7.1.1 Remove the rope guard. See requirements for fabricating and installing a new rope guard in Basic Item 003.

005-2

7.1.2 Using feeler gages, measure and record propeller shaft-to-aft-bearing clearance reading at four points around the shaft; top, bottom, port and starboard. Ensure feeler gauges are of sufficient length that they extend 6 inches into the bearing. Take these readings in the presence of the ABS Surveyor, Chief Engineer and COR.

Provide a written Condition Report.

7.2 In the Auxiliary Machinery Space, measure the shaft seal overall length at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions using page 11 of Reference

2.3 as guidance. Note: this measurement must be taken prior to seal disassembly. Provide a written Condition Report.

7.3 Disassemble the shaft seal. It is essential that the running surfaces of the face and seat of the shaft seal are protected at all times. Even minor damage to these surfaces can promote leakage.

Inspect the shaft seal seat and seal face for wear. Provide a written Condition Report with recommendations if repairs are required.

7.4 Using feeler gages, measure and record propeller shaft-to-forward-bearing clearance at four points around the shaft; top, bottom, port and starboard. Ensure feeler gauges are of sufficient length that they extend 6 inches into the bearing. Take these readings in the presence of the ABS Surveyor, Chief Engineer and COR. Provide a written Condition Report.

7.5 Propeller:

7.5.1 Prior to removal of the propeller from the shaft, measure the distance from the forward end of the propeller hub to the aft end of the aft bearing housing using an inside micrometer. Take measurements in four equally spaced locations.

7.5.2 Remove the propeller from the ship using References 2.1 and 2.2 for guidance. Protect the propeller from damage throughout the yard period.

7.5.3 Clean and polish the propeller. Conduct a PT inspection of the propeller in the presence of the ABS Surveyor, Chief Engineer and COR.

7.7 DELETED

005-3

7.8 While the propulsion shaft is removed:

7.8.1 Make temporary access cuts in the skeg, cut a section of the stern tube out, and then measure and record the bore of the intermediate bearing and determine clearances using shaft journal measurement. Provide a written condition report with recommendations for any additional repairs.

7.8.2 Upon completion of inspection weld in new stern tube piece where removed with backing rings

7.8.3 Prepare to SSPC-SP 3 or the equivalent ultra high water pressure blast and coat the interior of the entire stern tube from Frame 71-84 with two each coats of epoxy primer.

7.9 In-shop Inspection of Propulsion Shaft:

7.9.2 Set the shaft up in a lathe, providing supports at each bearing surface.

7.9.3 Conduct the following inspections of the propeller shaft in the presence of the ABS Surveyor, Chief Engineer and COR.

7.9.3.1 Complete visual inspection for mechanical defects.

7.9.3.2 Measure and record bearing liner diameters. Take four measurements, equidistant apart, at each end and the middle of all bearing surfaces of the shaft.

7.9.3.3 Measure and record the run out of the shaft at the taper end, coupling end, and each bearing surface.

7.9.3.4 Measure all keys and keyways.

7.9.3.5 Conduct a liquid penetrant inspection of all surfaces of shaft liners.

7.9.3.6 Conduct a magnetic particle inspection of shaft tapers and keyways.

7.9.3.7 Inspect the existing fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) covering for pinholes, porosity, and other defects by using a high frequency spark tester. Use 250-300 volts per mil of glass reinforcement (approximately 15,000 volts for a 4-ply covering).

Pinholes will be evidenced by bright sparks as distinguished form the normal purplish corona.

005-4

7.9.3.8 Inspect the FRP covering for proper adhesion to the shaft by tapping, at regular intervals of about 18 inches along the length of the covering, with a light hammer while holding the palm of one hand against the covering on the opposite side. Discernible vibration, movement of the covering, or audible hollow sound is evidence of probable loose bond.

7.9.3.9 Provide a written Condition Report with findings, measurements, and recommendations for all the above inspections.

7.10 Replace the following components, using Reference 2.1 for part numbers and descriptions:

7.10.1 Propulsion shaft FRP covering.

7.12.3 Accomplish testing of the inflatable seal and the main seal utilizing procedures on page 22 of Reference 2.3 in the presence of the ABS Surveyor, Chief Engineer and COR.

7.13 Install SKF coupling and main shaft seal.

005-5

7.14 After verifying that the key is installed on the shaft, carefully fit the propeller to the shaft as follows:

7.14.2 Thoroughly clean the shaft and propeller hub tapers to remove all grit, grease, oil, dirt, rust, lint, and other foreign particles.

7.14.3 Apply a thin even coat of prussian blue to the shaft taper. Do not use a rag to apply the prussian blue since it may leave lint.

7.14.4 Carefully install the propeller onto the shaft taper. Push the propeller firmly and snugly onto the shaft, but not to be driven on.

7.14.5 Remove the propeller and inspect the hub taper for the bluing pattern transferred from the shaft taper. A pattern of 75 percent, evenly distributed around and over the entire hub, is required. If the contact pattern is slightly heavier over the large end of the taper, a 70-percent fit is acceptable. Note: Reference 2.1 indicates 60 percent fit. In any case, ensure the contact is evenly distributed around the circumference of the hub.

7.14.6 If an acceptable fit is not obtained, remove the propeller.

Polish the tapered surfaces as necessary to obtain an acceptable fit.

7.14.7 Repeat the above steps until an acceptable fit is obtained.

Provide the ABS Surveyor and COR an opportunity to witness the final fit bluing to verify an acceptable fit is obtained.

7.14.8 Clean the prussian blue from the tapers and return the propeller onto the shaft in the same position as when the acceptable fit was obtained. Do not apply any oil, grease, or other substance to the tapers. If an O-ring and retainer were previously installed, make sure they are inserted over the taper onto the shaft before installing the propeller.

7.15 Re-install the propeller onto the shaft in accordance with Reference 2.2 utilizing the ship’s propeller installation tools.

7.16 Re-install fairwater cap.

7.17 Blast the rope guard to bare metal and apply complete underwater coating system.
