About this file

This is a technical specification document for a Low Self-Discharge Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) battery pack produced for the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS/BPH), Library of Congress, for use in Digital Talking Book Machines (DTBM).

The specification establishes comprehensive design and performance requirements for a 7.2-volt battery pack comprising six matched AA-size NiMH cells with a nominal capacity of 2,000 mAh ± 2.5%. The battery pack must weigh no more than 200 grams and meet maximum dimensions of 88mm width, 54mm height, and 15.5mm depth. Each cell must be individually insulated with polyvinyl chloride heat shrink tubing and include a re-sealable safety vent. The battery pack must incorporate specific components including a self-resetting positive temperature coefficient fuse (Bourns P/N MF-S350 or equivalent), a precision thermistor (Semitec P/N 104AT-2 or equivalent), and a thermal switch (ACCU THERM P/N AT100PN 70C27L or equivalent). The cable harness must use 22AWG 7x30 stranded wire with a JST PAP-04V-S connector. Critical performance requirements include operating temperatures of 0–50°C during discharge and 10–35°C during charging, storage capacity retention exceeding 80% after 24 months at room temperature, self-discharge performance meeting specified curves over five years at 0°C, 25°C, and 40°C, cycle life of at least 80% capacity retention after 500 cycles, and internal impedance not exceeding 300 mΩ. The battery pack must pass vibration testing, pull testing (20-pound force resistance), drop testing from 50cm height, and comply with UL 2054 standards including short-circuit, abnormal charging, abusive overcharge, and forced-discharge tests. Packaging requirements specify individual battery packs in shipping cartons holding 10 units, with cartons packed into master overpack boxes holding 6 cartons, all meeting United States Postal Service shipping strength standards and stackable to at least 3 levels high. Referenced standards include IEC 61951-2, IEC 61959, IEC 62133, ANSI/ASQ Z1.4-2003, ANSI C18.2M Part 1:2013, JIS C 8708:2004, and UL 2054.
