About this file
This document is a Stack Gas Flow Analysis Report for the Motor Vessel Ranger IV, prepared by Loch Harbour Group under Contract No. 6913G623P800007. The comprehensive technical report analyzes the exhaust stack gas trajectory and plume characteristics under various wind speeds, vessel speeds, and yaw angles to ensure safe discharge of engine and diesel generator exhaust without compromising the vessel's deck areas, ventilation systems, and navigation equipment. The analysis utilized calculations based on maritime stack design methodology, examining scenarios with true wind speeds of 0, 10, 20, and 35 knots and vessel speeds ranging from 0 to 14 knots.
Key technical findings include verification that the vessel's stack, with a 20-degree downward angle, does not intersect the vessel's centerline and that exhaust plume trajectories clear topside arrangements, working decks, exterior areas, ventilation intakes, and exterior doorways. The report provides detailed graphical and numerical representations of plume trajectories for both the main engine and diesel generator set under different operational conditions, demonstrating compliance with stack design safety principles. The analysis considered factors such as exhaust gas velocity, wind conditions, vessel speed, and stack configuration to ensure optimal exhaust gas dispersion and minimal interference with vessel operations.

A. METHODOLOGY, INPUTS, ASSUMPTIONS & INTRODUCTION
Stack gas flow analysis calculations were computed in reference to the “Stack Design
Technology for Naval and Merchant Ships”, Baham and McCallum, SNAME Transactions, Volume 85, 1977, pages 324-349. The FY75 Auxiliary tanker (AO-117) stack configuration is the closest match to the Ranger IV. Hence these calculations are presented using the similar methodology used for AO-117 including the plume trajectory. Graphs are plotted for various cases including different vessel speed conditions and different yaw angles by considering various wind speeds as shown below.
Following are the inputs used in the calculations:
1. Wind velocity (0, 10, 20, 35 knots).
2. Vessel speed (0, 7, 14 knots).
3. Stack Design data in reference to the General Arrangement.
4. Caterpillar data sheet (See Appendix-C) with the exhaust temperature and flow rate for different operations conditions.
Yaw angle () and sign convention:
Yaw angle is the angle of the wind relative to the ship’s heading. Head wind is regarded as 180 deg yaw angle and tail wind is considered as 0 deg yaw angle. The below figure shows the sign convention used for the yaw angle.
Figure 1: YAW Angle and Sign Convention (VT is true wind speed)

B. BOUNDARY LAYER
Boundary Layer:
Ship’s boundary layer height was computed by using “Reference-1 & Reference-2” Stack Design Technology for Naval and Merchant Ships”, Baham and McCallum, SNAME Transactions, Volume 85, 1977, pages 324-349”. Stack height calculations were done pertinent to the design procedure described in the above-mentioned paper.
Below picture shows the RANGER – 4 vessel’s boundary layer plot, exhaust stack height and exhaust outlet pipe. The stack gases are discharged to atmosphere above the ship’s boundary layer.
Figure 2: RANGER IV’s Boundary Layer
Use or disclosure of the data contained on this sheet is subject to the restriction on the title page of this document. 9
Note: See Appendix-A for the detailed calculations.
Turbulent zone height above datum (h) = 22.23 ft
C. ASSUMPTIONS
1. The calculations are provided using stack shaped “top rectangular uptake 22.5 deg” from reference #1.
2. Analysis is carried out considering single engine operating for different load conditions according to vessel speed (14 kn, 7 kn, and At dock).
3. In the vessel Ranger IV, each engine and DG SET have separate exhaust pipe run through stack.
Use or disclosure of the data contained on this sheet is subject to the restriction on the title page of this document. 10
D. STACK CONFIGURATION
Boundary Layer Height: The deck house configuration used in the below calculations is shown below Figure 3, Figure 4. Calculations are done according to Reference 1 & Reference 2.

Use or disclosure of the data contained on this sheet is subject to the restriction on the title page of this document. 11
Figure 4: Stack Beam and Height above the Datum Dimensional Details (Aft View)
Deckhouse beam (b1) = 35.99 ft
Deckhouse beam (b2) = 32.00 ft (Average of 28’ and 36’)
Bulwark height above pilot house = 3.44 ft
Boundary layer height = Boundary layer max*Deckhouse beam
Case 1: Considering Max. Beam of Vessel
Boundary layer max = 0.42 (from test number 74, Ref .2, pg 1-24)
Boundary layer height = 0.42*35.99
= 15.12 ft
Use or disclosure of the data contained on this sheet is subject to the restriction on the title page of this document. 12
Boundary layer height after adding bulwark (H1) = 18.56 ft
Case 2: Considering Super Structure Beam of Vessel
Boundary layer max = 0.68
(from test number 9, Ref .2, pg 1-26)
Boundary layer height = 0.65*32.00
= 21.76 ft
Boundary layer height after adding bulwark (H2) = 25.20 ft
Boundary layer height (ht) = (18.56+25.20)/2
= 21.88 ft
(average value of two cases)
Stack Configuration
VW = 78.32 fps (Yaw angle 30 deg)
VS/VW = 0.23 (VS= 7kn, Engines running at max. load)
Figure 5: Influence of Stack Design on Interpenetration
Use or disclosure of the data contained on this sheet is subject to the restriction on the title page of this document. 13 h' = -0.8 (From Fig.10)
(Stack assumed as a top rectangular uptake 22.5 deg)
P = 0.5
H = 13.88/B ht = 34.44/B
From formula: h’=-(ht*(1-P)-H) = 3.42 ft
Stack Beam Required (B) = 4.28 ft
Provided Stack Beam at Datum = 6.00 ft
Exhaust Duct (pipe) Extension Above Stack
RANGER IV’s down looking angle is 22 ½ deg which is falling under the rule 2 requirements, applicable to all angles of yaw between ±30 deg. as per ref #1; the rule 2 needs to be satisfied for the value of e = 0.475 as given in Table 5 (page 336) of ref #1, for this type of vessel to determine the minimum uptake extension above stack.
Min. uptake extension above stack = e x B
= 0.475*4.02
= 1.912 ft
Where;
e = Uptake duct extension/B
B = 4.02 ft
From Figure 6 provided extension of exhaust pipe above the stack is “2.075 ft” .

Figure 7 shows the vessel stack with a down look angle of 20 deg which does not intersect the centerline of the vessel. As per the ref #1 document, Rule 1 does not apply to RANGER IV.
This means that the smoke plume passes through most of ship’s decks before penetrating the turbulent zone.
Figure 7: Down Angle of 20 deg at Stack Casing Top
Plume trajectory from stack pipe exit is shown in Figure 8 & Figure 9 for different yaw angles (0 deg, 180 deg and 270 deg) to identify that the trajectory clears the vessel’s deck i.e. topside arrangements, working deck areas, other exterior deck areas, ventilation system intakes, and exterior doorways.

G. CONCLUSION
1. The vessel stack with down look angle towards aft 20 deg does not intersect the centerline of the vessel. This means that the smoke plume passes of most ships decks before penetrating the turbulent zone.
2. Plume trajectory from the stack pipe exit is plotted for 0, 180 and 270 deg yaw angle and the results indicate that trajectory clears of the vessel’s deck i.e. topside arrangements, working deck areas, other exterior deck areas, ventilation system intakes, and exterior doorways. Note that with yaw angle 0 deg (tail wind), there may be interference of the plume path with the vessel’s navigation equipment. However, there is less likelihood, due to the location of the stack towards the port side.
3. According to the stack configuration calculations, the required stack beam width near the datum is 3.95 ft. The provided stack beam width for this vessel is 6.0 ft.
