This facility provides depot-level repair and maintenance capability supporting ISS processing activities and flight hardware. Provides modification, fabrication, repair, and chemical laboratories and engineering services.

Launch Equipment Shop (LES) K6-1247

The Launch Equipment Shop is a 41,000 square foot facility that includes a number of technical shops which have the capability to provide a wide range of technical skills and equipment for the fabrication, modification, refurbishment, maintenance and repair of systems and ground support equipment (GSE). This is done through the use of machinists, welders, electrical cable technicians and sheet metal fabricators.

LES-Pneumatic Shop K6-1346 The LES capability is augmented by a pneumatics service that provides fabrication and bending of high pressure pneumatic lines and hoses

Proofload Shop K6-1995 Proofload Shop provides wire rope fabrication, inspection, maintenance and repairs and in-shop proofloading and load testing of lifting and handling hardware.

The equipment includes mobile cranes, forklifts, pallet jacks, several specialized types of trucks, trailers and specialized vehicles. It also includes, lift and work platforms, excavation, earthwork and demolition equipment, marine and aircraft servicing equipment, tools and miscellaneous assets such as air compressors, light banks, fuel tanks and mobile pumps.

High Crew Operations Shop K6-2045 This shop provides temporary access including scaffolding, floats, and PIC boards, and means for fall protection for working at heights.

Precision Measurement/Alignment Lab K6-0848 Rm 1M12

This facility contains the equipment to provide KSC's in-house mobile measurement and alignment group that performs independent verification of quality, alignment, fit and finish and dimensional analyses of anomalies. The group uses off-the-shelf optical instrumentation to perform 3-dimensional measurements, modeling, reverse engineering and quality assurance on spacecraft, spacecraft components, avionics packages, payloads, GSE and NASA facilities to metrology standards.

Some example work include Solid Rocket Booster hold-down bolt precision alignment during installation, inertial measurement unit installations and calibrations, precision measurement of large scale spacecraft component mating surfaces, measurement of scratches on sealing surfaces.

The EHSC "machine shop" is a small but well-equipped fabrication facility that supports a variety of labs and projects including the FAT Capability, Cable Shop, and LETF overflow work along with many other research and development projects that require quick turn-around. It monitors and records temperature, pressure, flow rate, acoustic, strain, environmental and special measurements. The SDAS is specifically designed to support high-speed engineering data gathering as well as local and remote display and data storage. The SDAS capability performs evaluations of data acquisition equipment and cables in various configurations to support this subsystem.

Hazard and Gas Detection Capability (HGDC)

BIOLOGICAL HAZARD,

BIO-HAZARD

Biological substances that pose a threat to the health of living organisms, primarily that of humans. This can include medical waste or samples of a microorganism, virus or toxin (from a biological source) that can impact human health. The term and its associated symbol used as a warning so those potentially exposed to the substance will know to take precautions.

BIO-SAFETY LEVEL The United States' Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) categorizes various diseases in levels of biohazard, Level 1 being minimum risk and Level 4 being extreme risk. Laboratories and other facilities are categorized as BSL (Bio-safety Level) 1-4.

CAPITALIZED PROPERTY

CONTRACTOR-LED Any operation or activity where the Contractor performs as 'task leader' or ‘lead designer’ and a significant portion of the work, including design or procedure development, is performed by Contract personnel. The contractor is responsible for integrating, coordinating, and directing team members in the accomplishment of a task.

CONTROLLED UNCLASSIFIED

INFORMATION

Sensitive information that requires protection under laws, regulations and Government-wide policies (LRGWP). Further defined in NID 2810.135

CONVENTIONAL ANALYSES Engineering analyses that are less specialized than unconventional analyses, including, but not limited to, sneak circuit analyses, electrical load analyses, arc flash analyses, American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) structural code analyses, finite element analyses, single-phase fluid system analyses, vibration response analyses, logistics analyses, reliability analyses, and thermal analyses.

CRITICAL The categorization based on the worst-case potential effect of failure (loss of function or inadvertent operation), that could result in loss of life, loss of vehicle, or damage to a vehicle system.

CRITICAL ITEM Any article or material which if defective can cause loss of life, loss of vehicle, or result in a hazardous or unsafe condition or make a system non-functional.

CRITICAL ITEMS LIST A listing comprised of critical items identified as a result of performing the Failure Modes and Effects Analysis.

CRITICAL SKILLS A specific ability that is required for the safe execution or performance of a unique task, requiring specialized training and certification.

DAMAGE ASSESSMENT and

A team of personnel to replace the Ride-Out Team and continue the recovery effort after a man-made or natural disaster. The team performs tasks necessary to restore the infrastructure, perform damage assessment, sustain the recovery effort, and safe hazardous situations.

DATA DELIVERY IN-PLACE An IT-specific term referring to the capability to provide access to data in the contractor's native system(s). It does not refer to data specifically identified as a contract deliverable in the PWS, including those items identified in Appendix 1.

DECOMPOSE (Requirements) The process of determining lower level requirements based on given higher-level requirements, constraints, and consideration of other issues.

DEMILITARIZATION/ DEMIL The act of eliminating the functional capabilities and inherent military design features from Government personal property. Methods and degree range from removal and destruction of critical features to total destruction by cutting, crushing, shredding, melting, burning, etc.

DEMIL is required to prevent property from being used for its originally intended purpose and to prevent the release of inherent design information that could be used against the United States. DEMIL applies to material in both serviceable and unserviceable condition.

MAINTENANCE

Includes the repair, fabrication, manufacture, rebuilding, assembly overhaul, modification, refurbishment, rebuilding, test, analysis, repair-process design, in-service engineering, upgrade, painting and disposal of parts, assemblies, subassemblies, software, components, or end items that require shop facilities, tooling, support equipment, and/or personnel of higher technical skills, or processes beyond the organizational level capability.

DESTOW To remove PEPC/FCE, Utilization experiments or ISS hardware from spacecraft.

DEVELOPMENT OR

SUSTAINING PROJECT

A subsystem or system level engineering design project. Projects could be initiated based on new or modified requirements; for operability, obsolescence, or service life issues; to resolve issues with safety, support problem resolution or improve performance;

incorporate vendor product updates or notes. A development or sustaining project can be contractor-led or involve providing support to a NASA-managed contract.

DISPOSAL The process of eliminating a project’s assets.

DOCUMENT CENTER A location to provide onsite access for drawings and technical documentation in electronic and hard copy formats.

DOCUMENT RELEASE

AUTHORIZATION

A process to release engineering documentation into a central repository.

DOCUMENTED The condition of being recorded in written or electronic form.

DOCUMENTATION Information and its supporting medium; e.g., records, specifications, drawings, reports, standards and work documents. The medium may be paper, photography, digital files, optical discs, magnetic, electronic storage or a combination.

e533 FLAT FILE A format specific machine-readable electronic file of NASA Form 533 reportable data (See DRDs 1-2.1 and 1-2.2).

ELECTRONIC INFORMATION Any data and information, except for limited-rights data or restricted software that is processed, managed, accessed or stored on an IT system in the performance of the contract.

ENGINEERING SERVICES Discipline-based services provided as necessary to execute a development or sustaining project, including but not limited to, project management, systems engineering and integration, design engineering, analysis, field supervision and inspection.

ENGINEERING STUDIES Investigations performed and associated reports to determine design decisions and/or support project planning. Examples include, but are not limited to, feasibility and trade studies, field investigations, environmental studies, existing-conditions studies, analysis of future requirements, conceptual project design studies and energy conservation studies.

EQUIPMENT A tangible asset that is functionally complete for its intended purpose, durable, nonexpendable. Equipment is not intended for sale and does not ordinarily lose its identity or become a component part of another article when put into use.

EXCESS A classification assigned to government property for which there is no requirement for future use. Also, a process for property disposal.

EXPENDABLES Property that may be consumed in use or loses its identity in use and may be dropped from stock record accounts when it is issued or used.

EXPERIMENT/SCIENCE

PAYLOAD

A collection of equipment (hardware, software, specimens, etc.) and associated processes that are used to achieve specific scientific, technological, or commercial objectives. The scientific research and development components being flown on a mission, within or on a payload.

EXPRESS LOGISTICS CARRIER An external platform attached to the ISS which is utilized to warehouse ISS spares and external payloads. The external payloads mounted on the ELC are active.

FACILITY-BASED SYSTEMS Built-in equipment and large substantially affixed equipment normally acquired and installed as part of a facility project. Typically includes equipment or systems required to make a facility useful and operable.

The removal of such equipment would impair the usefulness, safety, or environment of the facility and would involve substantial cost because of the special or unique services required for the initial installation.

Examples of COMET facility-based systems include VAB 325-ton bridge crane, launch pad main flame deflector and VAB and SSPF high-bay powered doors.

FAILURE ANALYSIS The effort of physical inspections, test (destructive or nondestructive), and/or analytical processes required to determine the failure modes and causes.

The analysis of the potential failure modes in a system to determine effects on system operation, personnel safety, and flight hardware; and to classify each failure mode according to severity.
