About this file

This is a specification section for painting work on the Margaret Cochran Campus Repair Tunnels Utilities project (Project #630-26-800). The specification outlines comprehensive requirements for all painting and finishing tasks, including prime coats, surface preparation, and finish applications across various substrates such as ferrous metals, galvanized metals, concrete block, gypsum drywall, and wood.

The contractor must use Benjamin Moore paints and comply with Master Painters Institute (MPI) product specifications, with all coats on a particular substrate sourced from a single manufacturer. Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) content limits are specified for different paint types: flat paints at 50 g/L, non-flat at 150 g/L, primers at 200 g/L, and anticorrosive paints at 250 g/L. Lead content must not exceed 0.06 percent by weight. Painters must be qualified journeymen with documented experience on at least three similar projects within three years. Paint applications require brush or roller methods, with spray application only upon written approval from the Contracting Officer Representative (COR). Surface preparation is mandatory, including cleaning, sanding, and moisture content verification (maximum 12-15 percent depending on substrate type). Applications typically require three coats: prime, body, and finish, with minimum 48-hour drying intervals. The specification includes detailed identity painting schedules for piping systems following ASME A13.1 standards, with specific color-coding for various pipe contents and pressure designations. Mock-up panels must be approved on-site before proceeding with full work, and all painting must comply with federal safety requirements, environmental regulations, and manufacturer specifications.
