About this file

This is a Performance Work Statement (Section 02 41 00 – Demolition) for the VA New York Harbor Health Care System, Margaret Cochran Campus, Repair Tunnels Utilities project (VA Project No. 630-26-800). The section specifies demolition work including removal of gypsum board, abandonment of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems, and daily debris disposal.

The contractor must perform demolition work while eliminating hazards to personnel and property, minimizing interference with adjacent areas and utilities, and maintaining free passage to adjacent structures. Key requirements include: providing enclosed dust chutes with control gates and overhead protective bridges at each floor; preventing dust and flying particles through water sprinklers (where conditions permit) and daily vacuuming; maintaining at least one usable stairway in each structure during demolition; keeping fire extinguishers readily available when using cutting torches or fire-risk equipment; maintaining clear access to fire hydrants with a 4,500 mm (15-foot) debris-free radius; and conducting site surveys and examining drawings before beginning work to avoid damage to items remaining in place. The contractor must coordinate work with other sections, construct and maintain necessary shoring and bracing, and ensure structural elements are not overloaded. Additional compliance requirements include adherence to Safety Requirements (Section 01 35 26), General Requirements (Section 01 00 00), Asbestos Abatement (Section 02 82 11), Lead-Based Paint Removal (Section 02 83 33.13), Temporary Environmental Controls (Section 01 57 19), and Construction Waste Management (Section 01 74 19). Upon completion of each work phase, the contractor must perform terminal sanitary cleaning of worked areas including corridors, subject to Contracting Officer Representative (COR) approval.
