1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Installer Qualifications: Skilled mechanics who have successfully completed an apprenticeship program or another craft training program certified by the Department of Labor, Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training.

B. Fire-Test-Response Characteristics: Insulation and related materials shall have fire-test-response characteristics indicated, as determined by testing identical products per ASTM E 84, by a testing and inspecting agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction. Factory label insulation and jacket materials and adhesive, mastic, tapes, and cement material containers, with appropriate markings of applicable testing and inspecting agency.

1. Insulation Installed Indoors: Flame-spread index of 25 or less, and smoke-developed index of 50 or less.

1.5 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Packaging: Insulation material containers shall be marked by manufacturer with appropriate ASTM standard designation, type and grade, and maximum use temperature.

1.6 SCHEDULING

A. Schedule insulation application after pressure testing systems and, where required, after installing and testing heat tracing. Insulation application may begin on segments that have satisfactory test results.

B. Complete installation and concealment of plastic materials as rapidly as possible in each area of construction.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 DUCTWORK INSULATION

A. Manufacturers:

1. Knauf Fiber Glass

2. Johns Manville

5. Securement: Adhesive and mechanical fasteners spaced a minimum of 12” on center with a minimum of 2 rows per side of duct. Secure with speed washers and all joints, breaks and punctures shall be sealed with appropriate pressure-sensitive foil tape, or glass fabric and vapor retarder mastic.

6. Design Basis: Johns Manville 814 Series

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Examine substrates and conditions for compliance with requirements for installation and other conditions affecting performance of insulation application.

1. Verify that systems and equipment to be insulated have been tested and are free of defects.

2. Verify that surfaces to be insulated are clean and dry.

3. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

B. Mix insulating cements with clean potable water; if insulating cements are to be in contact with stainless-steel surfaces, use demineralized water.

3.2 INSTALLATION

A. Furnish factory-applied or field-applied vapor retarder jackets.

B. Secure factory-applied jackets with pressure sensitive adhesive self-sealing longitudinal laps and butt strips.

C. Secure field-applied jackets with outward clinch expanding staples and seal staple penetrations with vapor retarder mastic.

D. Insulate fittings, joints, and valves with molded insulation of like material and thickness as adjacent pipe.

E. Continue insulation through penetrations of building assemblies or portions of assemblies having fire resistance rating of two hour or less. Provide intumescent firestopping when continuing insulation through assembly. Finish at supports, protrusions, and interruptions.

F. Continuous insulation through hangers and supports.

G. Insulated ductwork conveying air below ambient temperature:

1. Provide insulation with vapor retarder jackets.

2. Finish with tape and vapor retarder jacket.

3. Continue insulation through walls, sleeves, hangers, and other duct penetrations.

4. Insulate entire system including fittings, joints, flanges, fire dampers, flexible connections, and expansion joints.

H. Insulated ductwork conveying air above ambient temperature:

1. Provide with or without standard vapor retarder jacket.

2. Insulate fittings and joints. Where service access is required, bevel and seal ends of insulation.

I. External Duct Insulation Application:

1. Secure insulation with vapor retarder with wires and seal jacket joints with vapor retarder adhesive or tape to match jacket.

2. Secure insulation without vapor retarder with staples, tape, or wires.

3. Install without sag on underside of ductwork. Use adhesive or mechanical fasteners where necessary to prevent sagging. Lift ductwork off trapeze hangers and insert spacers.

4. Seal vapor retarder penetrations by mechanical fasteners with vapor retarder adhesive.

5. Stop and point insulation around access doors and damper operators to allow operation without disturbing wrapping.

J. Additional duct insulation requirements

1. All cooling supply ducts shall be insulated in unconditioned spaces

2. Insulate all heating ducts in non-heated spaces

3.3 SCHEDULES

A. Ductwork Systems:

1. Plenums, conditioned space within the building:

a. Energy Conservation Construction Code Minimum R-5.0

b. Concealed Space:

1) (Type A) Provide 2” of Knauf Duct Wrap with an installed R-6.0, for ductwork less than 18” wide.

2. Unconditioned space within the building:
