Engineering Liaison Memorandum Summary

This is an Engineering Liaison Memorandum (ELM 225086) issued by the U.S. Naval Ship Repair Facility and Japan Regional Maintenance Center in Yokosuka, Japan, dated February 17, 2022, regarding hydraulic flush filter guidance for the LARC-V vessel. The memorandum addresses an obsolescence issue where the original Schroeder Industries KF81K10PF24D5 Series A filter (element part number KZ10), specified in NAVSEA F9YC0-AB-TMM-010 Rev. 5, has been replaced by the manufacturer with the KF5 filter series. The KF5 has a lower maximum operating pressure (500 psi versus the KF8's higher rating) but the In-Service Engineer Agent (ISEA) confirmed this lower pressure rating has no operational impact on the hydraulic system flush procedure.

The required action directs all personnel to order Schroeder Industries filter model KF51KZ10VF24D5 to support the hydraulic procedure per paragraph 6.3.11 of the technical manual reference. This guidance applies to all Sasebo-homeported LARC-V A1/A2 craft that utilize the referenced technical manual. The ELM covers LARC vessels 876 and 936 under specific Engineering Service Request (ESR MISC-170) and will be superseded once the technical manual is revised with the new filter model number, expected in summer 2022. The memorandum includes detailed Schroeder Industries product specification sheets for the KF5 filter providing performance characteristics, element specifications, and model number configuration guidance.

2. ENCL:

(1) Email from ISEA, EXWC ExPO EX262 Sealift Support Engineering Branch, dated 15 Feb 2022

3. BACKGROUND:

a. Paragraph 6-3.11.2.a. of reference (a) specifies the hydraulic system flush filter as Schroeder

Industries model number KF81K10PF24D5 Series A, with element part number KZ10. Per Planner correspondence with OEM, the KF8 series of filter was replaced by the KF5 filter series several years ago. However, the KF5 has a lower maximum operating pressure than the KF8 series.

b. Per correspondence with the ISEA, they confirmed the filter model change and that the lower pressure rating would have no effect on the hydraulic system flush. See enclosure (1). The ISEA will include the new filter model number in the next revision to reference (a) this summer.

Sunny, Cary Fujikawa and James Barkey don't have access to the shared drive unfortunately since their accounts are not in the NMCI directory. Just talked to Vernon and it seems they won't be able to get access. As discussed over the phone, my recommendation is to send the data through SAFE or create a MS Team Flankspeed Group to share the alteration records/documentation and supply pertinent drawings to NBU‐7.

‐‐break‐‐

Cary, I'll be attaching LARC‐V System Architecture (Drawing Tree) for reference.

I'm not sending drawings through email since file sizes are too big.

Jimmy Valdez will be sending directions on how to get access to Navy TDR (Engineering Drawings Repository). NBU‐7 will use TDR until the team transitions to MBPS.

‐Drawing 1600907‐1 Rev. W is the latest ‐Drawing 1600911‐1 Rev. L is the latest.

‐Drawing 1600911‐2 Rev. U is the latest.

‐Drawing 1600911‐3 Rev. N is the latest.

‐Drawing 1600911‐12 Rev. J is the latest.

For the hydraulic system flush: See attached. KF5 is a direct replacement to the KF8 filtration system; however, there is a slight drop in operating pressure on the filtration device which does not impact the filtration process. The attachment has highlighted in yellow the part number to be ordered.

Pressure Drop Information Based on Flow Rate and Viscosity

KF5 ∆Phousing for fluids with sp gr (specific gravity) = 0.86:

∆Pfilter = ∆Phousing + (∆Pelement *Vf )

Exercise:

Determine ∆Pfilter at 50 gpm (189.5 L/min) for KF51KZ10S24D5 using 200 SUS (42.6 cSt) fluid.

Use the housing pressure curve to determine ∆Phousing at 50 gpm. In this case, ∆Phousing is 3 psi (.21 bar) on the graph for the KF5 housing.

Use the element pressure curve to determine ∆Pelement at 50 gpm. In this case, ∆Pelement is 2 psi (.14 bar) according to the graph for the KZ10 element.

Because the viscosity in this sample is 200 SUS (42.6 cSt), we determine the Viscosity Factor (Vf) by dividing the Operating Fluid Viscosity with the Standard Viscosity of 150 SUS (32 cSt). To best determine your Operating Fluid Viscosity, please reference the chart in Appendix D.

Finally, the overall filter pressure differential, ∆Pfilter , is calculated by adding ∆Phousing with the true element pressure differential, (∆Pelement*Vf ). The ∆Pelement from the graph has to be multiplied by the viscosity factor to get the true pressure differential across the element.

Solution:

∆Phousing

Vf = 200 SUS (42.6 cSt) / 150 SUS (32 cSt) = 1.3

∆Pfilter = 3 psi + (2 psi * 1.3) = 5.6 psi

OR

∆Pfilter = .21 bar + (.14 bar * 1.3) = .40 bar

∆Phousing = 3 psi [.21 bar] | ∆Pelement = 2 psi [.14 bar]
