Green Purchasing
Why do we “buy green”? To reduce our dependence on foreign oil!
In a nut shell, Green Purchasing is the other side of recycling (closing the loop), that is BUYING recycled content materials. The new guidance goes further to include buying energy efficient appliances and lighting, buying USDA (agricultural) based or “bio-based” products and other conservation initiatives.
All DoD, state, and federal agencies have a Green Purchasing type of program. The USAF decided to make it efficient as well as effective. The program REQUIRES all purchases made with government money to go to Green products. Any other type of item must be documented as to why it was purchased.
This effort will bring more recycled products to your home. Refilled printer cartridges are now available at office supply stores. Most paper is 30% or more recycled content. Carpet backing is generally recycled. Virgin material in some areas is now almost impossible to find!
Green Purchasing is covered under the USAF Guide to Green Purchasing. The program formerly known as Affirmative Procurement is now consolidated under this requirement.
Tires, Batteries, & Used Oil
Tires, batteries, and automotive chemicals cannot be tossed in trash or recycle bins!
Automotive used oil can be taken to the Auto Skills center for safe recycling. Tires and batteries will be taken but expect to pay a disposal fee.
Local Auto Parts dealers often take antifreeze, batteries and tires at no charge if you are a customer.

Recycling
Holloman Housing Guide HAFBP 32-7 covers trash pick up and recycling schedules in housing. As to what to recycle and how, this is the current procedure. Please keep in mind the procedures will change as other recycling opportunities are incorporated into the contract. All the recyclables go into one container and it will be HAND SORTED.
Please follow directions on the container!
Please sort your recyclables into WHOLE BAGS of each of the following:
Paper – Place in a plastic bag (clear if possible). Separate shredded into it’s own bag. The rule is like with like. Try to keep newspaper separate from magazines and writing paper. NO paper plates, NO napkins, NO diapers – this is HAND SORTED!
Cardboard – EMPTY, FLATTENED. All cardboard is accepted. Please NO Styrofoam, NO butter sauce, NO food!
(pizza boxes are OK)
Aluminum – cans, beverage cans, sheet metal, cast aluminum, is OK.
Steel (tin) – same deal. We take it all.
Plastic- all drink bottles (1&2) are wanted, DRY, EMPTY, WITH LIDS OFF!
At this time, other plastic (3-7) should be bagged separately.
If you have unusual items, call the Recycle Center to find out if they can handle it.
Last word on RECYCLING. Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should Government Property go directly to the Recycling Contractor. Government Property MUST go to DRMO and be documented as refused before it can legally be handled by the Private Contractor.
Compost Yard
Place all yard waste (grass, leaves, garden waste) in paper sacks. Oversize sacks are available at the Housing Self Help Store.
All wood from industrial activity and tree disposal is FREE at the Compost Yard behind the Recycle Center (bld 1266).
Wood chips and compost are available for FREE to any person that wants it.
Housing Chemical Reuse & Drop Off
FREE chemicals are available to all persons with access to the Housing Self Help Store.
