About this file
This document is a Seakeeping Performance Report for the preliminary/contract design of Motor Vessel Ranger IV, prepared by Loch Harbour Group for the U.S. Government. The report analyzes the vessel's motion and performance characteristics using strip theory method, examining roll, pitch, vertical and lateral accelerations, and Motion Sickness Index (MSI) under various Lake Superior sea conditions at different speeds and loading conditions.
The analysis covers sea states 3 through 7, with two critical loading conditions: a departure operating condition with a Vertical Center of Gravity (VCG) of 15.381 ft and an arrival operating condition with a VCG of 16.931 ft. The study concludes that the Ranger IV design offers a high Operability Index across all examined sea states, generally complying with vessel operation standards. Key observations include maximum roll motion occurring between beam and following waves, potential need for bilge keel height adjustments, and a recommendation to adjust heading angles during long voyages to ensure passenger comfort and minimize seasickness.

SUBMISSION SUMMARY
This report contains an overview of seakeeping analysis, including roll motions, pitch motions, vertical and lateral acceleration, and motion sickness index (MSI). Lake Superior Sea conditions were analyzed and defined as per historical data over the last 5 years. Seakeeping analysis has been carried out using Maxsurf software based on strip theory. Two critical loading conditions are taken into consideration at defined speed and heading angles. The effect of different heading angles and sea conditions on the seakeeping performance of the RANGER IV were analyzed.
The results demonstrate the RANGER IV’s seakeeping performance meets the demand of residential comfort. In addition, the dangerous navigation heading angles are also listed, to improve vessel and operator safety.

Background/overview of vessel’s seakeeping characteristics and sea conditions.
Discussion of the methodology used for the analysis.
Analysis of the vessel’s operability limiting criteria.
Summary of the vessel’s seakeeping performance.
The LHG team recognizes all requirements presented by the government in the Data Item Description under Contract No. 6913G623P800007 - Statement of Work and Basis of Design.
B. BACKGROUND
Seakeeping characteristics of the RANGER IV were analyzed at Sea States 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. Wave heights and modal periods for each sea state are in accordance with ITTC (2 Param. Pierson Moskowitz\ Bretschneider) and Lake Superior historical wave data. Due to the unique wave profiles of Lake Superior, TAI developed the sea states spectrum based on historical data from NOAA buoys 45006,45001, and 45180 located in Lake Superior along the transit routes.
Table 1 below summarizes the bouy data recording the sea states based on average wind speed, wave height and percentage of time that sea state is most likely to occur over the last 5 years. In
Use or disclosure of the data contained on this sheet is subject to the restriction on the title page of this document. 8 order to review a realistic operational profile and worst-case scenario, sea states 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 were chosen to be analyzed.

Considering the navigation area of the vessel, the typical sea conditions in Lake Superior were acquired from Table 1 to calculate the motion response of the vessel at the defined speeds. The ITTC two-parameter wave spectrum is selected for calculation, and sea state parameters are shown in Table 2.

To assess the effect of seakeeping performance on the mission capability of the vessel, the mission requirements need to be translated into seakeeping performance requirements. However, there is no distinct universal set of criteria for seakeeping performance. The criteria can vary vastly from ship to ship depending on the missions of the ship. The RANGER IV’s operability limits are defined in Table 3. These limits were determined by considering USCG operability limiting criteria as well as expected operational environment and mission of the vessel.
Use or disclosure of the data contained on this sheet is subject to the restriction on the title page of this document. 9
Table 3: Operability Limiting Criteria for the RANGER IV
SHIP TRANSIT MOTION CRITERIA (all limit values RMS) Response Location Limit Roll - 8.0 deg Pitch - 3.0 deg Vertical Acceleration Pilot House 0.2g Lateral Acceleration Pilot House 0.2g Motion Sickness Incidence (Best 60°) Pilot House <15% for 2 Hours
The seakeeping criteria included limits to roll motion, pitch motion, vertical and lateral acceleration. The purpose of imposing restrictive criteria on the behavior of ships when operating at sea is to avoid the occurrence of sea sickness on crew and/or passengers as well as maintain the securement of equipment and cargo. Motion sickness incidence index (MSI) is the percentage of subjects who experience sea sickness in the specified time that subjects are exposed to the motions.
It was assumed that the MSI criterion will be evaluated for the best 60-degree range of vessel heading, the most critical location, the pilot house, and for 2 hours of exposure.
C. METHODOLOGY
Using Maxsurf Motions software, a virtual model of the RANGER IV was developed and analyzed to predict seakeeping behavior considering the wave spectrum.
Maxsurf motions software provides two analysis methods which are strip theory method and panel method to perform motion analysis. The Strip theory method provides fast calculation of heave, pitch, and roll response for hull shapes with L/B (length-beam ratio) greater than 4. The panel method can be used for any vessel shape and provides a full six degrees of freedom response calculations. The linear strip theory method is based on the work of Salvesen et al, and it is used to calculate the coupled heave and pitch response of the vessel. The roll response is calculated using linear roll damping theory.
The panel method is a first-order diffraction/radiation hydrodynamic analysis in which a constant panel-based boundary element method (BEM) is used. The panel method generates its analysis elements based on the MAXSURF NURBS surface model. The panel method generates Response Amplitude Operators (RAOs) for all six degrees of freedom: surge, sway, heave, roll, pitch and yaw. The panel method is valid for a very large range of geometry but is restricted to zero forward speed. Since motions should be examined at different operating speeds, usage of panel method is not convenient for RANGER IV seakeeping analysis. To decide implementation of strip theory method L/B ratio is calculated as per parameters of the RANGER IV are listed in Table 4. The L / B is 5.06, which meets the calculation conditions of strip theory.

The Ranger IV has different loading conditions described in Basis of Design and DI-019 Intact and Damage Stability Report. In accordance with the DRL requirements, the analysis was performed to examine the seakeeping behavior of the vessel when operating under loading conditions that have the highest and lowest VCG, corresponding to the lowest and highest GMT respectively. Two extreme metacentric heights are considered as metacentric height is critical with respect to the pitch and roll motions. Highest VCG was found to be 16.931 ft for arrival operating loading condition denoted as condition KCC-(LLC) which is described as “Light Load Condition @ Keweenaw Canal Cruises.” The lowest VCG was found to be 15.381 ft for departure operating loading condition denoted as LST-(FLC) which is described as “Full Load Condition at Late Season Transport without Ice Load.”. Examined loading conditions are given in Table 5. For a comprehensive breakdown of loading conditions and hydrostatic characteristics refer to DI-019.

The number of strips is in the range of 1/3 to 2/3 of the ship length value. After the model is built and all parameters are set, the resulting striped ship is shown as an example in Figure 1 for departure operating condition. A similar image will be for arrival operating condition at load draft.

The basic idea of the strip theory is dividing the hull into several slices along the longitudinal direction as shown in Figure 1. Under given loading conditions and speed conditions, for any combination of wave frequency and wave direction, the hydrodynamic coefficients such as additional mass, additional damping, Froude-Krylov wave force and diffraction wave force was calculated on each slice by applying a unit amplitude regular wave to the hull. Finally, the force of each slice is integrated longitudinally to obtain the force of the entire hull.
Seakeeping analysis was performed using strip theory method to evaluate the motion and response of the RANGER IV in range of sea states at defined headings (0-360 degree) and speeds (0-14 knots). Locations were defined as shown in figure 2, accelerations and MSI results were considered for Pilot house location.

H. CONCLUSION
Based on strip theory method, this report analyzes the roll, pitch, vertical and lateral accelerations and MSI under Lake Superior’s sea conditions at defined speed and loading conditions. In this report has been carried out a seakeeping performance check for the worst case that may occur under various sea conditions. Summary of maximum motion values are provided below tables as per sea states.

The Ranger IV design offers a high Operability Index (OPI) in sea state 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. The motion response of the vessel generally complies with the vessel operation standards.
The maximum roll motion happens in intervals between the beam waves and the following waves (60 °) while the roll motion is better under other wave directions. At sea state 5, 6 and 7, there is a decrease in OPI for roll motion, which will require further analysis based on bilge keels effects if deemed an obstacle to operational use.
To improve the roll stability of the vessel, the bilge keel height can be increased, however increasing the height too far would decrease maneuverability as well as compromise the vessel’s overall safety. Further analysis will be required to determine if bilge keel height can be increased or not.
Maximum pitch motion happens in the between 0°-30° as well as the value meets the criteria.
The RMS of vertical acceleration in bridge reaches the highest when the heading angle is around 180 °. Although the value meets the criteria, efforts should be made to avoid this condition to ensure the normal working of machines.
When sailing in head seas for up to two hours or more at sea state 6 and sea state 7, the vessel is prone to seasickness. However, when analyzing MSI index, location was considered Pilot House which is the worst-case scenario. It can be expected passenger areas will have less MSI.
Overall, the heading angle should be appropriately adjusted during long voyages to ensure passenger comfort. The Ranger IV has the ability to remain at sea in all conditions and carry out its specified duty.
