PCSing?
Don't know what to do with the household chemicals the movers won't take? Don't throw them in the trash……
FREE….any military ID holder is welcome to check the "free issue" shelf for cleaning supplies, paint products, yard and garden supplies or automotive products at the Housing Self-Help Store.
Identifying a Hazardous Product
Federal law requires products to be labeled with its contents and associated hazards.
DANGER - WARNING - CAUTION
Products with these labels should be kept out of regular trash.
• Corrosive - a chemical or its vapors can cause a material or living tissue to be destroyed.
• Poison - can injure or kill if absorbed through the skin, ingested or inhaled.
• Flammable - easily catches fire and tends to burn rapidly.
• Toxic - can cause injury or death if swallowed, inhaled, or absorbed through the skin.
• Combustible - substance which burns easily.
Most hazardous household products are grouped into four major categories:
1) Automotive (degreasers, motor oil, brake/ transmission fluid, antifreeze, batteries*, gas**, kerosene**, diesel fuel**, car wax with solvent).
2) Household cleaners (drain/oven/toilet cleaner, spot remover, silver/metal polish, furniture polish, cleanser/powder cleanser, window cleaner, bleach, liquid cleaner, dye).
3) Household maintenance (oil-based paint, auto/ model paint, paint stripper, primer, rust remover, turpentine, varnish, wood preservative, mineral spirits, and glues).
4) Yard maintenance (fertilizer, pesticides, and pet treatment products).
*Please turn in old battery to automotive store where you purchased your new battery. **The Self-Help Store does not accept fuel or fuel/oil mixtures.

Household Hazardous
About Household Hazardous Products
We use common household products everyday for housework, gardening, home improvements or car maintenance. These products may contain hazardous materials that could be harmful to us as well as contaminate the environment. Most hazardous materials found in our landfills and waterways come from common household waste.
Although the instructions and safety precautions printed on a label explain proper handling and storage procedures, rarely are disposal options provided.
It is important to properly dispose of household hazardous waste. The safest practice is to use the product as intended and ensure the containers are completely empty before throwing away. Unfortunately, many containers with a substantial amount of chemical remaining are thrown away simply because there was no alternative ……now there is.
The Household Chemical Reuse Program at Holloman serves the base populace in two ways:
1. it provides residents of Military Family
Housing (MFH) and the dorms a place to bring unused household chemicals
2. it makes these chemicals available for somebody else to use
Residents can turn in any household chemical on the list shown to the right---as long as it is in the original container---to the HAFB Household Chemical Reuse Program at the Housing Self- Help Store.
The rules for household chemical turn-in are simple:
1. the container must contain at least 1/4 of the original content,
2. and be in the original container.
If the Housing Self-Help Store is unable to accept a chemical, they will provide instructions for proper disposal or you can call the Environmental Flight at 572-3931.
