About this opportunity

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is seeking applications from eligible applicants to establish a collaborative research facility in Hawai'i that supports multi-disciplinary plastic pollution research focused on the Hawaiian Islands. The program aims to leverage NIST's expertise in chemical sciences and measurement research to advance plastic pollution quantification, characterization, fate, and recycling. Eligible applicants include accredited institutions of higher education, non-profit organizations, for-profit organizations, and state/local governments with facilities on O'ahu. Applications will be evaluated based on the applicant's ability to host and interact with at least three NIST scientists, provide appropriate facilities and support for the research, and establish a long-term partnership. Applications are due by June 17, 2024.

NIST anticipates funding one award for up to $250,000 per year for up to five years, with the possibility of additional multi-year funding after the initial period. The program is associated with CFDA 11.619: Arrangements for Interdisciplinary Research Infrastructure, which aims to establish and strengthen new and/or existing centers, consortia, or other arrangements for interdisciplinary research infrastructure.

Synopsis

The NIST-Hawai'i Partnership in Plastic Pollution Research is seeking applications from eligible applicants to establish an institutional award, as described in the Department of Commerce Grants and Cooperative Agreements Manual, Chapter 6.A.2 (20 April 2021), for activities to partner on the nation's priority plastic pollution research with efforts focusing on the Hawaiian Island region. Eligible applicants should describe how they can host and interact with at least three NIST scientists with office, laboratory and other appropriate facilities to perform multi-disciplinary plastic pollution research with the intent to establish a long-term partnership between NIST and the recipient, as discussed in Section I.1. The proposal should also include a description of administrative, research and outreach/educational support that would be offered by the applicant in the partnership to achieve world-class research in the field of plastic pollution.
