About this file
This is a specification document for fire suppression piping systems related to the Amity Regional School District No. 5's fire pump replacement project at Amity Middle School in Bethany, Connecticut. The project, identified as Van Zelm #2024090.00, involves the installation of wet-pipe sprinkler systems with fire suppression piping inside the building. The specification outlines requirements for all piping materials, fittings, valves, and installation methods, with sealed proposals due no later than Friday, November 14, 2025 at 1:00 P.M. A mandatory pre-bid walk-through is required by appointment only, with one contractor at a time, and no appointments will be scheduled after 2:00 PM on Friday, November 7, 2025.
The specification requires that all fire protection equipment, sprinklers, and devices be UL listed, FM approved, and based on NFPA 13 design standards. Standard piping components must be rated for at least 175 psig working pressure. Installation must comply with NFPA 13 standards and be approved by both the school's insurance carrier and authorities having jurisdiction. The contractor must be a professional engineer licensed in Connecticut with a minimum of five years of experience on similar projects and must prepare shop drawings, hydraulic calculations, and field test reports. Piping systems shall utilize Schedule 40 threaded-end black steel pipe with cast or malleable-iron threaded fittings for standard-pressure, wet-pipe applications. Field quality control requires hydrostatic testing at not less than 200 psig for two hours, with all results documented in test and inspection reports.

3.5 VALVE APPLICATIONS
A. Drawings indicate valve types to be used. Where specific valve types are not indicated, the following requirements apply:
1. Listed Fire-Protection Valves: UL listed and FM Global approved for applications where required by NFPA 13.
a. Shutoff Duty: Use ball, butterfly, or gate valves.
a.
2. Unlisted General-Duty Valves: For applications where UL-listed and FM Global approved valves are not required by NFPA 13.
a. Shutoff Duty: Use ball, butterfly, or gate valves.
b. Throttling Duty: Use ball or globe valves.
3.6 JOINT CONSTRUCTION
A. Refer to Division 23 Section "Basic Mechanical Materials and Methods" for basic piping joint construction.
B. Threaded Joints: Comply with NFPA 13 for pipe thickness and threads. Do not thread pipe smaller than NPS 8 with wall thickness less than Schedule 40 unless approved by authorities having jurisdiction and threads are checked by a ring gage and com...
C. Grooved Joints: Assemble joints with listed coupling and gasket, lubricant, and bolts.
1. Steel Pipe: Roll-groove piping as indicated. Use grooved-end fittings and rigid, grooved-end-pipe couplings, unless otherwise indicated.
1.
D. Dissimilar-Metal Piping Joints: Construct joints using dielectric fittings compatible with both piping materials.
1. NPS 2 and Smaller: Use dielectric unions, couplings, or nipples.
2. NPS 2-1/2 to NPS 4: Use dielectric flanges.
