GEOLOGIC OVERVIEW
The Gettysburg NMP Road Rehabilitation project site lies within the Gettysburg-Newark Lowland Section of the Piedmont Physiographic Province of Pennsylvania. Specifically, the site is located in the Gettysburg Basin, a fault bounded basin, or graben (dropped block), that is one of a series of rift basins that comprise the Newark Supergroup rocks. Regionally, the various basins of the Newark Supegroup run from northeast to southwest, parallel with the eastern edge of the Appalachian Mountains, and are the result of tectonic activity associated with the break-up (rifting) of the super-continent of Pangaea during the Triassic and Early Jurassic Geologic Periods. Over time, the Gettysburg Basin filled with lacustrine (lake bed) and alluvial fan deposits, a result of the erosion of the Appalachian Mountains to the west. Subsequent erosion of these deposits exposed a sequence of non-durable siltstones and shales in the central portion of the basin and conglomerates and sandstones along the margins. These sedimentary deposits were periodically intruded by igneous magma forming sills and dikes of diabase. Surrounding these intrusions are zones of contact metamorphism, or aureoles, where the heat and pressure from the intruding igneous body recrystallized the host material into more durable rock types (e.g. quartzite, metasiltstone, greywacke, etc.), usually referred to as hornfels. In general, the hornfels are more durable than their parent material. The final episode of igneous activity occurred during the Early Jurassic Period, when flows of basalt were extruded onto the surface. Thermally altered rocks are also associated with the basalt flows, but are not as extensive as the intrusion associated hornfels.
The project concerns the planned rehabilitation of four individual road segments within the environs of Gettysburg NMP, specifically:
1. Route 200 (US Cavalry Avenue also known as E. Cavalry Avenue)
2. Route 201 (Confederate Cavalry Avenue/Gregg Avenue)
3. Route 15 (North Sickles Avenue)
4. Route 12 (South Confederate-Sykes Avenue)
Route 200, Route 201, and Route 15, and the westernmost 1,200-feet of Route 12, are mapped as entirely underlain by the Gettysburg Formation, a sedimentary unit consisting of reddish-brown to maroon silty mudstone and shale, with thin strata of interbedded sandstone and several thin beds of impure limestone. The Gettysburg Formation is dated to the Triassic Geologic Period. The majority of Route 12 is mapped as diabase bedrock dating from the early Jurassic Geologic Period. Observations of surface bedrock exposures compared favorably with the mapped geology as consisting of gray or light buff, medium to coarse-grained diabase bedrock.
The diabase in the location is a large sheet that extends across Adams County from northeast to southwest. The diabase is resistant to erosion, and forms the chain of small hills at the Gettysburg battlefield including Cemetery Ridge, Culps Hill, and the Round Tops.
The soils underlying Route 200, Route 201, and Route 15, and the western 1,200-feet of Route 12 are mapped as colluvium and residuum derived from Triassic shale. These soils tend to range
Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania March 31, 2020 ■ Terracon Project No. JD195236
Responsive ■ Resourceful ■ Reliable from 40 to 60-inches to hard, lithic bedrock, and are often contain abundant rock fragments (“channers”). Over half of the soils types in these areas have seasonal high-water tables (November – March) ranging from less than5-inches to 20-inches below the surface. One of the soils (the Croton silt loam) is prone to ponding during periods of water table elevation and/or heavy precipitation. In contrast, the majority of Route 12 is mapped as underlain by soils derived from the chemical and physical weathering of diabase or other dark-colored igneous rocks and averaging 5-feet in depth. Several of these soils can have shallow water tables averaging less than 2-feet below the surface year round, with seasonal high water tables at or near the surface.
The General Comments section provides an understanding of the report limitations.
GROUNDWATER
Groundwater level observations were made in the field during drilling of the 15 DCP tests. The holes were 4.75 inches to 55 inches in depth or auger refusal as measured from the top of asphalt.
Groundwater was not encountered in the holes at the time of our exploration.
The groundwater observations presented herein are considered to be an indication of the groundwater levels at the dates and times indicated. Where more impervious silt and clay soils are encountered, the amount of water seepage into the borings is limited, and it is generally not possible to establish the location of the groundwater table through short term water level observations. Also, fluctuations in groundwater levels should be expected with seasons of the year, construction activity, changes to surface grades, precipitation, or other similar factors.
PAVEMENT
A total of 24 asphalt pavement cores were obtained from each borehole. Below are the ranges of the thicknesses of the pavement and subbase when encountered.
■ Route 200 – Asphalt thickness ranged from 4.75 to 6.25 inches or auger refusal; Subbase thickness ranged from 0 to 4.0 inches.
■ Route 201 – Asphalt thickness ranged from 5.25 to 7.0 inches or auger refusal; Subbase thickness ranged from 0 to 18.0 inches.
■ Route 15 – Asphalt thickness ranged from 6.5 to 7.5 inches or auger refusal; Subbase was not encountered.
■ Route 12 – Asphalt thickness ranged from 5.25 to 9.0 inches or auger refusal; the park did not want the subbase material to be disturbed; therefore the subbase material was not measured.
The asphalt core pictures are in in the Exploration Results section.

Kessler DCP blowcounts were utilized to estimate an average California Bearing Ratio (CBR) within 30-inch below subgrade when no refusal encountered. There were seven locations (B- 03, B-04, B-5, B-07, B-08, B-14, and B-15) where the DCP encountered refusal and was not able to be advanced into the subgrade. DCP results and estimated average CBR values are provided in the Exploration Results section.

Boring Layout and Elevations: Unless otherwise noted, Terracon personnel provided the boring layout. Coordinates were obtained with a handheld GPS unit (estimated horizontal accuracy of about ±10 feet) and approximate elevations were obtained by interpolation from Google Earth. If elevations and a more precise boring layout are desired, we recommend borings be surveyed following completion of fieldwork.
Subsurface Exploration Procedures: The Kessler Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) sampling procedure, a standard 5/8-inch diameter rod was driven into the ground by a 17.6-pound hammer falling a distance of 22.6 inches. The number of blows required to advance the 0.79 inch cone every 2 inches (50 millimeters) is recorded. The DCP values, are indicated on the DCP Test Data logs at the test depths. We observed and recorded groundwater levels during drilling and sampling. For safety purposes, all borings were backfilled with auger cuttings after their completion. Pavements were patched with Aquaphalt and/or pre-mixed concrete, as appropriate.
The sampling depths, penetration distances, and other sampling information was recorded on the DCP test data logs. The samples were placed in appropriate containers and taken to our soil laboratory for testing and classification by a Geotechnical Engineer. Our exploration team prepared field logs as part of the drilling operations. These field logs included visual classifications of the materials encountered during drilling and our interpretation of the subsurface conditions between samples. Final DCP logs were prepared from the field logs. The final DCP logs represent the Geotechnical Engineer's interpretation of the field logs and include modifications based on observations and tests of the samples in our laboratory.
Laboratory Testing
The project engineer reviewed the field data and assigned laboratory tests to understand the engineering properties of the various soil strata, as necessary, for this project. Procedural standards noted below are for reference to methodology in general. In some cases, variations to methods were applied because of local practice or professional judgment. Standards noted below include reference to other, related standards. Such references are not necessarily applicable to describe the specific test performed.
