Drilling observed and samples logged by David Eckels of Sound Geothermal.
The test bore was drilled through alluvial deposits, possibly braided stream channels, consisting of layers of clay, silt, gravel, sand, and an occasional cobble. Minor drilling fluid loss was encountered in gravel layers between 20 and 40 feet, indicating the presence of water.
This fluid loss was stopped by thickening the drilling mud. This was the only notable zone of water gravel in the bore (no more fluid loss);
gravels in the rest of the bore appeared to be bedded with clay and coarse sand. Borehole stability appeared to be good - after sitting overnight at 280' there was no caving the next morning. Drilling times were relatively good, averaging 1.1 ft./min. for the entire bore, however the rate of penetration did slow somewhat below 300 ft. Earthloop insertion was slightly delayed due to an equipment issue with the cable spool - it is suspected that this delay allowed silt to settle out and fill the bottom of the bore. The tremie was inserted to the same depth without issue.
