About this file

This is a technical specification document for a Low Self-Discharge Nickel-Metal Hydride Battery Pack (Specification 605:2026, Version 1.1, October 2026) issued by the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS/BPH), Library of Congress, for use in Digital Talking Book Machines (DTBM).

The specification establishes comprehensive design and performance requirements for rechargeable battery packs comprising six matched AA-size Nickel-Metal Hydride cells optimized for low self-discharge. Battery packs must meet precise physical dimensions (88mm width, 54mm height, 15.5mm depth maximum) with a weight not exceeding 200 grams and deliver 7.2 volts nominal output at 2,000 mAh capacity. Individual cells require PVC heat shrink insulation and re-sealable safety vents, with specifications for cell size (14.4mm x 50.5mm) and weight (30 grams nominal). The battery pack must incorporate specific components including a Bourns MF-S350 self-resetting PTC fuse with defined electrical characteristics, a Semitec 104AT-2 precision thermistor, and an ACCU THERM AT100PN thermal switch triggered at 70°C ±5°C. Cable harness wiring specifications require 22AWG 7x30 stranded wire in red, black, and white with a JST PAP-04V-S connector. The specification mandates compliance with international standards (IEC 61951-2, IEC 61959, IEC 62133, UL 62133-1) and includes performance testing requirements including vibration tests (30 minutes at 10–50Hz), pull tests (20-pound force sustained for 1 minute), drop tests (three drops from 50cm), and UL-specified short-circuit, overcharge, and forced-discharge tests. Batteries must demonstrate 500-cycle life with minimum 80% capacity retention, residual capacity recovery within 24 hours, and self-discharge performance meeting specified curves across storage temperatures (0°C, 25°C, 40°C) over five years. Packaging requirements mandate individual battery packs in shipping cartons holding 10 units, with six shipping cartons per master overpack box, all suitable for USPS transit and stackable to three levels high.
