About this opportunity

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is soliciting applications for grants and cooperative agreements to support research and partnership activities in measurement science and engineering, with a firm application deadline of 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on September 15, 2026.

Eligible applicants include institutions of higher education, non-profit organizations, for-profit organizations, state and local governments, Indian tribes, hospitals, foreign public entities, and foreign governments. Individuals and unincorporated sole proprietors are not eligible. NIST encourages applications from minority-serving institutions of higher education and community colleges. No cost sharing is required.

The program funds activities that develop, expand, strengthen, or sustain NIST partnership programs and collaborative research across 13 different research grant programs in areas including metrology, standards, nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, advanced communications, advanced manufacturing, promotion of U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness, neutron research, and coordination of the U.S. standards system with government and private sector organizations. Award amounts range from $5,000 to $12,000,000, with project performance periods of up to five years.

Applications are funded under four primary Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) numbers: 11.042 (CHIPS Research and Development), 11.609 (Measurement and Engineering Research and Standards), 11.619 (Interdisciplinary Research Infrastructure), and 11.620 (Science, Technology, Business and/or Education Outreach). Applications must be submitted electronically through Grants.gov. The review process involves at least three objective reviewers per application, with final selections made by NIST program officials considering technical merit, institutional capability, and alignment with program objectives. Amendment 1, issued June 9, 2026, changed the deadline from rolling basis to the firm September 15, 2026 deadline.
