About this file
This is Addendum 3 to the site grading plan for the Sheraden Park Phase 1 Construction project in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, prepared by Fahringer, McClarty, Grey, Inc. as the civil engineer and Klavon Design Associates, Inc. as the landscape architect. The addendum provides updated existing contours and proposed grading specifications for Area 5 of the project, which includes site preparation, earthwork, and drainage management. The overall grading work entails approximately 3,500 cubic yards of cut (with a maximum depth of 4.25 feet) and 2,000 cubic yards of fill (with a maximum depth of 3.00 feet). Key specifications include proof-rolling of exposed subgrades with minimum ten passes using a vibratory roller compactor, removal of soft or loose zones through undercutting, stabilization using AASHTO No. 1 crushed stone if required, and compaction of cohesive fill to a minimum of 95 percent of maximum standard Proctor dry density and granular fill to at least 70 percent relative density. Steep slopes exceeding 25 percent must be stabilized through vegetation and plantings, with finished slopes not to exceed 1.5:1 ratio for cut slopes and 2:1 ratio for fill slopes.
The document specifies that the contractor is responsible for locating all underground utilities, avoiding damage during installation, and repairing any damage incurred. The contractor must also verify all existing field conditions and report discrepancies to the owner and landscape architect prior to commencing work. All edges of existing curbing, asphalt, concrete roadway, and concrete sidewalks that abut new construction must be sawcut to clean, smooth edges, with new and existing paving or earthwork blended smoothly at grade transitions. The general contractor is required to fine-grade all disturbed beds and planting areas in preparation for the landscape contractor, and inlets must be maintained clear of sediment and debris to ensure proper water flow. Drawings are based on surveys prepared by Tri-State Design and Development dated February 8, 2023, with additional survey information provided on September 5, 2023.

GRADING NOTES (CITY OF PITTSBURGH)
EROSION AND ELEVATED SOIL MOISTURE CONDITIONS ARE PRESENT AND WILL IMPACT THE
LONG-TERM PERFORMANCE OF THE PROPOSED PARK FEATURES. REVIEW THE FOLLOWING FOR
COUNTERMEASURES TO THE GEO-HAZARDS DESCRIBED ABOVE:
1. FILL/BACKFILL CONSIDERATIONS
1.1. GRADING AROUND THE BASKETBALL PARKING LOT AND THE NEW ADA ACCESSIBLE
PARKING STALLS, ALL TOPSOIL, VEGETATION, AND OTHER DELETERIOUS MATERIALS
SHOULD BE REMOVED.
1.2. EXPOSED SUBGRADES SHOULD BE PROOF-ROLLED WITH A MINIMUM OF TEN (10) PASSES
WITH A WALK-BEHIND (STATIC WEIGHT) VIBRATORY ROLLER COMPACTOR.
1.3. SOFT OR LOOSE ZONES DELINEATED BY THE PROOF-ROLLING SHOULD BE UNDERCUT AN
ADDITIONAL FOOT BELOW THE FINAL RESPECTIVE SUBGRADE LEVEL.
1.4. SHOULD THE UNDERCUT SUBGRADE REMAIN UNSUITABLE, IT SHOULD BE STABILIZED BY
'PUNCHING' SUITABLE, INERT (NON-CARBONACEOUS, NON-PYRITIFEROUS,
NON-EXPANSIVE, AND NON-SLAG) CRUSHED STONE MEETING THE SIZE AND GRADING
REQUIREMENTS OF AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF STATE HIGHWAY AND TRANSPORTATION
OFFICIALS (AASHTO) NO. 1 INTO IT TO CREATE AN ADEQUATE "WORKING SURFACE".
1.5. EXCAVATED MATERIAL TO BE USED AS BACKFILL SHALL BE EITHER PLACED AND
COMPACTED IN THE WORK AREA AS SOON AS POSSIBLE TO LIMIT ITS EXPOSURE TO
RAINFALL EVENTS, OR PROTECTED WITH PLASTIC TARPS IF INSTALLATION REQUIRES
MULTIPLE DAYS.
1.6. COHESIVE FILL SHOULD BE COMPACTED TO A MINIMUM OF 95 PERCENT OF THE MAXIMUM
STANDARD PROCTOR DRY DENSITY AS DETERMINED BY ASTM TEST DESIGNATION D698,
AT WATER CONTENTS WITHIN THREE PERCENT (±3%) OF THE OPTIMUM WATER CONTENT
ESTABLISHED BY THAT TEST.
1.7. GRANULAR FILL SHOULD BE COMPACTED TO AT LEAST 70 PERCENT RELATIVE DENSITY AS
DETERMINED BY ASTM TEST DESIGNATIONS D4253 AND 4254-16.
2. STEEP SLOPES (EXCEEDING 25%) SHALL BE STABILIZED BY VEGETATION/PLANTINGS AS
SPECIFIED ON DRAWINGS L120 - L124.
2.1. FINISHED SLOPES SHALL COMPLY WITH THE FOLLOWING MAXIMUM RATIOS:
2.1.1. CUT SLOPES: 1.5:1 (HORIZONTAL TO VERTICAL)
2.1.2. FILL SLOPES: 2:1 (HORIZONTAL TO VERTICAL)
3. ROUGH ORDER OF MAGNITUDE (ROM) FOR GRADING SITE-WIDE:
3.1. OVERALL CUT VOLUME: 3,500 CY
3.2. MAX. CUT DEPTH: 4.25 FT
3.2. OVERALL FILL VOLUME: 2,000 CY
3.3. MAX. FILL DEPTH: 3.00 FT
