1.3 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

Design and provide automatic wet pipe fire extinguishing sprinkler systems for complete fire protection coverage throughout the entire building with the exception of areas indicated to have dry-type system coverage. The existing sprinkler entrance is to remain. Remove the remainder of the existing sprinkler system.

1.4 INTERRUPTION OF SPRINKLER SERVICE

Do not interrupt sprinkler service to building unless permitted under the following conditions:

a. Notify the Contracting Officer no fewer than 14 days in advance of proposed interruption of sprinkler service.

b. Do not proceed with interruption of sprinkler service without

SECTION 21 13 13.00 20 Page 2

Contracting Officer's written permission.

c. The impairment shall comply with UFC 3-601-02 , NFPA 241 , EM 385-1-1 , and the installation's fire regulations.

d. Impairments shall include a dedicated 24/7 fire watch. Contractors doing other work are not permitted to serve as the fire watch personnel.

1.5 FIRE PROTECTION DURING CONSTRUCTION

Fire protection during construction shall follow EM 385-1-1, NFPA 241, and the installation's fire regulations.

1.6 SPRINKLER SYSTEM DESIGN

Except as modified herein, design, provide, and install automatic wet pipe fire extinguishing sprinkler systems in accordance with the required and advisory provisions of NFPA 13 , UFC 3-600-01 , and UFC 3-490-06 including recommendations and advisory portions, which shall be considered mandatory; this includes advisory provisions listed in the appendices of such standard(s), as though the word "shall" had been substituted for the word "should" wherever it appears. Design system by hydraulic calculations for uniform distribution of water over the design area. Hydraulic calculations shall include an 8 psi pressure loss for the backflow preventer assembly or the tested frinction loss; whichever is greater.

Locate sprinklers and sprinkler piping in a consistent pattern with ceiling grid, lights, and air supply diffusers. Provide sprinklers and piping system layout. Devices and equipment for fire protection service shall be UL Fire Prot Dir listed or FM APP GUIDE approved for use in wet pipe sprinkler systems.

1.6.1 Location of Sprinklers

Sprinklers in relation to the ceiling and the spacing of sprinklers shall not exceed that permitted by NFPA 13 for the hazards indicated on the contract drawings. Uniformly space sprinklers on the branch piping.

Sprinklers shall provide coverage throughout 100 percent of the building.

This includes, but is not limited to, telephone rooms, combustible concealed spaces where required by NFPA 13, above ceiling clouds where required by NFPA 13, electrical equipment rooms, boiler rooms, switchgear rooms, and other electrical and mechanical spaces.

1.6.2 Water Distribution

Distribution shall be uniform throughout the area in which the sprinklers will open. Discharge from individual sprinklers in hydraulically most remote area shall be between 100 percent and 120 percent of the specified density.

1.6.3 Density of Application of Water

Size pipe to provide the specified density when the system is discharging the specified total maximum required flow. Application to horizontal surfaces below the sprinklers shall be as outline below from UFC 3-600-01 for the hazard levels indicated on the contract drawings.

a. 0.10 gpm/SF for Light Hazard Category

b. 0.20 gpm/SF for Ordinary Hazard Category

SECTION 21 13 13.00 20 Page 3

1.6.4 Sprinkler Discharge Area

Area shall be the hydraulically most remote operating areas sized as outlined below from UFC 3-600-01 for the hazard levels indicated on the contract drawings. Area reductions and increases from NFPA 13 shall not be applied to this area unless specifically permitted or required by UFC 3-600-01 . Increases, such as for heights and sloped ceiling/decking above, shall be added to these areas as applicable, and are not included in the square footage shown below. Refer to architectural contract drawings for heights and slopes.

a. 1,500 SF for Light Hazard Category

b. 2,500 SF for Ordinary Hazard Category

1.6.5 Outside Hose Allowances

Hydraulic calculations shall include a hose allowance for outside hose streams as outlined below from UFC 3-600-01 for the hazard levels indicated on the contract drawings plus 50 gpm for domestic demand.

a. 250 gpm for Light Hazard Category

b. 250 gpm for Ordinary Hazard Category

1.6.6 Water Supply

Perform a hydrant flow test for the basis of sprinkler design. If the Government does not confirm the test was performed with the water tower in the "Winter Mode", which includes a lower water level within the water tower, include a 5 psi pressure loss to account for this. The calculations shall be based on the worst result between the results of this hydrant flow test performed by the Contractor, and the water supply data shown on the fire protection contract drawings. The hydrant flow tests shall be performed in accordance with NFPA 291 and UFC 3-600-01 . Multiple hydrants shall be opened as needed to produce either a 25-percent pressure drop or at least the calculated fire protection water demand in accordance with NFPA 291 . A minimum of two hydrants shall be flowed. Do not utilize the pumper outlet or two outlets from the same hydrant for flow testing. Refer to Contract drawings for information on water supply. Additional information on pipe sizing and layout beyond what is shown can be provided upon request. Provide a 10 percent cushion (with a minimum of 5 psi) between total calculated demand and water supply. Submit the Hydrant Flow Test Results to the Government.

1.6.7 Basis of Calculations

Hydraulic calculations shall be based upon the Hazen-Williams formula with a "C" value of 120 for steel piping and 100 for existing underground piping.
