About this file
This is a course scope document and related textbook adoption contract opportunity for the State of Nevada, establishing curriculum standards for Geoscience and Honors Geoscience courses at the high school level. The document outlines a one-year course designed to integrate science and engineering practices with core concepts in Earth and space science, covering topics including Space Systems, History of Earth, Earth's Systems, Weather and Climate, Human Sustainability, and Engineering Design. The course fulfills one science credit required for high school graduation, qualifies as a laboratory science for college entrance, and may count toward College and Career Ready Flex Credit requirements for the Standard Diploma. The curriculum was approved in November 2012, revised in November 2014, and updated in April 2021, with course identification number CID-SCI-SG-3080 and SCED code 03208.
The course establishes ten primary learning goals aligned with Next Generation Science Standards, requiring students to understand stellar processes and universal history, analyze orbital mechanics, examine geological evidence and Earth's internal processes, evaluate interdependencies of Earth's systems, investigate water's role in dynamic systems, analyze weather and climate patterns with emphasis on climate change, construct explanations of natural resource availability and hazard impacts on human populations, create evidence-based models for resource management, and investigate technological solutions to mitigate human impacts on natural systems. The Honors-level designation is distinguished by accelerated instructional pacing and increased content depth. Essential to course delivery are demonstrations and laboratory experiences employing proper safety techniques, integration of diversity awareness and cultural contributions, and appropriate technology integration throughout instruction.

GEOSCIENCE – 3080
Course Scope:
This one-year course is designed to integrate science and engineering practices, crosscutting concepts, and core ideas related to Earth and space science. The topics covered in Geoscience include Space Systems, History of Earth, Earth’s Systems, Weather and Climate, Human Sustainability, and Engineering Design. Demonstrations and lab experiences that employ proper safety techniques are essential to this course. Instructional practices incorporate integration of diversity awareness including appreciation of all cultures and their important contributions to society. The appropriate use of technology is an integral part of this course. This course fulfills one of the science credits required for high school graduation and qualifies as a laboratory science for college entrance. This course may count towards the College and Career Ready Flex Credit requirements for the Standard Diploma.
Course Goals:
1. To understand how evidence from stellar processes is used to reconstruct the history of the universe. [HS-ESS1-1, HS-ESS1-2, HS-ESS1-3]
2. To analyze the orbital motion of objects in the solar system and explain how orbital parameters can change over time. [HS-ESS1-4]
3. To make inferences regarding Earth’s internal processes through the analysis of surface features. [HS-ESS2-1]
4. To examine how geological and biological evidence are used to reconstruct events in Earth’s history. [HS-ESS1-5, HS-ESS1-6, HS-ESS2-7]
5. To develop and analyze models which explain the interdependency of Earth’s systems. [HS-ESS2-2, HS-ESS2-3, HS-ESS2-6]
6. To investigate the essential role of water in Earth’s dynamic systems. [HS-ESS2-5]
7. To analyze evidence illustrating system interactions related to weather and climate, with an emphasis on the mechanisms and implications of climate change.
[HS-ESS2-4, HS-ESS3-5]
8. To construct an explanation describing how the availability of natural resources, the occurrence of natural hazards, and changes in climate affect human populations.
[HS-ESS3-1]
9. To create and evaluate evidence-based models designed to illustrate the dependence of societies on natural resource management.
[HS-ESS3-2, HS-ESS3-3, HS-ETS1-2, HS-ETS1-3]
10. To investigate technological solutions that mitigate the impacts of human activities on natural systems.
[HS-ESS3-4, HS-ESS3-6, HS-ETS1-1, HS-ETS1-2, HS-ETS1-3, HS-ETS1-4]
Approved November 2012, revised November 2014, revised April 2021.
