About this file
This is a Limited Asbestos Survey report prepared by Emerald, Inc. for the 20th Civil Engineering Squadron at Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina, documenting the inspection and laboratory analysis of exterior pipework associated with Well No. 4, Building 2004, conducted on April 24, 2026.
The survey identified and assessed suspect asbestos-containing materials (ACM) on exterior portions of the pipework and concrete masonry unit (CMU) block penetration sections at the rear of Building 2004. Twelve samples were collected and analyzed by EMSL Analytical, Inc. using Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM) with Dispersion Staining Techniques per EPA Bulk Analysis Method 600/R-93/116, with one sample submitted for Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) confirmation testing per South Carolina asbestos regulations. The samples included Foamglass® insulation, black insulation wrap material, seam caulk, and CMU block surfacing materials in various conditions classified as good, damaged, or significantly damaged. All laboratory analysis results indicated no asbestos detected in any samples. The report concludes that the exterior pipework and CMU block materials associated with Well No. 4 at Building 2004 do not contain friable or non-friable ACM as of the inspection date, thereby clearing the facility for planned renovation activities. The report includes appendices documenting the site plan, asbestos sample log, chain of custody, building inspector licenses, and site photographs.
