Section 204. — EXCAVATION AND EMBANKMENT
11/12/20– FP-14
Construction Requirements
204.05 Conserved Topsoil. Delete the first paragraph and substitute the following:
Conserve topsoil from roadway excavation that is free from hard soil, rock, clay, toxic substances, trash or other deleterious material, and is suitable for growth of grass, cover crops or native vegetation. Topsoil refers to the uppermost soil horizon, usually 6 inches to 18 inches deep. It may include decayed organic and other materials capable of supporting vegetation. Separate topsoil from other excavated material and stockpile conserved topsoil in low windrows in locations approved by CO.
204.06 Roadway Excavation. Delete the second to last paragraph and substitute the following:
Conserve sufficient quantities of 6-inch (150-millimeter) minus material from the roadway excavation to use for finishing the roadbed. Sufficient quantities are available within the roadway excavation. Dispose of unsuitable or excess excavation material according to Subsection 204.14.
Replace shortage of suitable material caused by premature disposal of roadway excavation.
204.07 Subexcavation. Delete the text of this Subsection and substitute the following:
Take cross-sections according to Section 152. Excavate material to the required limits as shown on the plans. Adjust subexcavation depth as directed by the CO in the field. Excavate only unconsolidated soils within the areas shown in the plans. Do not excavate bedrock or sinter materials.
Dispose of unsuitable material according to Subsection 204.14. Place stabilization geogrid and separation-stabilization geotextile according to Section 207 and as shown on the plans. Place backfill material in horizontal layers not exceeding 6 inches in compacted depth. Recovered asphalt pavement milling material (exceeding the quantity required for Section 308 work) or embankment material (conserved from the top 4-inches of roadway excavation), may be used as backfill material for the top half layer of the subexcavated depth. Compact backfill material according to Subsection 204.11. Prevent unsuitable material from mixing with backfill.
204.10 Embankment Construction. Add the following to paragraph (b):
Construct the top 12 inches (300 millimeters) of the embankment with 6-inch (150-millimeter) minus material conserved from the roadway cuts.
