About this file

This file is a course scope document for Geoscience Honors (Course 30804) developed by Nevada's State Department of Education in conjunction with a related textbook adoption contract opportunity. The course is a one-year honors-level high school science curriculum designed to integrate science and engineering practices with Earth and space science concepts. The curriculum covers six primary topic areas: Space Systems, History of Earth, Earth's Systems, Weather and Climate, Human Sustainability, and Engineering Design. The course fulfills one of the science credits required for high school graduation, qualifies as a laboratory science for college entrance, and may count toward College and Career Ready Flex Credit requirements for the Standard Diploma. Laboratory experiences and demonstrations using proper safety techniques are essential instructional components, as is the integration of technology and diversity awareness throughout the course.

The document outlines ten specific course goals aligned with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), focusing on stellar processes, orbital mechanics, Earth's internal processes, geological and biological evidence, Earth systems modeling, water's role in Earth's systems, weather and climate analysis with emphasis on climate change, natural resource availability and hazards, resource management, and technological solutions to mitigate human impacts on natural systems. The course scope was initially approved in November 2012, revised in November 2014, and most recently revised in April 2021. No pricing, funding, incumbent, or contractual terms are specified in this course scope document, as it serves as the foundational curriculum reference for the related textbook adoption procurement opportunity.

GEOSCIENCE HONORS – 30804

Course Scope:

This one-year course is designed to integrate science and engineering practices, crosscutting concepts, and core ideas related to Earth and space science. This course is designated as honors level by the accelerated instructional pacing and depth of content. The topics covered in Geoscience Honors include Space Systems, History of Earth, Earth’s Systems, Weather and Climate, Human Sustainability, and Engineering Design. Demonstrations and lab experiences that employ proper safety techniques are essential to this course. Instructional practices incorporate integration of diversity awareness including appreciation of all cultures and their important contributions to society. The appropriate use of technology is an integral part of this course. This course fulfills one of the science credits required for high school graduation and qualifies as a laboratory science for college entrance. This course may count towards the College and Career Ready Flex Credit requirements for the Standard Diploma.

Course Goals:

1. To understand how evidence from stellar processes is used to reconstruct the history of the universe. [HS-ESS1-1, HS-ESS1-2, HS-ESS1-3]

2. To analyze the orbital motion of objects in the solar system and explain how orbital parameters can change over time. [HS-ESS1-4]

3. To make inferences regarding Earth’s internal processes through the analysis of surface features. [HS-ESS2-1]

4. To examine how geological and biological evidence are used to reconstruct events in Earth’s history. [HS-ESS1-5, HS-ESS1-6, HS-ESS2-7]

5. To develop and analyze models which explain the interdependency of Earth’s systems. [HS-ESS2-2, HS-ESS2-3, HS-ESS2-6]

6. To investigate the essential role of water in Earth’s dynamic systems. [HS-ESS2-5]

7. To analyze evidence illustrating system interactions related to weather and climate, with an emphasis on the mechanisms and implications of climate change.

[HS-ESS2-4, HS-ESS3-5]

8. To construct an explanation describing how the availability of natural resources, the occurrence of natural hazards, and changes in climate affect human populations.

[HS-ESS3-1]

9. To create and evaluate evidence-based models designed to illustrate the dependence of societies on natural resource management.

[HS-ESS3-2, HS-ESS3-3, HS-ETS1-2, HS-ETS1-3]

10. To investigate technological solutions that mitigate the impacts of human activities on natural systems.

[HS-ESS3-4, HS-ESS3-6, HS-ETS1-1, HS-ETS1-2, HS-ETS1-3, HS-ETS1-4]

Approved November 2012, revised November 2014, revised April 2021.
