About this file

This is a technical specification section (Section 230529) from a construction specification document governing hangers and supports for HVAC piping and equipment.

The specification requires strut support systems of metal rod type construction, with acceptable manufacturers including Atkore Unistrut and Cooper B-line (Eaton Electrical Sector). Specified components include continuous slotted carbon-steel channels with inturned lips, strut nuts designed to fit into channel slots, and continuous-thread hanger rods with nuts and washers made of galvanized steel. Materials must meet ASTM A 123 hot-dip galvanizing standards and ASTM A1011/A1011M for carbon steel. Threaded rods shall be zinc-plated or galvanized steel for indoor applications and stainless steel for outdoor applications, with matching nuts and washers. Structural performance requirements mandate that hangers and supports withstand gravity loads and stresses in accordance with ASCE/SEI 7, with design equipment supports capable of supporting combined operating weight plus 200 pounds minimum static design load. Installation must attach to structural steel per manufacturer's written instructions, with hangers adjusted to distribute loads equally. Excess rod length must be trimmed to ¾ inches. The specification includes eleven different types of building attachment clamps (MSS Types 19-57) for various structural applications, ranging from top-beam and side-beam clamps to specialty options for heavy loads and flexible attachments. Product data submittals are required for each product type.

SECTION 230529 - HANGERS AND SUPPORTS FOR HVAC PIPING AND EQUIPMENT

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

A. Section Includes:

1. Strut support system - metal, rod type.

1.2 ACTION SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data: For each type of product.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

A. Structural Performance: Hangers and supports for HVAC piping and equipment are to withstand the effects of gravity loads and stresses within limits and under conditions indicated in accordance with ASCE/SEI 7.

1. Design equipment supports capable of supporting combined operating weight of supported equipment and connected systems and components.

2.2 STRUT SUPPORT SYSTEMS - METAL

A. Strut Support System - Metal, Rod Type:

1. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, available manufacturers offering products that may be incorporated into the Work include, but are not limited to, the following:

a. Atkore Unistrut

b. Cooper B-line; brand of Eaton, Electrical Sector

2. Description: Factory-fabricated pipe-support assembly made of steel channels, vertical metal support rods, accessories, fittings, and other components for supporting mechanical equipment.

3. Struts: Continuous slotted carbon-steel channel with inturned lips.

4. Strut Width: Selected for applicable load criteria.

5. Strut Nuts: Formed or stamped nuts or other devices designed to fit into channel slot and, when tightened, prevent slipping along channel.

6. Hanger Rods: Continuous-thread rod, nuts, and washer made of galvanized steel.

230529 - 2

7. Metallic Coating: Hot-dip galvanized, ASTM A 123.

2.3 MATERIALS

A. Carbon Steel: ASTM A1011/A1011M.

B. Threaded Rods: Continuously threaded. Zinc-plated or galvanized steel for indoor applications and stainless steel for outdoor applications. Mating nuts and washers of similar materials as rods.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 APPLICATION

A. Strength of Support Assemblies: Where not indicated, select sizes of components so strength will be adequate to carry static loads within specified loading limits. Minimum static design load used for strength determination is to include weight of supported components plus 200 lb.

3.2 INSTALLATION OF HANGERS AND SUPPORTS

A. Attach to structural steel.

B. Strut System Installation: Metal, rod type. Install in accordance with manufacturer's written installation instructions.

C. Install hangers and supports complete with necessary attachments, inserts, bolts, rods, nuts, washers, and other accessories.

3.3 ADJUSTING

A. Hanger Adjustments: Adjust hangers to distribute loads equally on attachments.

B. Trim excess length of continuous-thread hanger and support rods to ¾ inches.

3.4 HANGER AND SUPPORT SCHEDULE
