Appear Speech

Overview

Appear Speech is part of VoiceMetrix’s Advanced Judicial Information System Suite. It is an extensible messaging platform providing seamless and timely communications between federal jury offices and their jurors.

Appear Speech offers automated outbound and inbound calling, email, and bi-directional text messaging to remind jurors of their reporting date or inform them of revised reporting times, dates, or cancellations. Jurors can likewise call or text into Appear, enter their juror number, and confirm their instructions or check the status of an individual request. Jurors may call or text 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Jurors have the option to check their reporting status or receive updates through text messaging. This opt-in service enables faster communications between the court and jurors by allowing customized prompts. This can include updated instructions on parking, locations, web links, contact information, etc. All text communications are verified through the juror’s cellphone number in JMS, ensuring that only the juror in question is contacted.

The Appear Desktop

Appear Speech provides a desktop dashboard for the Jury Administrators and staff to manage jury communications and scheduling. Jury staff have complete control of message assignment using the browser based Appear Desktop interface. Appear can automatically assign selected messages based on juror status, or staff can override default status messages with special instructions to notify jurors of rescheduled, canceled, or special appearances. These overrides can be assigned by pool, panel, or individual juror.

Jury staff can use the Appear Desktop to schedule any combination of outgoing voice, email, or text messages to remind jurors of their appearance, cancel their appearance for settled cases, or reschedule for any reason, including inclement weather. Using Appear, jury staff can contact precisely who they want, when they want, and concisely communicate critical, up-to-the-minute information.

Appear Desktop also provides a rich set of message and call reports for users to track inbound and outbound message activity and view individual juror message history reports. Users can export these reports to PDF, Excel, or MS Word formats.

Interface with Host Jury Management Systems

Appear sources its juror information from host jury management systems and can synchronize data through a variety interfaces or APIs including direct SQL or REST services using various protocols. Conversely, host systems can pull current and historical message data from the Appear database through the same means.

At a minimum, Appear requires these data elements to synchronize juror information from a host jury management system:

• Juror Name (Last Name, First + Middle Name)

• Unique Juror Number

• Panel/Pool Number

• Juror Status (summoned, excused, deferred, etc.)

• Cell Phone Number + any additional contact numbers

• Email Address
