. 4). Each segment must be measured at some point on the segment so that the points are equally spaced as shown in Fig. 4.
4. The height measurement can be made to either long or short tooth, whichever comes first from side of segment. Slant tooth and in-line straight tooth rings can be measured in the same manner (Fig. 3).
