F-37 DIVISION 600

Special Contract Requirements Project: ID DOT 21(1), SH-21 Wildlife Overpass at Cervidae Peak, MP 19.3

Section 619. — FENCES, GATES, CATTLE GUARDS AND

BOLLARDS POSTS

Construction Requirements

619.03 Fences and Gates. Amend as follows:

(a) General. Delete the first paragraph and substitute the following:

Clear along the fence line. Remove and dispose of trees, brush, logs, upturned stumps, roots of downed trees, rubbish, and debris according to Subsection 201.06. Clear sufficiently to permit access to the fence alignment shown in the Plans. Preserve and protect all existing vegetation that does not unreasonably interfere with the construction, as determined by the CO.

Limit the disturbance of existing vegetation to only that is necessary for wildlife fence installation. All ground disturbance areas other than 3 feet on either side of the wildlife fence centerline alignment shall be incidental to the Wildlife Fence, and shall be seeded per these Special Contract Requirements at the Contractor’s expense.

Add the following:

(d) Wildlife fences and gates.

(1) Posts. Set all end, corner, pull, intermediate, and brace posts in concrete to the dimensions shown in the Plans. Ensure the top of posts are consistent height relative to the existing ground. Posts are not required to be field cut to meet field conditions, but if field cuts are made, use the zinc-rich coating paint specified in Subsection 719.04(a) to treat galvanized steel field cuts, and all damaged galvanizing; according to the applicable requirements of ASTM A 780.

Crown all concrete footings to shed water. Drive all line posts with flange in the ground to the dimension shown in the Plans.

Place posts in accordance with the maximum spacing referenced in the Plans. Measure spacing along the line and grade of the fence. Place intermediate posts at 120-foot intervals.

Intermediate post assemblies shall be at a maximum 360-foot interval and at horizontal or vertical changes of greater than 20-degrees, or at intervals to utilize standard rolls to minimize cutting and waste. Install corner post assemblies at horizontal or vertical alignment changes greater than 20-degrees.

Place line posts in accordance with the Plans. At sag locations and where there is no buried apron, use additional line post or optional sag weight independent or in combination to maintain the maximum 1-inch gap between the bottom of the woven wire fabric and the existing ground, as reference in detail “Sag Detail” shown in the Plans. The maximum allowable gap for the bottom woven wire fabric and existing ground is 4 inches where there is buried apron. The line post and optional sag weight are incidental to the Wildlife Fence item.

Fit all end, corner, pull, intermediate, and brace pipe posts for the wildlife fence with an approved top designed to fit securely over the post.

F-38 DIVISION 600

Project: ID DOT 21(1), SH-21 Wildlife Overpass at Cervidae Peak, MP 19.3

Where solid rock is encountered without overburden, drill line post holes at least 14 inches (350 millimeters) deep and end, corner, gate, and pull posts at least 20 inches (500 millimeters) deep in the solid rock. Make the hole width or diameter at least 1 inch (25 millimeters) greater than the post width or diameter. Cut the post to the required length before installation or drill the hole deep enough to set the post at the required height. Set and plumb the post and fill the hole with grout. Thoroughly work the grout into the hole to eliminate voids. Crown the grout to drain water away from the post. Metal posts set in this manner to not require anchor plates and concrete footings.

Where solid rock is covered with soil or loose rock overburden, set posts to the plan depth or to the minimum depth into the solid rock as specified above, whichever is less. When the depth of overburden is greater than 12 inches (300 millimeters) or less, anchor plates and concrete backfill are not required. Grout the portion of the post in solid rock.

(2) Woven Wire Fabric. Construct the wildlife fence along the line as staked. Deviations in alignment to miss obstacles will be as determined by the CO. In sections requiring handwork as called out in the plans or as determined by the CO, equipment use is as approved by CO. Place woven wire fabric on the face of the posts opposite of SH-21, unless otherwise specified in the Plans or designated. Construct fence on both sides of the highway concurrently so as to not trap animals on the roadway.

Woven wire fabric for the wildlife fence consists of one roll of 8-foot non-gradient woven wire; or two rolls of 47-inch non-gradient woven wire. Overlap the 47-inch woven wire by 2 inches and fasten together with 9-gauge hog rings at maximum 18-inch spacing.

Stretch taut and securely fasten the fabric to posts at a minimum of 12 evenly spaced locations including the top and bottom of each wire roll by approved methods. Woven wire fabric for the buried apron consists of one roll of 4-foot non-gradient woven wire. Securely fasten the apron woven wire fabric to the wildlife fence woven wire fabric using 9-gauge hog rings.

Place woven wire fabric in accordance to the dimensions shown in the Plans. Three feet wide excavation is required along the fence alignment for the buried fence apron. Minor excavation of high points or filling of depressions along the fence alignment may also be required to achieve the clearance dimensions shown in the Plans. Perform excavation according to Section 209.

Incidental to the wildlife fence installation, rock relocation will be required where the wildlife fence alignment cannot be relocated or where existing rock structures permit wildlife to cross fence, and as designated. Rock relocation consists of relocating rocks from 2-foot diameter to 4-foot diameter a minimum of 5-feet perpendicular to the staked fence alignment. During rock relocation and Wildlife Fence installation, secure loose rock as to avoid damage to private property, roadway, and traveling public.

(3) Gates. Construct all gates in accordance to the locations, dimensions, and specifications in the Plans. Each gate assembly consists of steel frames covered with the same woven wire fabric as the fence. Ensure the steel fence woven wire fabric is taut and securely fastened to the gate frames in the same manner as specified for the wildlife fence.

Shop weld all gate frames and paint all welds with an approved zinc rich paint.
