About this file

This document is an exhibit from the Department of Public Safety & Correctional Services (DPDS) Substance Use Disorder Treatment Services (SUDTS) solicitation for Pre-Trial services (Solicitation #BPM055260). The file contains the Brief Addiction Monitor (BAM), a standardized assessment instrument designed to evaluate individuals' substance use patterns, mental health status, recovery progress, and protective factors. The BAM consists of 17 questions covering the past 30 days, addressing physical health, sleep quality, mental health symptoms, alcohol and drug use frequency, cravings, abstinence confidence, participation in self-help meetings, exposure to risk factors, family and social support, employment or volunteer activities, income adequacy, religious or spiritual support, and satisfaction with recovery goals. The assessment can be administered either through self-report or by a clinician and includes detailed scoring mechanisms that calculate Risk, Use, and Protective composite scores based on specific item groupings.

The BAM scoring methodology aggregates responses into three composite measures: Risk scores (items 1, 2, 3, 8, 11, 15), Protective scores (items 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 16), and Use scores (items 4, 5, 6), with individual drug-use items (7a-g) and recovery goal satisfaction (item 17) tracked separately outside the composite scores. The instrument was developed by Cacciola et al. and published in the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment in 2013. This BAM form serves as a clinical monitoring tool for tracking substance use disorder treatment outcomes and recovery progress among individuals in the pre-trial phase of the criminal justice system under DPDS jurisdiction.
