1 PROJECT BACKGROUND
1.1 INTRODUCTION
The National Park Service (NPS) is proposing site improvements at the Little Round Top Visitor Use area at Gettysburg National Military Park. The project site encompasses approximately 16 acres and is located in the Borough of Gettysburg in Adams County, Pennsylvania. This project is to rehabilitate the cultural and natural landscapes of the area while improving accessibility, pedestrian safety and pedestrian circulation, protecting natural landscape, and improving traffic control and parking. A primary goal of the project is the elimination of safety concerns and natural resource damage within the project area.
The project proposes new roadwork, car and bus parking, new trails and pathways, as well as, improvements to existing pathways and pedestrian gathering areas. Other site features proposed include walls to minimize areas of grading. Site grading, erosion control and drainage improvements are part of the project.
Little Round Top is considered the key point in the American Civil War. On July 2nd 1863, the 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment of the Union Army’s defensive line fought the most famous engagement on Little Round Top, culminating in a dramatic downhill bayonet charge that is one of the most well-known actions at Gettysburg and in the American Civil War.

2 DRAINAGE CALCULATIONS DESIGN
2.1 RUNOFF CALCULATIONS
Runoff calculations to calculation flow rates in support of the drainage system design were performed using the Rational Method, Q = ciA, in accordance with Chapter 5 of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Erosion and Sediment Pollution Control Manual (The Manual), dated March 2012. Where “Q” is flow rate in cubic feet per second, “c” is the weighted runoff coefficient, “i” is rainfall intensity in inches per hour, and “A” is the drainage area in acres. The weighted runoff coefficient is calculated using 0.95, 0.6 and 0.3 for impervious, compacted earth and wooded covered areas, respectively. In accordance with The Manual, the 10-year design storm was utilized, and rainfall intensities determined.
2.2 SWALE DESIGN CALCULATIONS
Swale design calculations are presented in Appendix A. Calculations are performed in accordance with The Manual utilizing Worksheet #11. Swales are designed with erosion control blanket (ECB) to prevent erosion and sized for the 10-year design storm.
2.3 STORM DRAIN DESIGN CALCULATIONS
Storm drain design calculations are presented in Appendix B. Calculations are performed using Manning’s equation to determine pipe capacity. Consistent with The Manual, the storm drains are sized for the 10-year design storm.
2.4 CURB OPENING DESIGN CALCULATIONS
Curb opening design calculations are presented in Appendix C. The calculations are designed considering depth of flow and gutter spread along the road. The curbs openings are design for the 10-year design storm and rainfall intensity for these calculations are from NOAA Atlas 14.
2.5 RIPRAP APRON DESIGN CALCULATIONS
Riprap aprons for each of the outfalls are designed in accordance with The Manual and presented in Appendix D. The have been calculated based on the 10-year peak design flow at each outfall. Stone class size selected is based on The Manual’s riprap gradation.

NOTES:
1. Use 1.6 for Temporary Channels; 2.25 for Temporary Channels in Special Protection (HQ or EV) Watersheds; 2.75 for
Permanent Channels. For Rational Method, enter “N/A” and attach E&S Worksheets 9 and 10. For TR-55 enter “N/A” and attach appropriate Worksheets.
2. Adjust “n” value for changes in channel liner and flow depth. For vegetated channels, provide data for manufactured linings without vegetation and with vegetation in separate columns.
3. Slopes may not be averaged.
4. Minimum Freeboard is 0.5 ft. or ¼ Total Channel Depth, whichever is greater
5. Permissible velocity lining design method is not acceptable for channels with a bed slope of 10% or greater. Shear stress lining design method is required for channels with a bed slope of 10% or greater. Shear stress lining design method may be used for any channel bed slope.

For trapezoidal channels with up to 10’ bottom width, Table 6.3 may be used to determine the “n” value. When rock riprap is proposed, use Figure 6.2 to determine the "n" value.
The seed mixture used in vegetative channels should be suitable for the anticipated flow conditions based on the channel location and type of soil(s) encountered. The Department recommends the use of Tables 11.3, 11.4, and 11.5 taken from the Penn State Publication, Erosion Control and Conservation Plantings on Noncropland, for selection of species to be used.

1 Precipitation frequency (PF) estimates in this table are based on frequency analysis of partial duration series (PDS).
Numbers in parenthesis are PF estimates at lower and upper bounds of the 90% confidence interval. The probability that precipitation frequency estimates (for a given duration and average recurrence interval) will be greater than the upper bound (or less than the lower bound) is 5%. Estimates at upper bounds are not checked against probable maximum precipitation (PMP) estimates and may be higher than currently valid PMP values.
Please refer to NOAA Atlas 14 document for more information.
