About this file
This document is a comprehensive DI-023 Model Test Report for the Preliminary/Contract Design of Motor Vessel Ranger IV, prepared by Loch Harbour Group for a U.S. Government contract (No. 6913G623P800007). The report details comprehensive model tank tests conducted by CTO S.A., a Maritime Advanced Research Centre in Gdańsk, Poland, on a scale model (M1143) of the Ranger IV Passenger Ferry. The tests evaluated the vessel's hydrodynamic performance, including resistance characteristics, self-propulsion performance, streamline patterns, and 3D wake field measurements at two different draft conditions (9' and 8'3") and speeds ranging from 4 to 16 knots.
Key technical findings include a quasi-propulsive efficiency of around 51-53%, a small appendage resistance contribution of approximately 5% at the design speed of 14 knots, and a predicted delivered power of 1,477 kW at 9' draft and 1,207 kW at 8'3" draft. The report used stock propeller models (CP767A/CP768A) and noted that propeller efficiency falls with increasing speed. With an installed engine power of 2,082 kW at 90% MCR, the vessel is predicted to achieve speeds of 15.3 knots at 9' draft and 15.9 knots at 8'3" draft. The study also highlighted a crossflow through the hull's knuckle lines that may generate vortices and contribute to resistance.

INTRODUCTION
This technical report presents results of calm water tank tests on a model of Ranger IV Passenger Ferry
The purposes of the tests were as follows:
determination of resistance characteristics for bare and appended hull at two loading conditions;
determination of streamline pattern on the hull;
determination of self-propulsion characteristics with a stock propulsion system at two loading conditions;
determination of the nominal 3D wake field at the propeller plane.
The hull model was equipped with a stock propulsion system.
Prior to the model tests the hull was a subject of CFD analysis made by CTO (ref. to Technical Report No. RH-2023/T-058E). These analyses were made for the speed of 15 knots.
The final geometry of the hull and a part of the appendages was proposed by CTO.
The hull model is manufactured according to the requirements given in the ITTC Recommended Procedure 7.5-01-01-01: Ships Models.
The propeller models are manufactured according to the requirements given in the ITTC Recommended Procedure 7.5-01-02-02: Models Manufacture, Propeller Model Accuracy.
The methods used to carry out the tank tests and to extrapolate the results follow in general the methodology given in the relevant ITTC Recommended Procedures.
The tests are carried out in the deep water towing tank sized approx. 270 m x 12 m x 6 m in length, breadth and depth respectively. The tank is fitted out with a towing carriage of a maximum speed of 12 m/s.
The full scale resistance/propulsion predictions are given for fresh water, for the temperature of 15°C.

REVIEW AND RESULTS OF TESTS
Scope of Tests
The scope of tests comprised bare hull resistance, appended hull resistance, self-propulsion, streamline (wet paint) and 3D wake tests.
The self-propulsion tests were carried out with the use of stock propeller models CP767A and CP768A.
The resistance and self-propulsion model tests were conducted at two draughts of 2.515m and 2.743m (8’3” and 9’) and 11 speeds of 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 knots. The streamline and 3D wake tests were performed for a single draught of 9’ and a single speed of 14 knots.
Wave System
Due to a low difference between the tested draughts the wave pattern is very similar in both conditions.
Up to the speed of 8 knots the wave system is very low with only a low bow wave and a system of low oblique waves. At higher speeds the bow wave gests a sharp breaking crest. A consistent, gradual increase of the bow wave height was observed with the increasing speed.
From 13 knots on the bow wave is followed by a broad shallow through. At the aft the wave pattern is modest at the entire speed range.
At the design speed of 14 knots, the bow wave reaches approx. 7 feet (2m) above the static waterline and for the highest tested speed of 16 knots it reaches above 9 feet (2.7m).
CTO S.A. - RH RH-2024/T-003E Page 7
Resistance
The resistance tests were carried out at two loading conditions in two configurations: bare and appended. The appendages present during the tests were: shaft lines, shaft struts, bilge keels and a bow thruster tunnel with grids.
The form factor k (associated with the frictional component of resistance) was determined experimentally in conditions trimmed by the bow to eliminate the impact of the immersed transom.
The curves of the effective power for the bare and appended hull are presented in Fig. 1.

The residual resistance coefficient CR (representing mostly the wave resistance) is presented in Fig. 2.
The residuary resistance curves are consistent between draughts and the CR values are lower for the lower draught. The general trend is that the rate of increase of the coefficient rises with the rising speed, however the curves feature a hump around 13-14 knots, which most probably is caused by an unfavourable interference of the bow and stern wave systems at this Froude number (abt. 0.3).

Self-propulsion
The self-propulsion test was conducted in the speed range of 4-16 knots and two draughts of 9’ and 8’3” The tests were carried out with the use of stock controllable pitch propeller models CP767A, CP768A. Their pitch ratio was set to the value provided by the Client.
The sense of rotation was outside over the top.

The propeller efficiency curve is shown in the Fig. 3 with circles marking the values obtained in the propulsion test. It is observed that the propeller is operating relatively far from the peak of efficiency, especially at the highest speeds.

Fig. 3. Open water efficiency of CP767A/CP768A stock propellers with values obtained in self-propulsion tests
The values of the propulsive coefficients at the design speed of 14 knots are shown in the table below. A relatively low hull efficiency is observed due to a high thrust deduction factor. A significant contribution to this factor comes from the rudder geometry, which may be favourable for the maneuverability but not propulsive efficiency. Open water efficiency is at approx. 59-61% (peak efficiency of the stock propeller is 69%). In result, the quasi-propulsive efficiency is at approx. 52-53%. The results in this report refer to the propulsive arrangement with stock propellers. It can be expected that the propulsive efficiency will be higher for the final propellers. Especially, increasing the propeller diameter might have a direct positive impact on the performance, by increasing the advance ratio.

Running Trim and Sinkage
The trim and sinkage comparison plots for the two tested draughts of 9’ and 8’3” are presented in Fig 4. The results for appended resistance and propulsion tests are shown.
The results are consistent between draughts. The observed bow trim increases throughout the entire speed range. Addition of working propulsive system lowers the angle of dynamic trim slightly.

Streamlines
The streamlines (wet paint) test was performed for draught of 9’ and speed of 14 knots.
The test results show a crossflow through the knuckle lines – especially at the bow and stern. This may generate vortices and contribute to the resistance. No other irregularities of flow were detected through the test.
The flow at the skeg does not show any particular disturbances.
The results confirm the correctness of the applied inclination angle of the grids at the bow thruster tunnel.
The results of the tests were used to position the bilge keels.
Nominal wake 3D
The nominal wake test was performed for draught of 9’ and speed of 14 knots at the starboard propeller disc. The results show a relatively uniform wake distribution (Fig.38).
The most visible deceleration of the axial component occurs above the propeller hub, which is a result of the wake of the inclined shaft lines. The wake of the shaft struts is visible, but the related deceleration is not significant. The area of slightly decelerated flow to the right of the hub (in the angular range about 60-150º) most probably is caused by the bilge vortex.
The transverse components are dominated by directions upwards. They are quite significant and in the polar coordinate system associated with the propeller translate into fluctuating radial and tangential components.
The measured wake provides adequate operating conditions for properly designed propellers.
CTO S.A. - RH RH-2024/T-003E Page 13
CONCLUSIONS
The wave pattern consists mostly of a steep breaking bow wave and a broad but shallow shoulder through. The remaining part of the wave system is modest.
The contribution of the appendages to the resistance is small – ab. 5% at the design speed of 14 knots.
Propeller open water efficiency falls with increasing speed and is considerably far from the peak efficiency of the used stock propellers.
Due to a high thrust deduction factor (with a significant contribution from the rudder), the hull efficiency is relatively low.
At the speed of 14 knots the quasi-propulsive efficiency is around 51–53%.
Based on tests with a stock propulsive system the delivered power at 14 knots is predicted at 1477 kW for 9’ draught and 1207 kW for 8’3” draught. Assuming the engine power of 2082kW at 90% MCR, the achievable speed is predicted at 15.3 knots for 9’ draught and 15.9 knots for 8’3” draught.
The streamlines test reveals a crossflow through the knuckle lines – especially at the bow and stern. This may generate vortices and contribute to the resistance.
The wake pattern is quite uniform and provides adequate operating conditions for properly designed propellers.

STREAMLINES
SHIP DATATEST DATA
draught T 9’ model no. M1143 speed V 14 knots test no. 22826
The streamline (wet paint) test was performed for a single draught of T=9’ and a single speed of 14 knots. The test was focused on positioning the bilge keels and tunnel thruster grids.
The table below presents trajectories for three selected streamlines, by giving their XYZ coordinates (in mm full scale) from aft perpendicular, centreplane and baseplane respectively.
The bilge keels on the model were positioned half way between lines I and II.
