About this file

This is a technical specification document issued by The University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin) Campus Operations for cast bronze dedicatory building plaques used in campus renovation and new construction projects. The specification outlines the design and construction standards required for a cast bronze (or cast aluminum alternative) plaque measuring 36 inches wide by 24 inches high, complete with raised border design, "Seneca" style lettering in satin/brushed finish, and leatherette background finish in oxidized-dark bronze or black. The plaque shall include the building name, year of Notice to Proceed, names of Board of Regents at issuance, and names of the architect and prime contractor. For bidding purposes, the specification assumes approximately 60 large characters and 375 small characters, with exact wording to be provided by the Owner at a later date. The plaque must be manufactured by The Southwell Company of San Antonio, Texas, or an approved equivalent, cast from virgin ingots of either 85-5-5-5 Standard U.S. bronze alloy or aluminum alloy 356.1.

The specification requires that four copies of full-size shop drawings be submitted directly to the Office of Facilities Planning and Construction (OFPC) for approval prior to casting, with two approved copies returned to the contractor. The plaque shall be delivered crated for protection, stored indoors, and installed plumb, level, and square with concealed fastening devices in an enclosed, dry building. The casting must be free of pits and gas holes with hand-tooled letters, chemically cleaned, etched, treated with Alodine, and sprayed with two coats of clear acrylic lacquer. This specification is part of the UT Austin Design and Construction Standards and applies to the Red & Charline McCombs Softball Stadium Renovation project, which has a Construction Cost Limitation of $9,400,000.00.
