SECTION 101400

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 SECTION INCLUDES

A. Room and door signs.

B. Interior directional and informational signs.

C. Emergency evacuation maps.

D. Signs required for Building Code compliance and building occupancy.

1.2 SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data: Fabricator's printed product literature for each type of sign, indicating sign styles, font, foreground and background colors, locations, overall dimensions of each sign.

B. Signage Schedule: Contractor to provide signage schedule of all signs. Provide information sufficient to completely depict each sign for fabrication, including room number, room name, other text to be applied, sign and letter sizes, fonts, and colors.

1. When room numbers to appear on signs differ from those on the Drawings, include the drawing room number on schedule.

2. When content of signs is indicated to be determined later, request such information from Government at least 2 months prior to start of fabrication; upon request, submit preliminary schedule.

3. Submit for approval by Government prior to fabrication.

C. Samples: Submit two samples of each type of sign, of size similar to that required for project, illustrating sign style, font, and method of attachment.

D. Selection Samples: Where colors are not specified, submit two sets of color selection charts or chips.

E. Verification Samples: Submit samples showing colors specified.

F. Fabricator's Installation Instructions: Include installation templates and attachment devices.

1.3 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Fabricator Qualifications: Company specializing in manufacturing the products specified in this Section with minimum three years of documented experience.

B. Basis of Design: Specifications are based on sign types indicated on Drawings. Sign types manufactured by other acceptable manufacturers are permitted, subject to compliance with specified requirements; and provided that deviations in design, profile, and finishes are minor, and do not detract substantially from the indicated design intent.

1.4 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Package signs as required to prevent damage before installation.

B. Store tape adhesive at normal room temperature.

1.5 FIELD CONDITIONS

A. Do not install tape adhesive when ambient temperature is lower than recommended by manufacturer.

B. Maintain this minimum temperature during and after installation of signs.

2.2 SIGNAGE APPLICATIONS - GENERAL

A. Accessibility Compliance: Signs are required to comply with ADA Standards and ICC

A117.1 and applicable building codes, unless otherwise indicated; in the event of conflicting requirements, comply with the most comprehensive and specific requirements.

2.3 SIGN STANDARDS

A. It is the intent of these specifications to establish a sign standard for the Government that may include but is not limited to primary and secondary directories, wall mounted and overhead directionals, flag mounted directionals, primary room identification, restrooms, conference room, work station ID’s and all code compliant signage. The Government may not obtain all signs and sign types indicated; provide design for all indicated signs and submit specified shop drawings for all indicated signs.

B. Typography:

1. Type Style and Copy: True, clean, accurate reproduction of typeface(s) specified.

Set normal letter spacing and interline spacing by manufacturer.

2. Arrows, Symbols and Logo Art: Provided in style, sizes, colors and spacing as applicable to signage package and available from manufacturer.

3. Grade II Braille: Perfectly round, clear insertion beads.

C. Color and Finishes:

1. Colors, Patterns and Artwork: As available from manufacturer's full range.

2. Message Background: As directed by Contracting Officer.

3. Finishes: Comply with current federal ADA and all state and local requirements.

2.4 SIGNS

A. Signage System:

1. Incorporate a decorative laminate or painted face with applied graphics including all tactile requirements in compliance with ADA specifications.

2. Provide all signs, including work station and room identifications, overheads and flag mounts, directionals and directories with matching appearance and constructed utilizing same manufacturing process to assure consistent look throughout.

B. Materials:

1. Sign Background: 0.25 inch thick substrate with high pressure laminate or painted surface.

2. Sign Face: 0.125 inch (nominal) standard grade, high pressure surface laminate or painted surface.

3. Tactile Lettering: Precision machined, raised 1/32 inch thick matte PETG, and subsurface colored for scratch resistance.

4. Accent Bar: Incorporate metallic accent bar; anodized with brushed satin finish or painted metallic finish.

C. Standard Colors:

1. Face and Background Color: Standard grade, high pressure laminate, or painted surface; colors to be selected by CO from manufacturer's full range.

2. Standard Tactile Colors: Match manufacturer's ADA standard color selection.

D. Construction:

1. Sign Surfaces: Precision machined to a 90-degree angle; smooth edges, without chips, burrs, sharp edges, and marks.

2. Utilize an acrylic sphere for Grade II Braille inserted directly into scratch resistant, high pressure laminate sign face. Pressure fit Braille dots in high tolerance drilled holes.

3. Braille Dots: Half hemispherical domed and protruding a minimum 0.025 inch.

4. Utilize pressure activated adhesive; non-hazardous and allowing for flexing and deflection of adhered components due to changes in temperature and moisture without bond failure.

5. Provide signs with appropriate mounting hardware; finished, architectural in appearance, and suitable for indicated mounting surfaces.

6. Some signs may be installed on glass. Place blank backer on opposite side of glass to cover tape and adhesive; match sign in size and shape.

E. Printed Inserts:

1. Capable of accepting paper or acetate inserts to allow changing and updating as required.

2. Insert Components: 0.080 inch thick non-glare acrylic window, inlayed flush to sign face for smooth, seamless appearance.

3. Provide and install all signage inserts.

4. Use manufacturer-provided template containing layout, font, color, artwork and trim lines to allow Government to produce inserts on laser or ink jet printer. Provide template in Adobe Acrobat or Word format (.pdf).

2.5 CODE-REQUIRED SIGNAGE

A. Code-Required Above-Ceiling Wall, Barrier, and Partition Signs: Provide all signs required by current ADA requirements as well as ICC and NFPA codes, for marking and identification of fire walls, fire barriers, fire partitions, smoke barriers, smoke partitions, and other walls required to have protected openings; determine requirements and report to CO prior to making specified submittals. Include cost of these signs in Contract Sum.

1. Sign Type: Flat signs with applied character panel media; permanent materials and installation.

2. Sign Copy: Capital lettering not less than 0.5 inch high.

B. Emergency Evacuation Maps

1. Provide one map per elevator lobby.

2. Comply with 2018 International Building Code section 1009.9 and 2018 NFPA 101.

3. Map content to be provided by signage vendor in coordination with CO

C. Stairway Identification Signs

1. Comply with 2018 International Building Code and 2018 NFPA

D. Building Identification Signs

1. Use individual dimensional metal letters

2. Mount on outside wall in location as determined by CO or as shown on drawings.

E. Code Required Door and Room Signs: Provide all signs required by ADA, current

International Building Codes, and 2018 NFPA. Determine requirements and report to

CO prior to making specified submittals. Include cost of these signs in Contract Sum.

1. Sign Type: Flat sign with applied character panel media.

2. Sign Copy: As directed by CO.

F. No Smoking Signs

1. Notate no smoking signage, to be located to ensure that smoke is kept at least 25 feet away from building entrances, operable windows and outdoor air intakes for the building’s HVAC system.

2. Provide at front and back of office building.

2.6 SIGN TYPES

A. Flat Signs: Signage media without frame.

1. Edges: Square.

2. Corners: Square.

2.7 DIMENSIONAL LETTERS

A. Metal Letters:

1. Metal: Aluminum casting.

2. Finish: Brushed, satin.

3. Mounting:

a. Exterior: Pin.

b. Interior: Flush.

4. Size:

a. Exterior: 10 inches high; Allow for total of 50 letters.

b. Interior: 6 inches high; Allow for total of 50 letters.

2.8 ACCESSORIES

A. Mounting Devices: Except as specified for each sign type, provide mounting devices specifically recommended by manufacturer for indicated application; concealed upon finished installation.

B. Tape Adhesive: Double sided tape, permanent adhesive.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Verify that substrate surfaces are ready to receive work.

3.2 INSTALLATION

A. Install in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

B. Install neatly, with horizontal edges level.

C. Locate signs where indicated:

1. Room and Door Signs: Locate on wall at latch side of door with tactile characters located minimum 48 inches above finished floor and maximum 60 inches above finished floor, and 3 inches from door frame, unless indicated otherwise.

2. Emergency Evacuation Maps: Locate adjacent to elevator doors, or where indicated on Drawings.

3. If no location is indicated obtain CO’s instructions.

D. Protect from damage until Substantial Completion; repair or replace damage items.

A. Coordination:

1. Coordinate the work with placement of support framing and anchors in walls and ceilings.

2. Coordinate location and installation of toilet accessories mounted on or in immediate proximity to toilet partitions.

1.3 SUBMITTALS

A. Shop Drawings: Indicate partition plan, elevation views, dimensions, details of wall supports, door swings.

B. Product Data: Provide data on panel construction, hardware, and accessories.

C. Samples: Submit manufacturer's full range of available colors, for selection.

D. Manufacturer's Installation Instructions: Indicate special procedures and perimeter conditions requiring special attention.

A. Toilet Compartments: Powder coated steel, floor-mounted headrail-braced.

1. Comply with NFPA 286, Class B, for finish surfaces of partition systems.

B. Doors, Panels, and Pilasters: Sheet steel faces, pressure bonded to sound deadening core, formed and closed edges; corners made with corner clips or mitered, welded, and ground smooth.

1. Panel Faces: 20 gage, 0.0359 inch.

2. Door Faces: 22 gage, 0.0299 inch.

3. Pilaster Faces: 20 gage, 0.0359 inch.

4. Reinforcement: 12 gage, 0.1046 inch.

5. Internal Reinforcement: Provide in areas of attached hardware and fittings. Mark locations of reinforcement for partition mounted washroom accessories.

C. Door and Panel Dimensions:

1. Thickness: 1 inch.

2. Door Width: 24 inch.

3. Door Width for Handicapped Use: 36 inch, out-swinging.

4. Height: 58 inch.

D. Pilasters: 1-1/4 inch thick, of sizes required to suit compartment width and spacing.

E. Urinal Screens: Wall mounted with continuous panel brackets.

1. Minimum Size: 24 inches wide x 48 inches high, bottom edge positioned 12 inches above floor surface.

2.4 ACCESSORIES

A. Pilaster Shoes: Formed ASTM A666, Type 304 stainless steel with No. 4 finish, 3 inch high, concealing floor fastenings.

1. Provide adjustment for floor variations with screw jack through steel saddles integral with pilaster.

B. Head Rails: Hollow chrome-plated steel tube, 1 by 1-5/8 inch size, with anti-grip strips and cast socket wall brackets.

C. Brackets: Satin stainless steel.

D. Attachments, Screws, and Bolts: Stainless steel, tamper proof type.

1. For attaching panels and pilasters to brackets: Through-bolts and nuts; tamper proof.

E. Hardware: Satin stainless steel:

1. Pivot hinges, gravity type, adjustable for door close positioning; two per door.

2. Nylon bearings.

3. Thumb turn or sliding door latch with exterior emergency access feature. Comply with ADA Standards at accessible compartment stalls.

4. Door strike and keeper with rubber bumper; mounted on pilaster in alignment with door latch.

5. Coat hook with rubber bumper; one per compartment, mounted on door.

6. Provide door pull for outswinging doors.

2.5 FINISHING

A. Powder Coated Steel Compartments: Clean, degrease, and neutralize. Follow immediately with a phosphatizing treatment, prime coat and two finish coats powder coat enamel.

1. Color: As selected by Contracting Officer from manufacturer's full range of available standards.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Verify existing conditions before starting work.

B. Verify that field measurements are as indicated on Drawings.

C. Verify correct spacing of and between plumbing fixtures.

D. Verify correct location of built-in framing, anchorage, and bracing.

3.2 INSTALLATION

A. Install partitions secure, rigid, plumb, and level in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

B. Maintain 3/8 to 1/2 inch space between wall and panels and between wall and end pilasters.

C. Attach panel brackets securely to walls using anchor devices. Adjust locations of brackets as required to eliminate conflict with wall tile edges and othet transitions between dissimilar wall finish materials.

E. Installer's Qualification Statement.

F. Operation and Maintenance Data: Provide manufacturer's operation and maintenance instructions.

1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Installer Qualifications: Company specializing in performing work of the type specified and with at least three years of documented experience.

1.5 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Deliver projection screens to project site in manufacturer's original unopened packaging, and inspect for damage and proper size before accepting delivery.

B. Store in a protected, clean, dry area with temperature maintained above 50 degrees F, and stack in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations.

C. Acclimate screens to building temperatures for 24 hours prior to installation, in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations.

1.6 FIELD CONDITIONS

A. Maintain interior of building between 60 degrees F and 80 degrees F during and after installation of projection screens.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 MANUFACTURERS

2.2 FRONT PROJECTION SCREENS

A. Front Projection Screens: Factory assembled unless otherwise indicated.

1. Dimensions: As indicated on Drawings.

B. Matte Light Diffusing Fabric: Light diffusing screen fabric; washable, flame retardant and mildew resistant.

1. Material: High contrast gray vinyl without backing, with nominal gain of 0.8 over viewing angle not less than 70 degrees from axis, horizontally and vertically.

2. Seams: No seams permitted in fabric up to 96 inch high by 72 inch wide.

C. Masking Borders: Black, on four sides.

D. Concealed-in-Ceiling Screen Cases: Aluminum, with integral roller brackets.

1. Door Slat: Self trim; self-closing and -opening.

2. Case Finish: Baked enamel.

3. Case Color: White.

4. End Caps: Aluminum; finished to match case.

5. Electrically-Operated Screens: 1-1/2 inch aluminum door roller.

E. Electrically-Operated Screens:

1. Roller: Steel, 2 inch in diameter, with locking device.

2. Vertical Tensioning: Screen fabric weighted at bottom with steel bar and plastic end caps.

3. Horizontal Tensioning: Not required.

F. Provide mounting hardware, brackets, supports, fasteners, and other mounting accessories required for a complete installation, in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations for specified substrates and mountings.

2.3 ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS

A. Electrical Components: Listed and classified by UL as suitable for the purpose specified and indicated.

B. Motors: Direct drive, 110 V, 60 Hz.

1. Screen Motor: Mounted inside roller; three wire with ground; quick reverse type and lifetime lubricated; equipped with thermal overload cut-off, internal junction box, electric brake, and pre-set accessible limit switches.

a. Electrical Characteristics: 1.2 amps.

b. Motor mounted on sound absorber.

2. Door Motor: Mounted inside roller; three wire with ground; quick reverse type;

equipped with thermal overload cut-off.

C. Controls: Three (3) position control switch with plate.

1. Provide two control stations to screen, with internal override to prevent more than one signal reaching the screen.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Verify that substrate is finished and ready to accept screen installation.

B. If substrate preparation is the responsibility of another installer, notify Contracting

Officer of unsatisfactory preparation before proceeding.

C. Verify that openings for recessed screens are correctly sized.

D. Verify type and location of electrical connections.

E. Do not install projection screens until climate control systems are in place and interior painting and other finishes are completed.
