FY2024 Manufacturing USA Institute - AI for Resilient Manufacturing
The Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is seeking applications to establish and operate a Manufacturing USA institute focused on using artificial intelligence (AI) to strengthen the resilience of U.S. manufacturers. The institute is expected to conduct applied R&D projects and cultivate workforce development programs to accelerate the deployment of AI technologies that address industry-wide needs for innovation and increased manufacturing resilience. Eligibility is open to various organizations including academic institutions, non-profits, and state/local governments. The application process consists of a concept paper due September 30, 2024, followed by a full proposal invitation-only due around January 23, 2025. NIST anticipates funding up to $70 million over 5 years for a single competitive award under this opportunity, with a required minimum 50% non-federal cost share. The selected institute is expected to leverage the existing Manufacturing USA network and the NIST-sponsored U.S. AI Safety Institute consortium, with work primarily performed at recipient facilities with potential for collaboration at NIST laboratories.
